Does FlightGear work on Windows 11, and how can I fix it?

Yes. FlightGear works on Windows 11 with its 64-bit Windows build. Most failures are caused by an outdated graphics driver, unsupported OpenGL hardware, a blocked installer, damaged user settings or an old add-on. Install a clean build, update the GPU driver, reset settings and test a default aircraft first.

Does FlightGear run natively on Windows 11?

FlightGear runs as a normal Windows 11 desktop application and should not require Windows compatibility mode. The main requirement is a graphics card and driver with suitable OpenGL support; the Windows version alone does not guarantee that the hardware can render the simulator correctly.

Before troubleshooting, compare your PC with FlightGear's RAM, GPU, OpenGL and storage requirements. If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, install the proper Windows 11 driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer.

This guidance assumes an Intel or AMD x64 PC. Windows 11 on Arm can emulate x64 applications, but FlightGear still depends on the device's OpenGL driver, so compatibility and performance are less predictable.

What is the cleanest way to install FlightGear on Windows 11?

A clean installation using matching programme and data files prevents most Windows 11 setup problems.

  1. Remove forced compatibility settings. Right-click the FlightGear shortcut or executable, open its compatibility properties and make sure old Windows modes are not enabled.
  2. Get a complete Windows build. Use our Windows FlightGear installer and installation details rather than assembling programme files from different releases.
  3. Install into a fresh folder when diagnosing faults. Do not copy an older FGData directory over the new installation. The executable and its data must belong to the same FlightGear release.
  4. Start with stock content. Select a default aircraft and an included airport, with custom aircraft, scenery paths and plug-ins disabled.
  5. Restore add-ons individually. Once the stock simulator works, add each aircraft or scenery package back one at a time. Older aircraft can contain scripts or systems that no longer work with a newer FlightGear build.

A Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warning does not automatically mean FlightGear is incompatible. Verify that the installer is the file you deliberately downloaded from a trusted page, then use the warning's additional information option only if satisfied. Do not disable Windows Security system-wide. Run the installer with elevated rights if Windows requests them, but run FlightGear itself as a standard user.

How do I fix launch failures, crashes and black screens?

  1. Reset the user profile. Close FlightGear, press Win+R and open %APPDATA%\flightgear.org. Rename that folder to flightgear.org-backup. FlightGear will create fresh settings on its next start, while the renamed folder preserves the old files.
  2. Remove custom paths. Clear additional aircraft, scenery and data locations from the launcher. A frequent mistake is directing a new executable to an old data tree.
  3. Test the default aircraft. If stock content works, Windows 11 is not the underlying problem. Reintroduce add-ons until the faulty package is identified.
  4. Check the active GPU. On a dual-GPU laptop, open Windows Settings, go to System, Display and Graphics, add the FlightGear executable and select the high-performance GPU. Restart FlightGear afterwards.
  5. Repair security permissions. If Controlled Folder Access or antivirus software blocked a file, allow the verified FlightGear application or reinstall it into a location where your account has normal write access. Avoid running every flight as administrator.

Black window versus black cockpit

A completely black 3D window usually points to the graphics driver or OpenGL support, while a black or missing cockpit panel can be specific to the selected aircraft. Switch to a default aircraft and an external view; if the outside scene renders, investigate the aircraft rather than Windows.

Why are performance, controls or scenery wrong?

Poor frame rate, dead controls and missing terrain are normally configuration issues rather than evidence that FlightGear is incompatible with Windows 11.

Low frame rate or stutter

Make sure FlightGear is using the dedicated GPU and that the laptop is not in a battery-saving mode. Reduce screen resolution, shadows, cloud detail, anti-aliasing and scenery detail separately so that you can identify the expensive setting. Complex add-on aircraft can also run much slower than stock aircraft.

Joystick, throttle or rudder problems

Open the Windows controller panel by running joy.cpl, confirm that every axis moves correctly, and calibrate the device if necessary. Connect controllers before launching FlightGear, then remove duplicate axis assignments inside the simulator. Two devices assigned to yaw or throttle commonly produce twitching or controls that appear unresponsive.

Sound, scenery and network data

For missing sound, select the intended Windows output device before starting FlightGear and check its entry in the Windows volume mixer. Restart the simulator after changing audio hardware because an application can retain the device it opened at launch.

A scenery path should point to the root folder containing directories such as Terrain and Objects, not to one of those subdirectories. TerraSync also needs a writable cache location and sufficient free storage. If online scenery or multiplayer alone fails, permit the specific FlightGear executable through the appropriate Windows Firewall profile rather than disabling the firewall.

Once a default aircraft and stock scenery load under a fresh profile, the Windows 11 installation is working. Any problem that returns after restoring a custom aircraft, scenery directory or old preference file belongs to that item, not to operating-system compatibility.
