To enable HDR in Train Sim World, turn on and calibrate HDR in Windows, Xbox or PlayStation before starting the game, then select HDR in the game’s Display or Graphics menu if that option exists. Availability varies by release; where native HDR is unsupported, Windows or Xbox Auto HDR may provide a converted HDR image.
How do I turn on HDR in Train Sim World?
Configure the display and platform first, because Train Sim World cannot enable HDR if the operating system or console is sending an SDR signal.
- Check the entire display chain. Your monitor or television, HDMI or DisplayPort connection, graphics card and chosen input must all support HDR. Some televisions require an enhanced, deep-colour or similar high-bandwidth mode for each HDMI input.
- Enable platform HDR before launching the simulator.
- In Windows 11, open
Settings > System > Display > HDR, select the correct monitor and turn onUse HDR. Windows 10 places the equivalent controls under its display or Windows HD Colour settings. - On Xbox, open
Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modesand enableAllow HDR10. - On PlayStation 5, use
Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set HDR toOn When Supported, then runAdjust HDR. PlayStation 4 has equivalent HDR controls in its sound and screen settings.

- Run the platform’s HDR calibration. Set the darkest and brightest patterns as instructed. Do this with the television or monitor in the picture mode you use for Train Sim World, normally Game mode.
- Restart Train Sim World. Look under Display or Graphics for HDR, peak brightness or paper-white controls. The wording and availability differ between Train Sim World generations and platforms; supported console editions may engage HDR automatically instead of presenting a switch.
- Test without over-adjusting. Start with the game’s brightness or gamma control at its default. Check that cloud detail, headlights and illuminated signs are not clipped while instruments and shadowed cab controls remain visible.
Does every Train Sim World version support native HDR?

Native HDR means the simulator renders and tone-maps an HDR image. Auto HDR converts an SDR game automatically and may look better on some displays, but it is not the same feature. Windows 11 and compatible Xbox consoles can offer Auto HDR for recognised games; availability is not guaranteed.
A television showing an HDR badge only confirms that it is receiving an HDR-format signal. It does not prove that Train Sim World is rendering native HDR, particularly when Windows HDR, Xbox Auto HDR or PlayStation’s forced HDR output is active. Using PlayStation’s On When Supported option makes native support easier to identify than Always On.
If the PC edition has no HDR control, avoid copying unverified Unreal Engine HDR commands into configuration files. Such changes can produce incorrect colour mapping, be reset by an update or leave menus and screenshots looking wrong.
What HDR brightness settings should I use?
The correct HDR setting is the one matched to your display’s calibrated peak brightness, not the highest value available. Use a documented peak-luminance figure for your display if Train Sim World provides a numerical control; otherwise use the supplied clipping pattern and retain the default midpoint as your starting point.
- Set peak brightness so the brightest calibration detail is just visible rather than completely clipped.
- Use paper white, where offered, to control ordinary scene and interface brightness. Raising it excessively makes the entire image glaring and reduces the contrast available for highlights.
- Leave the television’s black level or video range on Auto unless you have deliberately configured matching full or limited ranges at both ends.
- Disable ambient-light or energy-saving dimming while calibrating because it changes brightness during the process.
Train Sim World’s exposure adjustment can darken a cab when the camera includes a bright sky and brighten it again when looking down at the controls. That behaviour is not necessarily an HDR fault, so do not calibrate the whole display around one difficult cab or weather condition.
Why does Train Sim World HDR look washed out or too dark?
Washed-out HDR usually comes from an SDR/HDR mismatch, forced conversion or conflicting calibration rather than the route itself.

Does HDR reduce Train Sim World performance?
HDR alone normally has a smaller performance effect than resolution, shadows, view distance or anti-aliasing, but enabling it may also switch the system into a higher-resolution display mode. PC users should compare their hardware against the recommended Train Sim World PC requirements before combining HDR with 4K output and demanding graphics settings.
