How do you use Guard Mode in Train Sim World?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to start Guard Mode in Train Sim World, operate doors, signal the driver, check tickets, and fix missing or stuck guard objectives.

In Train Sim World, start a timetable service that supports Guard Mode, choose the guard role when offered, then follow the HUD objectives. At each stop, release the correct-side doors, supervise boarding, close and lock them, give the driver the departure signal, and check marked passengers' tickets between stations when instructed.

How do I start Guard Mode?

Start Guard Mode from a compatible timetable service; it cannot be added to an arbitrary train or service.

  1. Open Timetable mode. Select an installed route and train, then inspect its available services. Our explanation of how scheduled services and start times are organised covers the timetable selection process.
  2. Choose a supported service. Select the guard role or Guard Mode option instead of the normal driving role when it is offered.
  3. Activate the role if prompted. Some implementations load directly into Guard Mode; others display an activation objective once you are aboard. Use the action named on screen rather than a general door command.
  4. Find the highlighted guard position. Move to the local door or guard panel indicated by the objective and wait for the station task.

Keyboard and controller inputs vary with platform, control preset and custom bindings. If the activation or door command does nothing, check the action assigned in the controls menu; our Train Sim World control-binding reference explains how to identify and remap commands.

What do you do as the guard at each station?

At a station, the guard's essential task is to release the correct doors, supervise the stop and dispatch the train safely.

  1. Check the platform side. Use the objective, platform position and door controls to confirm which side should open. Do not guess from the previous station.
  2. Release the doors. Operate the marked guard panel or local controls only after the train has stopped. The exact switch and key sequence depends on the rolling stock.
  3. Supervise boarding. Wait for the loading objective or countdown to finish. On services with ticket duties, inspect the marked passengers between station stops rather than delaying dispatch.
  4. Close and secure the doors. Some trains close every door together; others require the local guard door to be closed last. Confirm that no open-door indication remains.
  5. Give the right-away signal. Use the buzzer, bell or dispatch control requested by the objective. The AI driver will depart when the doors are secured, the scheduled time has arrived and the signal permits movement.

A common mistake is using the cab's global door command while the objective expects interaction with a guard panel. Follow the highlighted control because the procedure is authored for that particular train.

Do you drive the train in Guard Mode?

No; the AI driver normally handles traction, braking and signals while you perform passenger and dispatch duties.

You can move through the passenger accommodation while the train is running, but return to the required guard position before the next stop. Ticket checking is only available where the service supplies marked passengers and the corresponding objective.

Can you use Guard Mode on every route?

No; Guard Mode compatibility is authored for particular combinations of route, train and timetable service.

  • A route may contain many services but support guard duties on only a subset of them.
  • Using the same train on another route or timetable layer does not guarantee that Guard Mode will appear.
  • Scenarios and free-roam sessions may not expose the role even when a scheduled service does.
  • North American content may call the comparable passenger role Conductor Mode, with different procedures and controls.
  • If the option should be present, confirm that the required route and rolling-stock content are fully installed and that the game is updated.

Why won't the train depart after I close the doors?

A train usually remains at the platform because a door is still open, the dispatch signal has not been sent, or the AI driver is waiting for time or signalling.

  1. Check every door indication. The local guard door is the usual culprit, especially on stock where it closes separately from the passenger doors.
  2. Finish the current objective. Closing doors is not always the final action; the service may still require a buzzer or right-away command.
  3. Check the panel state. Where modelled, return the guard key or panel controls to the position requested by the prompt.
  4. Wait for the booked departure time. An early dispatch signal does not necessarily make the AI driver leave immediately.
  5. Look at the signal ahead. A red signal can hold the train after every guard task has been completed correctly.

If you opened the wrong side, close those doors first and resume the displayed task. When the objective does not recover, reload the latest checkpoint or restart the service rather than repeatedly operating both sets of doors.

Can Guard Mode be used without the HUD?

Yes, but learn each train's guard-panel sequence with the HUD enabled before attempting an unassisted run.

If the task marker or control prompt has disappeared unexpectedly, restore the relevant assistance options using our guide to showing objective markers and control hints. Once you know the stopping pattern, door side and dispatch controls, those aids can be reduced again.
