How do I find an airport and runway when flying VFR?

To find an airport and runway when flying VFR, maintain a position fix with chart landmarks, heading, time and GPS if available. Predict where the field should appear, confirm it from runway layout and surrounding features, then identify the landing runway using its direction, wind, traffic and ATC information.
For our Aviation & Real-World Flying readers, the difficult part is often not reaching the airport symbol but recognising the correct patch of ground early enough to make a safe arrival. The same practical sequence works in a civilian flight simulator: predict, sight, confirm and then join.
Where is the VFR airport, and is VFR an airport code?
The phrase VFR airport does not identify one particular airport: VFR means visual flight rules, so there is no single VFR airport location.
VFR is not an ICAO aerodrome identifier, because ICAO identifiers contain four letters. Three-letter entries are commonly IATA identifiers, while individual authorities and simulator databases may use other formats. If a program displays VFR in an airport-code field, check the database, country and full airport name rather than assuming the letters identify a universal location. An airport described as VFR-only normally requires operations in visual conditions or lacks an available instrument procedure, depending on the local rules and published information. Controlled airports can also accept VFR flights; VFR does not mean uncontrolled or free from ATC requirements.
Build an airport recognition picture before take-off
Before departure, establish what the destination should look like from your planned arrival direction rather than waiting to recognise it by chance.
- Confirm the identity. Check the full airport name, identifier and locality. A mistake we see often is selecting a similarly named airport in the wrong region.
- Study the runway layout. Note the number of runways, their approximate orientation, length and surface. Grass, dirt and gravel strips can merge into surrounding fields.
- Select prominent landmarks. Choose two or three features such as a coastline, reservoir, motorway, railway, town boundary or distinctive terrain shape.
- Check arrival details. Record the airport elevation, circuit altitude and direction, obstacles, airspace, frequencies and any special local procedure.
- Review operating information. Check the forecast wind, runway availability, closures and applicable notices. Real flights require approved and up-to-date information; simulator scenery and navigation data may represent different dates.

How do you spot an airport from the air?
Spot an airport by predicting a small search area and matching several independent features instead of scanning the entire horizon for runway pavement.
- Establish a positive position. Fix your location using a charted landmark, navigation aid or GPS. An airport-shaped object is not a reliable position fix when you are already uncertain of your location.
- Calculate direction, distance and time. Use a wind-corrected heading and ground speed to estimate where the airport should appear and when it should become visible.
- Predict the sight picture. Determine the airport's position relative to the aircraft and the expected angle of the runways. A runway seen end-on can look like a short grey mark; one crossing your track presents a much longer shape.
- Look for the whole aerodrome. Hangars, aprons, taxiways, parked aircraft and cleared boundaries may stand out before the runway. Use repeated short scans around the predicted position rather than staring at one point.
- Confirm at least two features. Match the runway layout and another feature such as a town, road, shoreline or terrain profile. This helps prevent an accidental join at a nearby private strip, military field or disused aerodrome.
In a simulator, a moving map is useful as a cross-check after making the visual estimate. Hide airport labels when practising pilotage, then restore them if you need to confirm why the field was missed. Do not treat simulator mapping or scenery as approved navigation data for a real flight.
How do you identify the correct runway?
Identify a runway by matching its magnetic orientation and published designation, then use wind, traffic, procedures and ATC instructions to decide which landing direction is appropriate.
Runway 27 points approximately towards 270 degrees magnetic when approached for landing; its opposite end will normally be 09. The designation omits the final zero and uses a rounded heading, so the physical centreline may differ by several degrees. Parallel runways add L, C or R as viewed from the approach end.
The painted numbers may be unreadable until relatively close. Compare the runway angle with your heading and the charted layout first. Grass, water and small private runways may have no conventional markings at all.
- At a controlled airport: obtain the available weather and airport information, follow the assigned runway and do not land until the required clearance has been received.
- At a non-towered airport: monitor the published traffic frequency, observe traffic and the windsock, obtain weather information where available and follow the published circuit procedure.
- If the indications conflict: do not assume the runway with the strongest headwind component must be in use. Traffic flow, runway length, surface condition, obstacles, closures and local procedures can change the choice.

Is GPS enough to find the airport?
No; GPS can guide you to stored airport coordinates, but it does not by itself confirm the field or place the aircraft on a safe runway approach.
A direct-to course commonly leads towards the airport reference point near the centre of the aerodrome rather than a runway threshold. Following it to zero distance can take you overhead the field, across an active runway or through circuit traffic. Use GPS to support visual identification and chart work, not to replace them.
Before accepting an airport waypoint, verify its identifier, region, distance and runway layout. Simulator navigation data and scenery can also disagree after a real runway is renumbered. When that happens, compare the physical runway orientation and layout rather than trusting only the painted number or map label.
How can I find the airport if there is no compass?
If there is no separate magnetic compass visible, use an installed heading display and known landmarks; if no serviceable heading source exists at all, the correct response differs sharply between a simulator and a real aircraft.
In a glass cockpit, heading may appear on an HSI or heading tape instead of a traditional compass. In other aircraft, the magnetic compass may sit above the windscreen or outside the default camera view. Pan around the cockpit and distinguish heading, where the nose points, from GPS track, the path over the ground; crosswind can make them differ substantially.
In a simulator, a moving map, HUD or external view can help recover orientation, though using them changes the realism of the exercise. You can also return to a known road, coastline or other unmistakable feature and approach the airport again from a predictable direction.
In real flight, a missing or failed compass may affect the aircraft's airworthiness and the legality of the flight. If it fails airborne, maintain safe control, use the applicable checklist and other installed equipment, and request assistance or divert as conditions require. Runway numbers provide approximate magnetic orientation after the field is found; they are not a substitute for a usable navigation reference.
What should you do if the airport is hard to see?
If the airport does not appear where expected, maintain a safe and legal altitude in visual conditions, re-establish your position and never descend solely to improve the view.

If positive identification cannot be made in real flight, continue towards a known fix, request assistance where available or divert while fuel, weather and daylight remain adequate. Uncertainty is not a reason to press lower towards unfamiliar terrain.
What should you do after locating the runway?
Do not join the circuit until the airport, intended runway, airspace and traffic situation are positively identified.
At a controlled field, contact ATC and comply with the clearance. At a non-towered field, listen carefully, make the appropriate broadcasts and join according to the published local procedure; radio silence never proves that the circuit is empty. VFR flight does not remove the need for controlled-airspace permission or a landing clearance where one is required.
Leave enough room and height to establish a normal, stabilised arrival rather than diving directly towards the threshold.
