To find an airport and runway when flying VFR, maintain a position fix with chart landmarks, heading, time and, if available, GPS. Approach from a known feature, confirm the airport by runway layout and nearby terrain, then identify the runway from its number, wind information and traffic—not appearance alone.

Prepare an airport recognition picture before take-off
Before departure, learn what the destination should look like from your planned arrival direction. Use approved, current information for real flying; simulator charts and maps may contain older runway or scenery data.
- Confirm the airport's full name, identifier and locality so that a similarly named field is not selected by mistake.
- Note the runway numbers, orientation, length, surface and overall layout. Grass and gravel strips can be much harder to see than paved runways.
- Choose two or three surrounding features such as a coastline, reservoir, motorway, railway, town edge or distinctive terrain.
- Check the airport elevation, circuit or traffic-pattern altitude, circuit direction, obstacles, airspace and relevant frequencies.
- Review wind information, published procedures, closures and notices affecting the flight.

How do you spot an airport from the air?
Spot an airport by predicting where it should appear, scanning that small area and matching several features rather than searching the whole horizon.
- Establish a positive position. Fix your position from a chart feature, navigation aid or GPS before looking for the airport. If you do not know where you are, an airport-shaped object is not a reliable fix.
- Calculate direction, distance and arrival time. Use heading and groundspeed to decide when the field should become visible. Recheck wind drift if it does not appear at the expected time.
- Predict the sight picture. Work out the airport's clock position and runway angle. A runway viewed end-on may look like a short grey mark, while one crossing your track presents a longer and more obvious shape.
- Scan for the whole airport. Taxiways, aprons, hangars, parked aircraft and cleared ground may stand out before the runway. Do not stare at one point; use repeated short scans inside the predicted sector.
- Confirm at least two features. Match the runway layout plus a second feature such as a town, road, shoreline or terrain shape. This prevents the common mistake of joining the circuit at a nearby private strip or disused airfield.

How do you identify the correct runway?
Identify the runway by matching its magnetic orientation and published designation, then use wind, traffic and instructions to determine which end to approach.
A runway numbered 27 is approached on approximately 270 degrees magnetic; the opposite end will normally be 09. The number omits the final zero and is rounded, so the physical centreline can differ by several degrees. Parallel runways use L, C or R as viewed from the approach end, and those letters normally reverse at the opposite end.
At distance, the painted numbers may be unreadable. Compare the runway's angle with your heading and the charted layout instead. - At a controlled airport: obtain the weather and airport information, then follow the runway assignment and clearance from ATC.
- At an uncontrolled airport: listen on the published traffic frequency, check automated weather if available, observe the windsock or other indicators and follow the published circuit procedure.
- When information conflicts: do not assume the runway favoured by wind is automatically usable. Length, surface, obstacles, closures, local procedures and existing traffic also matter.
A mistake we see constantly in simulators is identifying the right piece of pavement but approaching the wrong end. Check the number from the landing direction, not from the side of the airport where your aircraft happens to be.
Is GPS enough to find the airport?
No; GPS can take you to the airport's stored reference point, but it does not positively identify the field or place the aircraft on a safe runway approach.
A direct-to course often leads towards the airport reference point near the centre of the aerodrome, not a runway threshold. Following it without an arrival plan can put the aircraft overhead the field, across an active runway or through circuit traffic. Use GPS to support chart reading and visual identification, not replace them.
Verify the identifier, region, distance and runway layout before accepting a waypoint. In simulators, scenery and navigation databases can also disagree after a real runway is renumbered; compare the runway's physical orientation rather than relying solely on the painted number or map label.
What should you do if the airport is hard to see?
If the airport is not where expected, maintain a safe and legal altitude, re-establish your position and resist descending merely to improve the view.

If positive identification cannot be made in real flight, continue to a known fix, request assistance where available or divert while fuel and daylight permit. Uncertainty is not a reason to press lower towards unfamiliar terrain.
Safe circuit entry after locating the runway
Do not enter the circuit until the airport, runway and traffic situation are positively identified. Seeing the runway does not authorise entry into controlled airspace or guarantee that the circuit is empty.
At a controlled field, contact ATC and comply with the clearance. At an uncontrolled field, listen carefully, make the appropriate broadcasts and join according to the published local procedure; radio silence never proves that no aircraft are present. Keep enough distance and height to form a normal, stabilised approach rather than diving directly at the threshold. If the runway identity, traffic or approach geometry becomes doubtful, go around and reassess.
