Find out when a VFR pilot should contact approach, tower or CTAF before arrival, with Class B/C/D rules, ATIS timing and radio-call examples.
A VFR pilot should contact the destination’s approach or tower early enough to establish two-way communication before entering airspace that requires it; Class B requires an explicit clearance. At a non-towered airport, monitor CTAF and begin position reports about 10 NM out. With flight following, stay with ATC until instructed or request a frequency change.
In Aviation & Real-World Flying, there is no universal distance that suits every arrival. The airspace class, published procedures, aircraft speed and whether ATC is already providing a service determine when and whom you call. The guidance below uses the US Class B/C/D and CTAF system; other countries may specify different services and reporting points.
Which frequency should a VFR pilot contact?
Use the arrival frequency published for the airport and airspace, not simply the first tower frequency you find.

For US Class C and D airspace, two-way communication is established when the controller responds using your aircraft identification. If ATC says, “Aircraft calling, stand by,” without your callsign, remain outside. A response such as “N123AB, stand by” establishes communication, but it still is not a Class B clearance.
Outside the US, the first service may be called Approach, Radar, Tower, Information, AFIS or Radio. Follow the aeronautical chart and published airport instructions, especially where a radio mandatory zone or designated reporting point applies.
What should the first VFR arrival call include?
A useful initial call identifies the station, aircraft, position, altitude and landing intention without making the controller extract each detail separately.
- Check the airport information. Confirm the airspace, tower hours, arrival frequency and any published reporting points.

- Make the arrival call. State the facility name, callsign, aircraft type, position, altitude, request and ATIS code when one has been issued.
A typical call is: Metro Tower, Cessna One Two Three Alpha Bravo, ten miles west, two thousand five hundred feet, full stop, information Golf. Use recognisable charted points or a distance and direction from the airport; a local landmark may mean nothing to the controller.
What if you already have VFR flight following?
Remain on the assigned ATC frequency until the controller hands you to Approach or Tower, or terminates the service and approves a frequency change.
A mistake we see constantly is switching to Tower or CTAF without telling the controller providing flight following. If the destination is getting close and no hand-off has occurred, report the airport in sight and request a frequency change. Do not cross a Class B, C or D boundary until the applicable communication or clearance requirement has been met.
Flight following does not itself clear a VFR aircraft into Class B. Likewise, filing a US VFR flight plan does not tell the destination tower that you are inbound or replace the required radio call.
What happens at a non-towered airport?
At a non-towered airport, you make advisory calls to other traffic rather than requesting a landing clearance from ATC.
In the US, begin monitoring and normally self-announce about 10 NM out, then report the relevant pattern entry, downwind, base, final and when clear of the runway. Receiving no reply does not mean the pattern is empty; some aircraft may have no radio or may be using the wrong frequency.

What if you cannot contact the destination?
Stay outside airspace requiring radio communication or clearance while you check the radio and decide whether to try again or divert.
- Verify the frequency, tower operating hours and whether the number is in the active rather than standby window.
- Check the selected COM radio, audio-panel source, volume, squelch, headset connection and push-to-talk switch.
- Listen for your callsign and avoid repeated transmissions that block the frequency.
- If receiving flight following, return to or remain with the previous controller and report the problem.
A silent CTAF does not prohibit an otherwise legal VFR arrival at many non-towered airports, but continue making blind position reports and maintain an especially careful visual lookout. If communications fail after entering tower-controlled airspace, follow the applicable lost-communications procedure, watch for light signals and use transponder code 7600 when appropriate; none of those actions creates a Class B clearance by itself.
