Learn how to find the nearest airport on a Garmin GPS, select Direct-To on G1000, GNS and GTN units, and avoid unsuitable-airport traps.
On most Garmin aviation GPS units, open the NRST (Nearest) airport page, highlight an airport, and review its bearing, distance and runway data. To use it, press D→, confirm the identifier, then press ENT. In real-world aviation, check that the airport is suitable before turning towards it.
How do I open Garmin's nearest airport page?
The control path depends on the Garmin family, but the nearest list is calculated from the aircraft's GPS position rather than its active flight plan.

How do I select and fly to the nearest airport?
Use the nearest list to inspect the airport first, then activate Direct-To only after confirming that you have selected the correct identifier.
- Confirm a valid GPS position. The unit must know the aircraft's position before it can calculate nearby airports.
- Open Nearest Airports. Make sure the page category says Airport, not VOR, NDB, intersection or user waypoint.
- Compare the choices. Read the identifier, bearing and distance. Highlight the airport with the cursor, FMS knob or touchscreen.
- Check the airport details. Review runway length, surface, elevation, frequencies and available approaches where the unit provides them.
- Activate Direct-To. With the airport selected, press
D→, verify the identifier and accept the activation with ENT or the on-screen Activate command. - Verify the result. Confirm that the intended airport is the active waypoint and that the displayed course and distance are sensible. Ensure the CDI source is GPS if you intend to follow GPS guidance.
Activating Direct-To replaces or bypasses parts of the planned route on many installations. If you only want airport information, inspect the entry without activating it.
Is the nearest airport always the best airport?
No—the nearest airport is simply the closest one that meets the GPS unit's search criteria, and it may be unsuitable for your aircraft or conditions.
- Runway: Check usable length, width, surface and whether wind favours an available runway.
- Weather: Consider visibility, cloud base, crosswind and whether an instrument approach is required.
- Terrain and airspace: A short straight-line distance can conceal high ground, restricted airspace or an unsafe descent path.
- Operations: Check closures, operating restrictions, lighting, fuel and emergency services using up-to-date aeronautical information.
- Aircraft capability: A paved runway suitable for a light piston aircraft may still be too short for a faster or heavier aeroplane.
In an actual emergency, aircraft control comes first. The Garmin nearest-airport function is a rapid search tool, not a substitute for judgement, communication with air traffic control or an appropriate emergency checklist.
Why is a nearby airport missing from Garmin NRST?
A nearby airport can be absent because of search filters, an invalid GPS position or differences between the unit's navigation database and the airport data you expect.
- The nearest-airport settings may exclude short, unpaved or private runways.
- The receiver may still be acquiring a position or operating in demonstration mode.
- You may be viewing the nearest VOR, intersection or another waypoint category instead of airports.
- An expired or mismatched navigation database may contain an old identifier or omit a newer airport.
- In a flight simulator, add-on scenery can display an airport visually without adding it to the Garmin unit's navigation database.

Does Direct-To line up the aircraft with a runway?
No—Direct-To normally guides the aircraft towards the airport reference waypoint, not a runway threshold or final approach course.
For landing, select and activate the appropriate instrument approach through the procedure controls, or join the visual traffic pattern using the runway, wind and circuit information. Do not follow the magenta line to the airport centre and expect it to provide runway alignment or descent guidance.
