How do I fix a cockpit that is too dark in MSFS 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

MSFS 2024 cockpit too dark? Fix panel dimmers, electrical power, HDR calibration, eye adaptation and crushed display black levels.

To fix a cockpit that is too dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, first raise the aircraft’s panel, instrument and display dimmers. If the whole view is dark, recalibrate HDR or disable it for a test, verify the display’s black-level setting, and reset graphics settings. Black screens usually indicate missing electrical power, not low exposure.

What is causing the dark cockpit?

The affected area tells you where to look: aircraft lighting, electrical power, automatic exposure or the display’s HDR configuration.

How do I brighten the cockpit in MSFS 2024?

Work through the controls before changing global graphics settings, because most isolated dark-cockpit cases come from an unpowered system or a dimmer left near zero.

  1. Test in daylight with a default aircraft. Use clear weather and park with the engine running. If that cockpit looks normal, the simulator’s display settings are probably not the cause.
  2. Confirm electrical power. A battery alone does not energise every aircraft’s avionics and lighting buses. Depending on the aircraft, connect external power, start the APU or engines, switch on the generators and enable the avionics master. If only the displays remain black, follow our checks for restoring power to blank MSFS avionics screens.
  3. Raise every relevant dimmer. Look for controls labelled instrument, panel, integral, pedestal, glareshield, flood or dome. Glass-cockpit displays often have separate brightness controls on their bezels or control panels. Our guide to cockpit instrument and display brightness covers this distinction in more detail.
  4. Use the right light for the conditions. Integral and panel lighting makes lettering and gauges readable without flooding the cabin. Flood or dome lights illuminate surfaces but can spoil night vision and make windscreens reflective, so they are not a good substitute for display brightness.
  5. Check the camera framing. If the panel darkens mainly when the windscreen contains bright sky or sunlit cloud, tilt the view down or use a closer instrument preset. This gives MSFS 2024’s exposure system less bright exterior scenery to balance against the shadowed cockpit.
  6. Test HDR against SDR. Disable HDR temporarily at both the platform and simulator level. If shadow detail returns, the problem is calibration rather than aircraft lighting; use our MSFS 2024 HDR10 calibration procedure before turning it back on.

Why does the cockpit become dark when I look outside?

MSFS 2024 adjusts exposure to balance a sunlit exterior against a shaded flight deck, so some darkening near a bright windscreen is intentional.

The effect becomes excessive when HDR peak brightness, paper-white brightness or black levels are misconfigured. A close instrument camera usually improves readability because less sky enters the exposure calculation. Raising every cabin light during the day may brighten surfaces, but it also produces an unrealistic, washed-out panel.

Do not confuse exposure with instrument brightness. If the panel structure is visible but the PFD or MFD is almost black, use that display’s dedicated brightness control and check its electrical bus.

Which HDR and display settings should I check?

Correct HDR and black-level matching should preserve detail in cockpit shadows without turning black into grey.

  • PC: Make sure Windows HDR and the simulator’s HDR10 setting are configured consistently. Run the platform’s HDR calibration, then set the simulator’s HDR values for the actual capabilities of the monitor rather than copying settings intended for another display.
  • Xbox and PlayStation 5: Complete the console HDR calibration and leave the console and television RGB or HDMI black-level options on compatible settings. AUTO is the safest diagnostic choice; forcing full range on one device and limited range on the other can crush cockpit shadows.
  • All displays: Temporarily disable dynamic contrast, black enhancement, ambient-light adjustment and aggressive energy-saving modes. These can darken shadow detail after MSFS has already applied tone mapping.
  • Non-HDR displays: Use SDR. Enabling HDR on a display with weak HDR performance can make the cockpit less readable rather than more realistic.

What if every aircraft is still too dark?

If default aircraft are dark in both daylight and night conditions, treat the problem as a global graphics or display fault rather than an aircraft-lighting problem.

Disable GPU-driver colour filters and third-party post-processing, restore the monitor or television picture controls to a neutral preset, and restart the simulator after changing HDR mode. If the image remains wrong, use the safe methods for resetting MSFS 2024 graphics settings.

When only one aircraft or livery stays dark, reset its panel state and test without that package. Aircraft-specific lighting logic, emissive textures and saved dimmer positions can all cause the problem; reinstalling the whole simulator will not correct an isolated add-on fault.
