Fix MSFS 2024 mouse controls not working on PC by resetting the mouse profile, ending freelook, removing input conflicts and checking add-ons.
To fix mouse controls not working in MSFS 2024 on PC, restore the Mouse device’s default control profile, click back into the simulator window, exit freelook, and disconnect competing controllers. If menus work but cockpit switches do not, test a default aircraft with Community add-ons removed before changing Windows or USB settings.
What does the mouse failure tell you?
The point at which mouse input stops working usually identifies the cause faster than changing random bindings.
| Symptom | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse fails on the Windows desktop too | Mouse, receiver, USB port or Windows problem | Reconnect it and test another port |
| Cursor works in menus but not the cockpit | Freelook, cockpit interaction mode, panel focus or aircraft add-on | Exit freelook and test a default aircraft |
| Mouse movement only pans the view | Mouse-look is active or incorrectly bound | Release the mouse-look button and inspect camera bindings |
| Only one aircraft is affected | Aircraft-specific profile, cockpit state or add-on fault | Load a default aircraft with its normal mouse profile |
| Input fails after connecting a gamepad or utility | Competing cursor or virtual-controller assignment | Disconnect other devices and restart the simulator |
How do I restore mouse controls in MSFS 2024?
A clean default Mouse profile is the safest starting point because it fixes missing assignments without erasing working joystick, throttle or keyboard profiles.
- Regain window focus. Press Escape to close open panels, use Alt+Tab to leave and return to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, then click once inside the simulator window. Close any overlay or pop-out panel that may be capturing input.
- Exit freelook. Release the right mouse button and operate the assigned freelook toggle once. A stuck or latched mouse-look command can make normal pointer movement appear broken.
- Select the Mouse device. Open the simulator’s Controls settings and choose Mouse rather than Keyboard, Gamepad or a combined peripheral. Note the active preset before making changes.
- Load the default preset. Switch to the standard Mouse profile, confirm the change and test it before editing individual commands. If the default works, create a separate custom profile rather than overwriting it. Our PC control-profile setup guide explains how to select the right device and find duplicate assignments.
- Remove competing inputs. Quit the simulator, disconnect gamepads and non-essential controllers, then relaunch using only the keyboard and mouse. Reconnect devices one at a time; also suspend any controller-mapping or virtual-device software while testing.
- Rebuild a damaged profile. If switching presets does not help, create a clean profile or reset only the affected device. Follow our safe controller-binding reset procedure rather than deleting every control profile or cloud save.
Confirm the profile displayed while the affected aircraft is loaded. A common mistake is editing another device’s preset, or testing an aircraft that is using a different assignment context, and assuming the mouse changes were ignored.
Why does the mouse work in menus but not in the cockpit?
If menus respond normally, the mouse hardware and Windows driver are working; the fault is usually cockpit focus, interaction behaviour or the loaded aircraft.
Close the toolbar, EFB and any detached panel, click back in the main cockpit view, then try a clearly interactive switch. If the simulator offers different cockpit interaction systems, change between them once as a diagnostic: conventional mouse users often find the legacy-style behaviour more familiar, while lock-style interaction may require engaging a control before adjusting it.
Test the same action in a default aircraft. One dead switch can be an aircraft-state issue, protected control or missing clickspot; every switch failing points towards focus or interaction settings. For that narrower symptom, use our detailed cockpit click and interaction troubleshooting.
Why does moving the mouse pan the camera instead?
The simulator is usually holding mouse-look or freelook active when mouse movement controls the camera instead of the pointer.
Release the right mouse button, toggle freelook off and check that the button is not physically sticking. In Controls, search the Mouse assignments for camera-look commands and remove unintended duplicates, especially assignments introduced by a custom preset or mapping utility. Our mouse-look and cockpit panning fixes cover this camera-specific problem without requiring a full controls reset.
Can a Community add-on disable mouse input?
An incompatible aircraft, cockpit modification or toolbar package can intercept mouse events even when the pointer still works elsewhere.
Close MSFS 2024, temporarily move the contents of the Community folder to a safe location, and test a default aircraft at a default airport. Do not alter the simulator’s official package folders. If mouse control returns, restore add-ons in small groups until the faulty package is identified.
If only one third-party aircraft is affected, reinstalling the entire simulator is unlikely to help. Reset that aircraft’s control profile, remove its optional cockpit modifications and check whether its switches require a particular interaction mode.
When is Windows or USB the real cause?
Troubleshoot Windows and USB only when the pointer also freezes outside the cockpit, disappears throughout the simulator, or fails in other programmes.
- Replace or recharge a wireless mouse battery and reconnect its receiver.
- Try a direct USB port instead of a hub or extension.
- Restart Windows to clear a captured or stalled input device.
- Temporarily close mouse companion software, overlays and controller-mapping utilities.
- Test another mouse before repairing or reinstalling MSFS 2024.
A simulator reinstall should be the last step. It will not normally correct a cloud-synchronised control profile, an active freelook command or a conflicting package in Community.
