Why does FS2004 show a black screen, and how do I fix it?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix an FS2004 black screen by testing windowed mode, rebuilding FS9.cfg, resetting graphics overrides and isolating faulty aircraft or scenery.

A black FS2004 (FS9) screen is usually caused by a failed full-screen mode, damaged FS9.cfg, forced graphics-driver settings, or a broken aircraft or scenery add-on. Switch to windowed mode first, rebuild FS9.cfg, then test default content before changing drivers or reinstalling the simulator.

What causes a black screen in FS2004?

The part of FS2004 that turns black usually identifies the cause. A completely black display is different from black gauges, missing panel artwork or dark terrain.

How do I fix the FS2004 black screen?

The quickest reliable method is to change one variable at a time, beginning with display mode and the simulator configuration.

  1. Switch between full-screen and windowed mode. If FS2004 is running and you can hear audio, press Alt+Enter once. If the picture returns, choose a resolution and 32-bit colour mode supported by the desktop before trying full-screen again.

  2. Rebuild FS9.cfg. Close FS2004, open %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9, and rename fs9.cfg to fs9.cfg.old. Launch the simulator so it detects the display hardware and creates a clean file.

This reset can remove custom display, sound and controller settings, but it does not delete installed aircraft or scenery. Keep the renamed file until the new configuration has been tested.

  3. Remove graphics-driver overrides. Set anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering to application-controlled for fs9.exe. Temporarily disable overlays, frame limiters, post-processing injectors and other tools that hook into the 3D display.

A mistake we see constantly is changing the driver, compatibility mode and FS9.cfg simultaneously. That may hide the cause and makes a working setting difficult to identify.

  4. Test default FS2004 content. Load a default aircraft at a default airport, preferably in clear daytime conditions. If that works, the simulator itself is rendering correctly and the fault belongs to an aircraft, scenery, weather or texture package.

Remove the most recently added package, or disable its scenery entry, and retest. For a global texture replacement, restore the original files from its backup rather than reinstalling unrelated add-ons.

  5. Try the Windows full-screen compatibility option. Open the properties for fs9.exe and test Disable fullscreen optimisations. Do not enable every compatibility setting or run permanently as administrator unless a specific permissions problem requires it.

If FS2004 also crashes, loses settings or fails before reaching the flight screen, use our broader modern-Windows checks for FS2004.

  6. Consider the display driver last. Update or reinstall it if other 3D programs are also affected, or roll back if the black screen began directly after a driver change. Reset the FS2004 driver profile before assuming the entire driver installation is faulty.

What if only the cockpit panel is black?

A panel-only black area is normally an aircraft panel fault, not a full FS2004 display failure. Check the battery, avionics master, generator and panel lighting first, especially if the panel artwork is visible but the gauges are dark.

Black instruments in default aircraft can require separate gauge-rendering checks covered in our diagnosis of black FS2004 cockpit instruments. If the problem affects only a downloaded aircraft, check for missing gauge files, panel bitmaps and incorrect aliases; our replacement-panel file and configuration checks explain the relevant structure.

Should I reinstall FS2004 to fix a black screen?

Reinstall FS2004 only if a fresh FS9.cfg, windowed mode and completely default aircraft and scenery all remain black. Reinstallation will not fix a forced driver profile or incompatible overlay, and immediately restoring the old configuration can bring the fault straight back.

Back up personal aircraft, scenery and saved flights, install the core simulator, then test it before restoring add-ons. On Windows 11, follow a clean FS2004 installation and first-launch procedure rather than copying the entire old installation over the new one.
