Fix Microsoft Flight Simulator activation errors by checking ownership, account sign-in, licences, Gaming Services, network access and updates.
Most Microsoft Flight Simulator activation errors are licence or account failures, not damaged aircraft files. Sign in to the account that owns the simulator on its platform storefront and gaming service, restore the platform licence, synchronise the device clock, disable VPNs temporarily, then update the launcher and licensing components.
Do not begin by deleting the Community folder or reinstalling hundreds of gigabytes. Activation normally happens before Microsoft Flight Simulator loads add-ons and world packages, so those actions rarely solve an ownership check.
What does an MSFS activation error mean?
An activation error means the platform cannot confirm your ownership, subscription or signed-in account. The wording identifies which part of that check has failed:
- Waiting for Authentication: the Microsoft or Xbox sign-in token has expired, the accounts do not match, or an account service is unavailable. Follow our steps for clearing an Xbox authentication loop.
- You are currently offline: the simulator cannot reach the account or licence servers. Work through these offline-startup and network checks.
- Error 0x80070005: Windows has denied access to a licence, folder or service rather than rejecting the purchase itself.
- Please insert the game disc or Do you own this game or app?: the wrong account is signed in, the subscription has expired, or the storefront licence cache is stale.
- Mandatory update or installation loop: the launcher and storefront may be on different versions, preventing the entitlement check from completing.
Which account has to own Microsoft Flight Simulator?
The account holding the entitlement depends on where Microsoft Flight Simulator was purchased or supplied through a subscription.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was not released on PlayStation; only Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available there. A Microsoft account linked inside a Steam or PlayStation copy does not transfer ownership between storefronts.
How do I repair Microsoft Flight Simulator activation?
Work through these fixes in order, stopping as soon as the simulator recognises the licence.
- Confirm the entitlement. Open the platform library or purchase history and verify that the correct edition appears under the signed-in account. If access came from a subscription, confirm that the subscription is active and covers the title. Do not purchase another copy merely because the launcher cannot see the first one.
- Close every related application. Fully quit Microsoft Flight Simulator, the storefront and the Xbox app, then restart the PC or console. On Xbox, remove the simulator from Quick Resume before relaunching it.
- Sign in again with the owning account. On Microsoft Store installations, sign out of both the Store and Xbox app, restart them, and use the entitled account. Steam users should start Steam in online mode under the purchasing account; the Microsoft account requested inside MSFS is the gaming profile, not the Steam licence.
- Correct the clock and connection. Set the device date, time and time zone automatically. Temporarily disconnect VPNs, proxies and filtered DNS services, then run the platform's network test. If a mobile hotspot allows activation, the router, DNS filter or security software is blocking the account check; restore normal security afterwards and allow the relevant platform services.
- Refresh the platform licence.
- On Microsoft Store PC installations, run
wsreset.exe, reopen the Store and check its library for updates. - On Steam, restart the client in online mode. If the launcher itself is damaged, use Steam's file-integrity check.
- On Xbox, restart the console and sign in with the owner. If another profile relies on sharing, verify that the console is configured as the owner's Home Xbox.
- On PS5, use
Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then launch MSFS 2024 from the owning PSN account.
- On Microsoft Store PC installations, run
- Update the launcher and platform components. Install pending updates for Microsoft Flight Simulator, the storefront client, the Xbox app, Gaming Services, Windows or the console system software. If the platform library is unavailable or several owned games fail at once, repeated reinstalls will not help. Wait and retry. If the platform shows MSFS as owned but only this simulator remains blocked, contact the support team for the storefront that supplied the licence and keep the purchase receipt or subscription record available.
Why does MSFS ask for a disc or say I do not own it?
For a digital copy, a disc prompt usually means the launcher cannot read the digital entitlement; it does not mean that a physical disc is required. Confirm the owning account, restart the storefront and refresh its licence cache.
A genuine boxed PC edition may require its designated authentication disc, depending on the edition. If a product code says it has already been redeemed, it is normally attached to the account that first used it and cannot be activated on a second account. Check any older Microsoft accounts before asking the retailer or platform support to trace the purchase.
Will reinstalling MSFS fix an activation error?
Reinstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator rarely fixes an account or ownership failure because the entitlement is held by the platform, not in the simulator's package folder. Reinstall only after the correct account shows ownership and the launcher still fails after licence refresh, app repair and file verification.
If reinstalling becomes necessary, record the existing content location and back up personal controller profiles or other local files first. Removing the Community folder is useful for crashes caused by add-ons, but it does not restore a missing licence.
Can Microsoft Flight Simulator be activated offline?
Initial entitlement verification normally requires an internet connection. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 can provide limited offline operation after successful installation and activation, but live weather, multiplayer and streamed scenery remain unavailable; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 depends much more heavily on cloud-streamed content.
An offline warning during startup does not prove that the licence has disappeared. Correct the connection, clock and account session first, then allow the simulator to complete one successful online launch before testing any supported offline mode.
