Why is there no sound in FSX, and how do I fix it?

Ian Stephens
In short

No sound in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition? Fix Q mute, Windows mixer and output routing, then diagnose silent aircraft, ATC and GSX.

No sound in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition is usually caused by the Q mute toggle, a zero Sound slider, Windows muting fsx.exe, or FSX retaining the wrong playback device. Press Q once, check FSX and Windows volume controls, select the output before launching FSX, restart it, then test a running default aircraft.

Fix no sound in FSX in this order

Most complete FSX sound failures can be fixed without reinstalling anything.

  1. Press Q once during a flight. Click inside the flight window first so FSX has keyboard focus. Q toggles simulator sound, and accidentally pressing it is a common cause of sudden silence.
  2. Check the FSX Sound page. Open Sound from the simulator’s Settings screen or Options menu. If the in-flight menu bar is hidden, press Alt to reveal it. Make sure sound is enabled and raise the Engines, Cockpit, Environment and Voice sliders above zero. Our guide to balancing FSX engine, cockpit, environment and voice levels explains what each control changes.
  3. Open the Windows volume mixer. Leave an active flight running so FSX appears as fsx.exe or Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Confirm its application volume is not muted or set very low.
  4. Test the intended Windows output. Play a Windows test sound through the speakers, headset or HDMI display you want to use. If Windows itself is silent, fix that device before changing FSX files.
  5. Select the correct playback device. Set the intended output as the Windows default. Where FSX offers separate Sounds and Voice device selectors, point both to that device or to Primary Sound Driver.
  6. Restart FSX completely. FSX often keeps using the output that existed when it launched. Connecting headphones or changing an HDMI display while a flight is running may not redirect the simulator.
  7. Load a default aircraft with its engine running. The stock Cessna 172 is a useful dividing line. If it has cockpit and external sound, the core FSX audio path works and the remaining fault belongs to the silent aircraft or add-on.
  8. Temporarily select Stereo in Windows. Use this when front-facing audio works but sounds from certain directions or views disappear. A surround configuration can send channels to speakers that are not physically connected.

If the symptom is simply “sound is not coming out” — suara tidak keluar in Indonesian, or ليش مافي صوت (“why is there no sound?”) in Arabic — treat it as total silence and complete the first six checks before editing aircraft files.

What does the FSX sound failure point to?

The pattern of missing audio identifies whether the fault is global, aircraft-specific or limited to voices and warning sounds.

Why does only one FSX aircraft or livery have no sound?

If default aircraft work, reinstalling or resetting all of FSX is the wrong first move.

A conventional aircraft should contain a folder such as SimObjects\Airplanes\[aircraft]\sound. It normally holds sound.cfg and the required audio files, or an alias directing FSX to another installed aircraft’s sound folder.

Check the affected entry in aircraft.cfg as well. A blank sound= value normally uses the standard sound folder; a named value selects a matching variant such as sound.name. This is why one repaint can be silent while the other liveries of the same aircraft work.

Files extracted one directory too deep, aliases pointing to aircraft you do not own, and incomplete downloads are frequent causes. Follow our aircraft-specific sound folder, alias and configuration checks before replacing files.

Complex aircraft may generate warnings and other audio through gauges or supporting modules rather than an ordinary sound.cfg. If the stock Cessna works, repair that add-on and its stated prerequisites instead of downloading codecs or replacement DLL files.

GSX no sound while normal FSX audio works

If aircraft engines and ATC work but GSX alone is silent, the global FSX sound system is not the main fault.

GSX uses its own add-on components, so editing the selected aircraft’s sound folder will not repair it. Check the audio options available in your installed GSX version, set the Windows output before starting FSX, and restart the simulator so the add-on module reloads. If GSX functions are also missing, use its original installer or updater to repair the installation and required components.

Why can I hear engines but not ATC?

Working engine audio with silent ATC usually means the FSX Voice channel is muted, misrouted or damaged.

Raise the Voice slider and inspect the separate Voice playback-device selector. If ATC text appears but no speech is heard, use our checks for diagnosing FSX ATC text with no spoken voice. If neither text nor speech appears, also check radio tuning, electrical power and the active communication radio.

When all other sounds dip or vanish only while ATC transmits, Windows may be treating the transmission as communications activity. The remedy is to change communications ducking or correct split Sounds and Voice routing; see our explanation of stopping ATC from muting or reducing external speakers.

No warning beep or “kein Piepen”

A missing beep does not necessarily mean all FSX sound is broken.

First confirm that the aircraft is powered and that the condition which triggers the tone actually exists. Stall warnings, marker tones, autopilot alerts and add-on call-outs do not behave identically across aircraft. Raise the Cockpit slider, then reproduce the expected warning in a default aircraft where practical.

If the default aircraft produces the sound but the add-on does not, investigate that aircraft’s gauge or module installation. Many sophisticated cockpit alerts are not ordinary WAV entries in the aircraft’s main sound folder.

Why does FSX lose sound after switching headphones?

FSX commonly continues sending sound to the playback device that was active at launch.

  1. Close FSX fully. Returning to the opening screen or reloading the flight is not always sufficient.
  2. Connect the required device. Set the headset, speakers or HDMI display as both the Windows default output and, where appropriate, the default communications device.
  3. Remove stale per-application routing. If Windows has assigned FSX to a disconnected monitor or old headset, change that assignment or return it to the system default.
  4. Reopen FSX and check both selectors. Sounds and Voice can be sent to different devices, so verify each one.

Choose Primary Sound Driver if you regularly change outputs and will set the Windows default before launching FSX. Select a named device when you always want FSX to use the same speakers and it repeatedly chooses the wrong output.

Bluetooth headsets may appear as separate stereo and hands-free devices. Use the stereo output for ordinary simulator listening; activating the headset microphone can force a lower-quality communications profile. HDMI audio presents a similar trap when Windows changes the default output after a monitor or television is disconnected.

Is Steam voice stuck on Connecting an FSX sound problem?

Steam voice stuck on “Connecting” is normally separate from FSX aircraft sound and built-in ATC speech.

Check Steam’s selected input and output devices, Windows microphone permission, the default communications device and whether voice works outside FSX. Restart the Steam client after changing those settings. Editing sound.cfg, reinstalling an aircraft or pressing Q will not repair a Steam client voice connection.

If the problem is FSX ATC text without speech rather than Steam voice chat, use the Voice checks above instead.

Do these fixes apply to Windows 10 and the original 2006 FSX?

Yes; the same diagnostic order applies to boxed FSX from 2006 and FSX: Steam Edition running on Windows 10 or later Windows releases.

Because FSX was designed around older desktop-audio behaviour, it does not reliably follow output changes made while the simulator is open. Windows 10 can also retain a separate output assignment and volume for each application, so inspect the FSX entry while an active flight is running.

Compatibility mode and running as administrator are not normal fixes for an isolated sound failure. They can affect add-on modules and should not replace checking Q, the two volume controls and device routing first.

Pressed Q and it did not fix the sound?

If you pressed Q and it did not restore sound to any default aircraft, reset FSX’s configuration before repairing the installation.

  1. Rename the active FSX configuration file. Exit FSX and open %APPDATA%\Microsoft\. Boxed installations normally use FSX\FSX.cfg. Steam Edition may use that same location when no boxed installation existed, while side-by-side installations can use FSX-SE\FSX_SE.cfg. Rename the applicable file with an .old suffix rather than deleting it, then launch FSX to generate a clean configuration. This resets many simulator preferences, so retain the backup.
  2. Verify FSX: Steam Edition files. Use Steam’s installed-file integrity check to restore missing or altered stock files. Back up modifications made directly inside default aircraft or global sound folders because verification can replace them.
  3. Repair boxed FSX from its installation media. Use the installer’s Repair option where available. Afterwards, confirm that the required expansion or service-pack level is restored before loading add-ons.
  4. Undo recent audio add-ons and modules. Disable them one at a time or restore known backups. Do not delete the global Sound folder as a troubleshooting shortcut.
  5. Check the Windows audio driver last. Repair or reinstall it when browsers, media players and other games are also silent or distorted. If every other application works normally, the driver is less likely to be the cause.

Default FSX aircraft use ordinary installed sound files and do not require a third-party codec pack. Random codec bundles and downloaded DLL replacements add risk without addressing the usual mute, routing, configuration or missing-file causes.
