Why are textures not loading in MSFS 2024?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix MSFS 2024 textures not loading, including pink materials, blurry ground, cache corruption, streaming faults, bad packages and add-on conflicts.

Textures fail to load in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 when streamed data is unavailable, the rolling cache or a content package is damaged, an add-on references missing files, or graphics memory is exhausted. Restart the sim, confirm Online Functionality, rebuild the rolling cache, isolate add-ons, then repair the affected package.

Which texture failure do you have?

The symptom usually identifies the fault faster than reinstalling the simulator. Test a default aircraft at a default airport first; that separates a system-wide problem from one broken aircraft, livery or scenery package.

How do I fix textures not loading in MSFS 2024?

Work through these steps in order and retest the same aircraft and location after each change. Changing the cache, graphics settings and add-ons together hides which action actually fixed the fault.

  1. Close MSFS 2024 completely. Quit the simulator rather than returning only to its main menu. On a console, close the suspended session instead of resuming it; on PC, also restart Windows if the problem appeared after a graphics-driver change or crash.
  2. Check whether the failure is local or global. Load a default aircraft at a default airport in clear daytime conditions. One faulty livery points to an add-on; missing textures across default content point to streaming, cache, installation or graphics memory.
  3. Restore online data. In the simulator's online settings, confirm Online Functionality and the relevant world-data options are enabled. Check that an in-sim data limit has not been reached and that the connection is stable. If multiplayer, weather and streamed scenery all fail together, avoid deleting packages until the online service is working again.
  4. Rebuild the rolling cache. Delete the existing rolling cache through the simulator's data or online settings, disable it, restart MSFS 2024, then enable it again if you normally use it. Keep enough free space on its drive. Enlarging a corrupt cache does not repair it.
  5. Repair the affected content package. Open the simulator's content or library screen, install available package updates and redownload only the aircraft, livery or scenery showing the problem. Do not manually erase the entire official-content folder; that turns a small repair into a large download.
  6. Test without third-party add-ons. On PC, rename the Community folder temporarily, for example to Community.disabled, and launch the simulator again. Use Safe Mode if it is offered after a crash. On consoles, disable or remove suspect add-ons through the content library. If textures return, restore packages in batches until the conflict reappears.
  7. Reduce graphics-memory demand. If textures initially look correct and then become soft or disappear after changing views, lower Texture Resolution by one step and reduce Terrain and Object Level of Detail. Remove unusually large livery packs from the test and close other GPU-heavy applications.
  8. Clear the shader cache for graphical artefacts. This is most useful for black materials, flashing surfaces or broken reflections after a driver or simulator update, not for a livery containing absent files. Follow our steps for clearing the MSFS 2024 shader cache; expect temporary stutter while shaders rebuild.
  9. Verify the base installation last. Use the repair or file-verification function supplied by the PC installation platform, or reinstall the affected content on console. Reinstall the entire simulator only when default assets remain broken after the online, cache, package and add-on tests.

What do pink or chequered textures mean?

Pink or chequered surfaces are fallback materials: MSFS 2024 could not find or read the texture or material that the object requested. They are not normally caused by choosing a low graphics preset.

If only one livery is pink, remove it and confirm that its exact base aircraft is present. If many default buildings are pink, concentrate on streamed data, cache corruption and official packages instead. A converted MSFS 2020 add-on can also load its model in MSFS 2024 while failing to resolve older material references correctly.

Should I clear the rolling cache or shader cache?

Clear the rolling cache for missing or stale streamed world textures; clear the shader cache for materials that render incorrectly despite their texture files being present.

CacheWhat it storesUse it when
Rolling cacheDownloaded world and scenery dataTerrain tiles repeat, remain low-resolution or fail after a connection interruption
Shader cacheCompiled GPU rendering dataSurfaces turn black, flicker or acquire incorrect reflections after graphics changes

Deleting both caches for every texture fault wastes time. Neither cache can repair a livery package that simply omits a required file.

Can low VRAM cause missing textures?

Low VRAM more often causes delayed, blurry or repeatedly reloaded textures than a single permanently pink object. Common clues are textures starting sharp and becoming soft after an external-camera change, cockpit detail loading late, and stutters as new scenery appears.

Lowering Texture Resolution and level-of-detail settings reduces demand. If the problem remains tied to one aircraft or livery regardless of settings, treat it as a package or dependency fault instead. Console users cannot manage VRAM directly, so a repeatable fault in one content package should be repaired through the content library.

Do I need to reinstall MSFS 2024?

A complete reinstall is rarely the first fix for MSFS 2024 textures not loading. It will not correct disabled online data, a service interruption, an incompatible Community add-on or a graphics-memory limit.

Redownload one affected package first, then verify the base installation. Reserve a full reinstall for failures affecting default aircraft and default scenery after the rolling cache has been rebuilt, add-ons have been removed and installation verification still reports no usable repair.
