Why is xPilot not connecting to X-Plane?

xPilot usually fails to connect because its X-Plane plugin is missing, installed in the wrong copy of X-Plane, disabled, blocked by security software, or incompatible with the client. Close both programs, reinstall or update xPilot against the correct X-Plane folder, confirm the plugin loads, then check Log.txt and local firewall rules.

What does “Waiting for X-Plane connection” mean?

This message means the xPilot desktop client cannot communicate with its plugin inside X-Plane. It is a local connection problem, not necessarily a VATSIM outage or account fault.

xPilot uses two separate connections, so identify which one has failed before changing anything:

CSL model matching, aircraft liveries and voice-device settings do not establish the local simulator connection. Leave those alone until xPilot recognises X-Plane.

How do I fix xPilot waiting for X-Plane?

Fix the local link by installing a matching xPilot client and plugin into the X-Plane installation you actually launch.

  1. Close xPilot and X-Plane completely. Check that no second xPilot process remains open before making changes.
  2. Find the active X-Plane folder. Multiple X-Plane 11 or 12 installations are common, particularly after moving a copy or keeping separate test installations. The correct root folder contains the X-Plane executable and Resources directory.
  3. Inspect the plugin location. The xPilot plugin belongs under X-Plane/Resources/plugins/. Avoid an extra wrapper directory such as Resources/plugins/xPilot/xPilot/, because X-Plane may not discover a plugin nested too deeply.   4. Reinstall the matched client and plugin. Move the existing xPilot plugin folder out of Resources/plugins, then run the supported xPilot installer and point it at the correct X-Plane root when prompted. Do not merge a new plugin over files copied from an older release.
  5. Start X-Plane before connecting. Load an aircraft, open the Plugins menu and confirm that xPilot appears. Then start one xPilot client instance. This sequence is not mandatory for normal use, but it makes diagnosis clearer.
  6. Check local security controls. Permit both X-Plane and xPilot through the operating system firewall and any trusted security suite. A VPN, endpoint-security tool or loopback filter can block communication between programs on the same computer. No router port forwarding or X-Plane Data Output configuration should be required.
  7. Test without other third-party plugins. Temporarily move other add-on plugins outside Resources/plugins, leaving xPilot in place, and try again. If that works, restore them individually using the same one-add-on-at-a-time conflict test.

A mistake we see constantly is updating the desktop client while leaving an old plugin inside a different X-Plane installation. Treat the client and its bundled plugin as a matched pair.

What should I look for in X-Plane’s Log.txt?

Log.txt reveals whether X-Plane found xPilot, loaded it successfully or rejected its plugin binary. The file is in X-Plane’s root folder and is replaced when a new simulator session starts, so close X-Plane after reproducing the fault and inspect that session’s log.

  • No xPilot reference: the plugin is in the wrong X-Plane copy, has an invalid folder structure or was never installed.
  • Plugin found but not loaded: read the nearby error for an unsupported binary, missing dependency, permission problem or security quarantine. Reinstall from the trusted package rather than downloading individual DLL files.
  • Plugin loaded successfully: concentrate on a client-version mismatch, duplicate xPilot process or software blocking local communication.
  • Crash during plugin loading: remove xPilot and confirm that X-Plane starts, then reinstall it cleanly. If X-Plane still fails, use our clean-start and crash-isolation checks for X-Plane 12.

The final line in Log.txt is not always the component that caused a crash. Use it as a lead, then prove the cause by removing or restoring one plugin at a time.

What if xPilot sees X-Plane but will not connect to VATSIM?

If xPilot reports that the simulator is connected, its X-Plane plugin is working and reinstalling that plugin is unlikely to help. The remaining fault is between the xPilot client and VATSIM.

  • Re-enter the VATSIM account ID and password, checking for copied spaces or an outdated saved password.
  • Confirm that the callsign is valid and is not already connected through another client session.
  • Run only one xPilot instance and allow it outbound internet access through the firewall.
  • Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy if the connection times out.
  • Update xPilot when its message indicates an unsupported client or protocol rather than repeatedly retrying the same installation.
  • Distinguish a network failure from a voice failure. If the network connection succeeds but voice does not, inspect xPilot’s audio devices and voice settings instead of the X-Plane plugin.
