Why can't I connect to VATSIM, and how do I fix it?

Ian Stephens
In short

Can't connect to VATSIM? Diagnose account, pilot-client, SimConnect, plug-in, firewall and voice faults in MSFS, FSX, P3D and X-Plane.

If you cannot connect to VATSIM, first identify whether the failure is between the simulator and pilot client or between that client and VATSIM. Use the correct client, load into an aircraft before connecting, verify your VATSIM CID and password, then check SimConnect or the simulator plug-in, firewall access and network service status.

What does your VATSIM connection error mean?

The client status or error message usually identifies which part of the connection has failed. Do not reinstall everything before separating a simulator-link problem from a VATSIM account or internet problem.

How do I fix VATSIM not connecting?

  1. Use the correct pilot client. Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX and Prepar3D normally use vPilot on a compatible Windows PC. X-Plane uses xPilot. FlightGear requires its own compatible connection method rather than vPilot or xPilot.
  2. Start in the correct order. Launch the simulator, load an aircraft at a parking stand and wait until the flight is fully running. Open the pilot client afterwards and confirm that it detects the simulator before attempting the VATSIM login. Never connect while positioned on a runway.
  3. Check the local simulator link. If the client cannot detect MSFS, FSX or Prepar3D, the fault is usually SimConnect rather than your VATSIM account. With X-Plane, confirm that the xPilot plug-in appears in the simulator's plug-in manager and that only one copy is installed.
  4. Verify your VATSIM account. Enter your numeric CID, not an email address or callsign, and use the correct account password. Remove accidental spaces introduced by copying and pasting. Confirm that membership activation is complete and the account is not inactive or suspended; do not create a second account to work around an account problem.
  5. Eliminate duplicate sessions. Run only one pilot client and make sure the same account is not connected from another computer. If the previous session ended badly, close the client completely, wait briefly and try again with a valid callsign.
  6. Test firewall and network restrictions. Allow the pilot client through Windows Firewall and any security suite, but do not leave security software disabled. Turn off a VPN or proxy for the test. Port forwarding is not normally required because the client creates an outbound connection.
  7. Update or cleanly reinstall the client. Use a supported client release. If reinstalling xPilot, remove obsolete duplicate plug-in copies; if reinstalling vPilot, remember that this will not repair a broken SimConnect installation by itself.

A flight plan is not required merely to connect, so repeatedly editing or refiling one will not solve an authentication, SimConnect or plug-in failure.

Which simulator connection should I check?

Microsoft Flight Simulator

On the PC editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, vPilot depends on SimConnect to detect the running simulator. If vPilot remains disconnected from the simulator, follow our steps for diagnosing and repairing the MSFS SimConnect interface before changing VATSIM credentials.

FSX and Prepar3D

Both simulators also rely on SimConnect when used with vPilot. For FSX, our FSX connection-order and SimConnect checklist covers the usual installation and authentication faults. In Prepar3D, first determine whether other SimConnect-based add-ons can see the simulator; if none can, the problem is simulator-side rather than a VATSIM outage.

X-Plane

xPilot needs both its desktop component and the correctly installed X-Plane plug-in. Check that the plug-in is enabled, that it is under X-Plane's Resources/plugins structure, and that an old duplicate is not loading first. Our X-Plane 12 client and plug-in setup covers audio, credentials and plug-in placement.

FlightGear

FlightGear does not connect through vPilot or xPilot. It needs a compatible bridge and correctly configured multiplayer details; use our FlightGear-specific VATSIM connection procedure rather than applying MSFS instructions.

Why am I connected to VATSIM but have no voice or traffic?

A successful network login does not prove that voice, radios or model matching are working. For voice, select the intended microphone and playback device in the pilot client, assign push-to-talk, power the aircraft radios, tune the controller's frequency into the active COM radio and select that radio on the audio panel.

If other pilots are absent visually, first confirm that traffic actually exists nearby. Then check the client's model-matching package and rules. Missing models may produce invisible aircraft, generic substitutions or model errors even though the network connection is healthy. Disable unrelated live, multiplayer or AI traffic if it causes duplicates or conflicts.

Why does VATSIM connect and then disconnect?

Repeated disconnections usually indicate unstable Wi-Fi, a VPN, security software interrupting the client, a duplicate login or a client process that has crashed. Read the client log around the first disconnection rather than the later retries, then test a wired or alternative connection. If many users are affected at once, wait for VATSIM's network service to recover.

Can Xbox or PlayStation connect directly to VATSIM?

No standard VATSIM pilot client runs directly on Xbox or PlayStation. Microsoft Flight Simulator on those consoles cannot expose the PC interfaces required by vPilot, so a console copy alone cannot connect to VATSIM. Moving vPilot to an unrelated PC does not solve this because it still needs a supported connection to the running simulator.
