Learn why flight simulator ATC assigns a low altitude and how to fix cruise levels, route types, planner sync, constraints and unsafe descents.
In a flight simulator, ATC usually assigns an unrealistically low altitude because it is reading a low cruise level, a low-altitude airway, an arrival constraint or an out-of-sync flight plan. Built-in ATC can also mishandle terrain and descent logic. Check the plan ATC loaded, not only the route shown in the aircraft’s FMC or GPS.
Across Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane, ATC normally works from the filed plan rather than calculating the ideal altitude from live aircraft performance. Selecting a higher altitude on the autopilot does not amend that plan, and editing the FMC may not tell ATC about the change.
Why is built-in ATC choosing the wrong altitude?
When the low instruction appears usually identifies the underlying flight-plan or ATC problem.

How do I correct an unrealistically low ATC altitude?
Correct the flight-plan source read by ATC, then obtain a new clearance rather than repeatedly changing the autopilot altitude.
- Read the exact instruction. An initial altitude such as 3,000 or 5,000 feet may be a temporary departure restriction, not the final cruise level. “Expect” information is also not an immediate climb clearance.
- Inspect the filed plan. In MSFS 2020 and 2024, the planning screen, EFB, ATC plan and aircraft avionics may not remain synchronised after every edit or with every aircraft. Use a high-altitude route for an airliner sector long enough to justify it, and a low-altitude route for suitable general-aviation operations. Account for terrain, aircraft performance, direction-of-flight rules and the distance needed to climb and descend.
- Audit every altitude constraint. Look for incorrect “at”, “at or above” and “at or below” restrictions, duplicated waypoints and the wrong SID, STAR or approach. Do not delete valid restrictions merely to make ATC climb; brief the published IFR altitudes and descent points first.
- Synchronise and refile. After a substantial route, runway or cruise-level change, cancel the old built-in IFR service and file the corrected plan again, or reload the flight if the simulator retains stale data. Changing only the FMC or selected autopilot altitude is not enough.
- Check the altimeter. Set the reported QNH below the applicable transition altitude and standard pressure above it. A pressure error generally explains a modest discrepancy, not an airliner being kept thousands of feet below its planned cruise level.
- Run a simple control flight. Use a default aircraft, a short plan created inside the simulator and no imported route. If ATC then assigns the expected level, the original plan, aircraft integration or procedure data caused the problem.
Is a low ATC altitude always unrealistic?
A low assignment can be correct when it is an intermediate departure altitude, an approach-intercept altitude or the practical cruise level for a short flight.
The minimum sector altitude shown on an approach chart is an emergency reference, not a blanket altitude restriction. Real radar controllers may use a minimum vectoring altitude that pilots cannot see, so an instruction below the chart’s sector altitude is not automatically wrong. Published airway minimums, procedure restrictions, terrain and obstacle clearance provide better evidence.
Aircraft efficiency is a separate issue. Keeping a jet at 10,000 feet for a long en-route segment may be wasteful without being immediately unsafe; sending it towards rising terrain at 3,000 feet is a safety failure.
What should I do if ATC assigns an unsafe altitude?
Do not descend towards terrain or force an unstable approach merely to satisfy built-in simulator ATC.
Maintain or climb to a safe altitude, request a higher level if the simulator offers that option, and cancel or disregard the built-in IFR service if necessary. Go around when a late descent leaves the aircraft too high, too fast or improperly configured.
With online human ATC, query the instruction and state that you are unable because of terrain or aircraft performance rather than silently deviating.
