Yes. In most flight simulators, you can ignore or disable built-in ATC and fly entirely on your own. Use free-flight mode, avoid requesting a clearance or flight following, and manage navigation, altitude and traffic separation yourself. Missions, career activities and online ATC networks may still require communication.
In Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D, air traffic control is separate from the aircraft’s flight model and avionics. The controls, navigation aids, GPS or FMS and autopilot will continue working without ATC.
How do I fly without ATC?
Start an unrestricted flight and make sure neither you nor an assistance system establishes an ATC service.
- Choose free flight. Avoid lessons, challenges, missions or career activities that list radio calls and clearances as objectives.
- Plan the route normally. You can load a VFR or IFR route into the GPS or FMS. Loading a route does not require you to contact ATC, although some simulators may begin offering clearance prompts.
- Do not request a service. Leave IFR clearance, taxi clearance and flight-following options unused. Free-flight modes will generally let you depart without them, even though doing so at a controlled airport is not realistic.
- Cancel an active clearance. If you have already contacted ATC, use the available option to cancel IFR, terminate flight following or end the service. Closing the ATC window only hides the interface; it may not cancel anything.
- Disable radio automation. Turn off automatic ATC responses, AI-assisted communications, frequency automation, ATC notifications or voice audio as required. The labels differ between simulators and versions.
- Manage traffic yourself. Disabling ATC does not necessarily remove AI or multiplayer aircraft. Maintain a visual lookout, use TCAS where fitted and alter course or altitude when traffic conflicts develop.
When is flying without ATC a good choice?
Flying without ATC works best for unrestricted sightseeing, aircraft familiarisation and self-directed procedure practice.

This freedom applies to simulation, not unrestricted real-world flying. Controlled airports and airspace require the appropriate clearances, while pilots at non-towered aerodromes may still make traffic broadcasts even though no controller is present. Flying without ATC does not always mean flying radio-silent.
Will the autopilot and flight plan still work?
Yes, because the autopilot and navigation system do not depend on ATC. The aircraft can follow selected headings, altitudes and GPS or FMS routes exactly as it would after receiving a clearance.
What disappears is external direction. No controller will assign a runway, provide vectors, sequence your descent or keep you separated from other traffic. You must select the arrival and approach, set safe target altitudes and intercept the final approach correctly; merely loading an approach does not guarantee that the aircraft will activate or fly it.
Why do ATC messages continue after I close the panel?
ATC services, cockpit radios, assistance settings and message audio are often separate systems, so hiding the panel may leave the active service running.
- Clearance prompts continue: cancel the active IFR clearance or flight-following service rather than closing its window.
- Your aircraft answers automatically: disable the AI co-pilot or automatic radio-communication assistance.
- You hear other aircraft: your COM radio may still be tuned to an active frequency, and AI traffic can continue transmitting.
- Text boxes remain: disable ATC subtitles or notification prompts separately from voice audio.
- Dialogue cannot be stopped: the flight may be a scripted activity in which radio messages form part of the objective.
What do I lose by not using ATC?

Solo flying is often the cleaner choice for sightseeing, systems work and repeated approach practice. If you later want realistic workload and phraseology, use a properly prepared flight with live human ATC; do not connect to a controlled network and then ignore the controller.
