Is FlightGear as realistic as X-Plane 11?
Both can be highly realistic, but aircraft implementation matters more than the simulator label. A carefully developed FlightGear aircraft using JSBSim can reproduce convincing aerodynamic and systems behaviour, while a poorly tuned model in either simulator can produce implausible handling.
X-Plane 11 applies its core aerodynamic model consistently, which gives aircraft developers a familiar framework. FlightGear allows different flight-dynamics engines and deeper experimentation, but that flexibility creates wider variation between aircraft. Compare documented speeds, power settings, stall behaviour, trim response and systems logic rather than judging realism from cockpit graphics.
Neither ordinary home installation automatically makes logged training valid. Formal approval applies to a complete combination of software, hardware and operating conditions under the relevant aviation authority, not merely to the simulator’s brand name.
Which has better scenery and add-ons?
X-Plane 11 generally has the stronger scenery and add-on ecosystem, while FlightGear makes worldwide flying available without buying regional packages. X-Plane’s advantage is the depth of its mature freeware and commercial catalogue; FlightGear’s is open access and automatic scenery retrieval.
In FlightGear, TerraSync can fetch scenery near the aircraft, although slow downloads, an unwritable cache or an incorrect scenery path can leave terrain missing. X-Plane 11 installs global scenery by region and loads third-party packages from Custom Scenery. Its scenery_packs.ini order matters: airports normally belong above overlays and orthophoto base layers.

Add-on compatibility is not universal. An aircraft or plugin marked for X-Plane 12 may not work in X-Plane 11, and older plugins may lack a suitable binary for a modern operating system or processor architecture. FlightGear aircraft can also depend on features from a particular simulator build.
Which runs better on a low-end PC?
Neither simulator is universally faster because aircraft complexity, scenery density, weather, resolution and graphics hardware can reverse the result. FlightGear can run well with restrained settings, but detailed aircraft and atmospheric effects are not automatically lightweight simply because the software is free.
X-Plane 11 often becomes CPU-limited at complex airports or with high object density; resolution and anti-aliasing place more pressure on the GPU. Heavy aircraft plugins can become the main bottleneck. For a useful comparison, test a default light aircraft in clear weather at the same screen resolution before adding scenery, plugins or AI traffic.
Storage behaviour differs too. X-Plane’s selected global regions occupy space from the outset, whereas FlightGear can accumulate downloaded TerraSync scenery as you explore. A slow connection or full cache can therefore appear to be a graphics fault when the missing terrain has simply not arrived.
Common setup mistakes that distort the comparison
Most bad first impressions come from controller conflicts, missing scenery or incompatible add-ons rather than the underlying simulator.
- Bind each flight axis once. A joystick and gamepad both controlling pitch or throttle will cause twitching, unexpected power changes and poor trimming.
- Establish a clean baseline. Test a default aircraft at a standard airport with third-party plugins disabled before blaming the flight model or frame rate.
- Check scenery installation. In X-Plane 11, inspect
Custom Sceneryandscenery_packs.ini. In FlightGear, confirm that the TerraSync cache is writable and that the required tiles have finished downloading. - Match the add-on to the simulator generation. Do not assume X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 aircraft, plugins or scenery libraries are interchangeable. On macOS and Linux, verify that plugins include a compatible platform binary.
- Change one performance setting at a time. This reveals whether the limit is object processing, aircraft systems, resolution, anti-aliasing or weather rather than hiding the cause behind a low global preset.
Should you choose FlightGear or X-Plane 11?
Choose FlightGear for zero-cost openness and experimentation; choose X-Plane 11 for a more cohesive package, integrated Windows VR and mature add-on compatibility.
- Pick FlightGear if you want to inspect or modify the simulator, use Linux extensively, experiment with flight-dynamics models or fly without purchasing the base software.
- Pick X-Plane 11 if you value consistent menus and controller setup, already own compatible aircraft or scenery, or want established support for complex procedural aircraft.
- Keep X-Plane 11 if an existing installation already performs well and supports the aircraft and plugins you use. A newer simulator does not make a stable setup useless.
