Prepar3D v5 is better when you already own compatible P3D aircraft, scenery and utilities, or need an FSX-derived Windows training platform. Neither is the choice for a fresh modern setup.

Which simulator has the better flight model?
X-Plane 11 generally has the stronger out-of-the-box flight-dynamics proposition, particularly for general aviation, experimental aircraft and helicopters.
X-Plane calculates aerodynamic forces across sections of the model rather than relying only on traditional performance tables. That can make stalls, slips, control response and unusual configurations feel more coherent. It does not guarantee accuracy: incorrect geometry, engine data or control deflections still produce an inaccurate aircraft.
Prepar3D v5 uses the mature ESP-derived simulation architecture. A carefully developed P3D aircraft with custom systems and flight modelling can be far more realistic than a weak X-Plane model. For serious IFR flying, the quality of the specific aircraft, avionics and failure simulation matters more than the underlying marketing label.
Prepar3D's training focus also does not make an ordinary home installation a certified training device. Certification applies to an approved combination of software, hardware, controls and documented configuration.
Which has the better aircraft and scenery add-ons?
Prepar3D v5 wins when you already depend on a compatible P3D ecosystem; otherwise, compare the exact aircraft and airports you intend to use.
P3D's FSX ancestry gave it a large catalogue of aircraft, airports, weather tools, traffic programs and cockpit utilities. The catch is version compatibility. An installer labelled for FSX, P3D v3 or P3D v4 is not automatically safe or functional in v5, especially when it installs gauges, modules or compiled code.
Before treating an old library as an asset, check what can actually be moved from FSX into Prepar3D v5. Copying entire aircraft or scenery folders without checking gauges, effects, SimConnect dependencies and installer targets is a mistake we see constantly.
X-Plane 11 has its own substantial aircraft, scenery and plugin catalogue. Its common compatibility traps are different:
- X-Plane 12 aircraft are not automatically compatible with X-Plane 11, and upgraded aircraft packages may no longer include the older version.
- Custom scenery can appear missing or incorrect when its order in
scenery_packs.iniis wrong. - Scenery packages may require separate object libraries that are not included in the airport download.
- Older plugins may conflict with the Vulkan or Metal renderer and should be updated or removed during troubleshooting.
Does Prepar3D v5 or X-Plane 11 run better?
Neither simulator is universally faster; performance depends heavily on aircraft systems, scenery, traffic, weather and graphics settings.
Updated X-Plane 11 installations can use Vulkan on Windows and Linux or Metal on macOS, while Prepar3D v5 uses DirectX 12. Both can run smoothly on suitable hardware, but both can also be limited by one busy CPU thread or by exhausted graphics memory.
In X-Plane 11, high world-object density, reflections, shadows and complex plugins can become expensive. In Prepar3D v5, dense autogen, long scenery draw distances, dynamic lighting, AI traffic and sophisticated aircraft can have a similar effect. Reducing resolution alone will not fix a CPU-bound main thread.

Which one should you choose?
Choose X-Plane 11 for an uncomplicated home simulator; choose Prepar3D v5 to preserve a valuable P3D setup or support a defined training workflow.
Choose X-Plane 11 when:
- You prioritise general aviation, helicopters or aerodynamic behaviour.
- You need macOS or Linux support.
- You want straightforward consumer licensing.
- You are starting without a large collection of P3D-only products.
- Your required aircraft and scenery are confirmed to support X-Plane 11.
Choose Prepar3D v5 when:
- You already own aircraft and utilities explicitly compatible with v5.
- A specific P3D airliner or training application is central to your flying.
- You use an established FSX/P3D cockpit, instructor station or networked configuration.
- You are prepared to manage version-specific installers, modules and scenery compatibility.
Both products are previous-generation releases: X-Plane 12 succeeds X-Plane 11, while Prepar3D v6 succeeds v5.
