X-Plane 11 is the better all-round simulator for most people: it is 64-bit, has modern graphics and weather, supports more platforms, and generally offers stronger out-of-the-box flight dynamics. Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator X instead if you own valuable FSX add-ons or specifically want its enormous legacy aircraft and scenery catalogue.
Both simulators belong to older generations, but their strengths are quite different. FSX is a Windows-only platform built around a vast legacy ecosystem; X-Plane 11 is a newer, multi-platform simulator with native VR, a 64-bit engine and a more convincing stock flying environment.

Does X-Plane 11 have better flight physics than FSX?
X-Plane 11 usually feels better when hand-flying, but its blade-element flight model does not automatically make every aircraft accurate.
X-Plane calculates aerodynamic forces across sections of the wings, control surfaces and propellers as the aircraft moves. This tends to produce convincing responses to sideslip, gusts, configuration changes and low-speed handling without relying entirely on predefined performance tables.
FSX uses aerodynamic coefficients and lookup tables prepared by the aircraft developer. A carefully tuned FSX aircraft can therefore outperform a poorly configured X-Plane model. Complex airliners may also use custom flight models, so systems depth and developer quality matter more than the base simulator alone.
For general aviation, experimental designs, helicopters and hands-on flying, we would favour X-Plane 11. For practising cockpit flows in a specific add-on aircraft, choose the simulator containing the better rendition of that aircraft. Neither desktop product becomes an approved training device merely because its flight model is convincing.
Can FSX look as good as X-Plane 11?
FSX can be transformed with add-ons, but X-Plane 11 provides the stronger visual baseline with less work.
Stock FSX exposes its age through flat lighting, low-detail ground textures, repetitive autogen and simple weather effects. Replacement textures, airports, landclass, meshes and weather tools can improve it dramatically, but every layer adds installation work and consumes part of FSX's restricted memory budget.
X-Plane 11 has more natural lighting, denser airport detail and a more coherent global environment by default. It is not visually modern by the standards of newer simulators, and its stock clouds and regional scenery still have limitations, but our technical review of X-Plane 11's graphics and performance shows why it is the easier starting point.
When is FSX the better choice?
FSX is the better choice when its specific content matters more than its ageing engine.
- You already own an FSX collection: replacing specialist aircraft, airports and utilities can cost more time and money than changing the base simulator appears to save.
- You enjoy missions: FSX includes structured scenarios and lessons that X-Plane 11 does not directly match.
- You prefer its built-in ATC: FSX ATC is limited and sometimes unrealistic, but its radio interaction and AI traffic handling are generally easier to use than X-Plane 11's default system.
- A required aircraft exists only for FSX: add-on availability should take priority when one particular type is the reason you are buying a simulator.
- You want a familiar legacy platform: FSX remains appealing for classic add-ons and the Microsoft Flight Simulator experience of that era.

What problems do FSX and X-Plane 11 users encounter?
FSX is most vulnerable to memory limits and obsolete installers, while X-Plane 11 more often suffers from plugin conflicts and incorrect scenery ordering.
- FSX out-of-memory errors: Adding physical RAM does not remove the simulator's 32-bit address-space limit. Reduce high-resolution scenery, autogen and AI traffic, then disable overlapping add-ons until the flight loads reliably.
- FSX installer failures: Old packages may expect the boxed edition or a different installation path. Check that an add-on explicitly supports your FSX edition rather than forcing files into guessed folders.
- X-Plane plugin crashes: Temporarily move third-party plugins out of
Resources/plugins, launch the simulator cleanly, and restore them one at a time.Log.txtusually identifies the last plugin or component loaded. - Missing X-Plane scenery: Check required libraries and the order recorded in
Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. Installing scenery for X-Plane 12 does not guarantee that it will work in X-Plane 11.

Which simulator should you choose?
Choose X-Plane 11 if you are starting without an existing add-on collection; choose FSX when its legacy content is the main attraction.
- Pick X-Plane 11 for better stock flight dynamics, 64-bit stability, native VR, broader operating-system support and a more modern visual foundation.
- Pick FSX for its mission content, accessible default ATC, established aircraft catalogue or compatibility with add-ons you already own.
- Check the add-on first if your decision revolves around one aircraft, airport or specialist utility. The quality and compatibility of that product may decide the issue.
For a new installation on hardware capable of running both, our verdict is X-Plane 11. FSX still makes sense as a deliberate legacy choice, but it requires more add-ons and troubleshooting to overcome the limitations of its older engine.
