How do I depart KATL on VATSIM?

How do I arrive at KATL on VATSIM?
A successful KATL arrival depends on briefing early, respecting STAR restrictions and verifying every runway change before modifying the FMS.
- Copy the ATIS before top of descent. Identify the landing direction, advertised approaches and likely runway. Brief an alternative because runway changes are common when traffic is being balanced across the parallel approaches.
- Check the STAR transition. The arrival loaded in the FMS must match the clearance and connect sensibly to the filed route. A STAR in the flight plan does not by itself authorise descent.
- Check in concisely. State your callsign, present altitude, assigned altitude and ATIS letter. Add the arrival name if useful: “Atlanta Approach, N123AB, one one thousand descending niner thousand, information Bravo.”

- Verify the parallel approach. Check the runway, localiser frequency or identifier, final course and missed-approach instructions against the chart. Capturing the localiser for an adjacent runway is a serious but avoidable Atlanta error.
- Land, vacate and wait for the hand-off. Leave the runway at a safe taxiway and cross the holding-position marking completely. Do not cross another runway without explicit permission, and remain with Tower until told to contact Ground.
What KATL mistakes cause the most trouble?
The most disruptive KATL errors come from procedure mismatches, incomplete taxi readbacks and changing the aircraft setup without checking what the automation will do.
- Outdated navigation data: If the cleared SID, STAR or transition is missing, report “unable” and request another procedure or vectors. Do not silently substitute a similarly named procedure.
- Wrong runway transition: After any runway change, inspect the arrival’s final fixes and discontinuities before executing it. Activating an approach can otherwise make the aircraft turn away from an assigned vector.
- Taxiing from memory: Trace the complete clearance on the airport diagram. A clearance to taxi does not include permission to cross a runway unless that crossing is stated.
- Scenery and chart disagreement: Older scenery may have different taxiway signs or markings. Stop in a safe place, tell Ground about the mismatch and request directions you can follow; never cross a runway while trying to improvise.
- Self-changing frequency: Do not switch merely because a chart lists another controller. Atlanta positions can be split during busy events, so wait for the assigned hand-off.
- Accepting an unsupported clearance: Say “unable” if the aircraft cannot fly an RNAV procedure, required speed or assigned approach. Early honesty is easier for ATC to accommodate than a deviation close to the runway.
What should I do when Atlanta ATC is offline?
When no Atlanta controller is online, pilots must coordinate their own movements while still using charts, standard traffic patterns and runway-crossing discipline. Check the controller list first because Centre or Approach may be providing top-down coverage even when no local KATL position appears.
In US airspace, VATSIM may designate an airport-specific CTAF; use the frequency displayed for KATL by the network or pilot client. Can I fly VFR into or out of KATL on VATSIM?
