To fly into or out of Denver International Airport (KDEN) on VATSIM, use current charts, file a valid route, load the assigned SID or STAR, and expect runway changes, long taxi distances and high-altitude performance effects. Read back every clearance, follow controller amendments, and never cross a runway without explicit clearance.

This guidance is simulator-independent and applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX. The avionics differ, but the same VATSIM instructions and charted KDEN procedures apply. The workflow below assumes IFR, the usual choice for airline operations; VFR pilots must still observe online ATC instructions and Denver Class B requirements.

What should you prepare before connecting at KDEN?

Prepare the airport diagram, route, likely procedures and aircraft performance before connecting at a vacant stand. Denver has a large airfield, several closely named runways and enough taxi distance that improvising from the cockpit often causes missed turns or runway incursions.

  • Current charts: Open the KDEN airport diagram and procedure plates. Check each plate's revision against the AIRAC cycle installed in the aircraft; if the controller assigns a fix missing from your database, report that you are unable and request another procedure or vectors.

  • Performance data: Calculate take-off and landing performance using the aircraft's own method. KDEN is roughly 5,434 feet above mean sea level, so hot weather can produce a high density altitude and noticeably weaker acceleration and climb performance.

Connect at a gate or parking stand, not on a taxiway or runway. Check nearby network traffic before spawning, then confirm that your callsign matches the one in the flight plan.

How do you depart KDEN on VATSIM?

A safe KDEN departure follows the clearance in the aircraft, not merely the route originally filed.

  1. Identify the active controllers. Listen to the VATSIM ATIS and use the frequencies shown for online positions. A real-world frequency printed on a chart does not mean that the corresponding VATSIM position is staffed.
  2. Request and copy the clearance. Give your callsign, parking position, destination and ATIS code. Record the clearance limit, route, altitude, departure frequency and transponder code, then read back all assigned elements. Words such as expect do not authorise an altitude or procedure.
  3. Programme the assigned departure. Enter the SID, runway transition where applicable, en-route transition and cleared altitude. Compare the first several fixes and all altitude constraints with the chart. A mistake we see constantly is leaving the transition for the runway originally expected after ATC assigns another runway.
  4. Request push and taxi correctly. Follow the controller information for ramp procedures, and never push onto a movement area without the required approval. Write down the complete taxi route and trace it on the airport diagram before moving.
  5. Stop at every assigned hold point. Read back hold-short instructions with the full runway designator, including Left or Right. Taxi clearance does not permit an unspoken runway crossing; cross only when the controller explicitly clears it.
  6. Verify the runway before take-off. Check the sign, heading, departure course, first fix and cleared altitude. Enter the runway only after a line-up or take-off clearance addressed to your callsign.
  7. Fly the issued climb. Follow runway heading, a SID or radar vectors exactly as cleared. Climb via SID means observe its published altitude constraints up to the authorised altitude; an FMC climb profile by itself is not ATC clearance.

Denver's elevation deserves special attention. Charted altitudes are MSL, so an indicated 8,000 feet is only about 2,600 feet above the airport. Jet crews should use valid take-off data rather than assuming a reduced-thrust setting is suitable, while piston pilots should set mixture for maximum take-off power according to the aircraft handbook.

How do you fly an arrival into KDEN?

A KDEN arrival requires an early STAR and approach briefing because a runway change can alter the transition, frequencies, minima and final sequence.

  1. Review the arrival before descent. Obtain the ATIS, check which controllers are active and compare the expected STAR with the loaded route. A filed STAR is not guaranteed, and the controller may replace it with another procedure or radar vectors.
  2. Obey the actual descent clearance. Do not descend merely because the FMC has reached top of descent. Maintain the last assigned altitude unless ATC issues a descent, a descend via clearance or an approach clearance that authorises the applicable published descent.

  5. Accept a visual only when ready. Have the airport or assigned traffic in sight and be able to continue safely. If not, say so and request an instrument approach rather than accepting a clearance you cannot complete.
  6. Vacate and obtain taxi instructions. Leave the runway completely, remain on the tower frequency until handed off, then tell ground which ramp or concourse you need. Do not stop with any part of the aircraft beyond the hold line on the runway side.

If you go around, state it immediately and follow the published missed approach unless ATC assigns something else. Do not improvise a turn towards the downwind or reprogramme the aircraft before establishing a safe climb.

What KDEN mistakes cause the most trouble on VATSIM?

Most KDEN problems come from procedure mismatches, premature altitude changes, runway confusion or inadequate high-elevation performance planning.

Offline ATC and late runway changes

An offline Denver tower does not necessarily mean the airport is uncontrolled on VATSIM. Denver Approach or Denver Center may provide top-down service, so use the active controller list and contact instructions rather than calling frequencies solely because they appear on a chart.

If no controller covers KDEN, use the network's designated advisory frequency under the applicable VATSIM guidance. Make short position and intention calls before taxiing, entering or crossing a runway, taking off, joining the approach and after vacating. Continue using published procedures, but remember that an absent controller cannot provide separation or issue a clearance.

For a late runway or approach change, read it back and decide whether you can reconfigure safely. Ask for a delay or vectors if needed; unable is better than entering the wrong procedure while heads-down.
