Sectionals are supplied as PDF and georeferenced raster files, while low- and high-altitude IFR en-route charts are available as PDFs. Verify each chart’s printed effective dates before using it.
Where can I get free PDF sectional charts and IFR en-route downloads?
The FAA provides free PDF sectional charts and IFR en-route PDF downloads through its Aeronautical Information Services Digital Products catalogue. The chart files themselves do not require a paid subscription.
- Use the official digital chart catalogue. Avoid planner screenshots, cropped chart images and files uploaded without an edition date.
- Select the correct product. Choose VFR Raster Charts for sectionals or IFR Enroute Charts for the FAA low- and high-altitude series.
- Check the coverage index. Sectionals are often named after a major city but cover a much wider area. IFR charts use numbered sheets or panels, so confirm that the route falls within the depicted coverage.
- Choose the file format. Download the PDF for ordinary viewing or printing. Choose GeoTIFF when compatible mapping software needs the sectional’s geographic coordinates.
- Inspect the chart before planning. Confirm its title, chart number, edition and effective period rather than trusting the download date or filename.
For simulator planning, you can also download our indexed FAA sectional PDFs and GeoTIFFs. For real-world operations, retrieve the file from the responsible aviation authority and complete the usual pre-flight checks.
Outside the United States, “sectional” may not be the local term. Use the country’s aeronautical information service, AIP or eAIP and look for VFR charts and ENR chart indexes. Free availability, chart formats and reuse licensing vary between jurisdictions.
Which sectional or en-route chart should I download?
Choose the chart by flight rules, planned altitude and phase of flight; one PDF rarely covers an entire IFR flight from parking stand to parking stand.

Low- and high-altitude definitions are not identical in every country, so the chart legend and national rules take precedence. Routes crossing a chart boundary require the adjacent sheet, and a flight that changes between low- and high-altitude structures may need both series. Should I choose a PDF or GeoTIFF?
Choose PDF for reading and printing; choose GeoTIFF only when supported software needs a georeferenced chart image.
- PDF: The simplest option for a second screen, tablet or printed planning copy. FAA chart sheets are large, so text may become unreadable when an entire sheet is reduced to one household-sized page.
- GeoTIFF: Retains geographic positioning for compatible GIS and moving-map applications. A normal image viewer may open it without using that positioning data.
- Printed chart: Use actual size or
100%when chart scale matters, tile the pages if necessary, and verify any printed scale marks. “Fit to page” changes the scale.
Do not assume that a PDF is georeferenced, or that displaying a GeoTIFF makes the software or device suitable for real-world navigation. Cropping or converting a chart can also remove its legend, effective dates and marginal information.
How do I check whether a downloaded chart is current?
A chart is current only during the effective period printed on the chart itself.
- Confirm the identity. Check the chart title, number and geographic coverage. Adjacent sheets overlap, which makes the wrong panel easy to select.
- Read the effective dates. Find the edition and effective or replacement dates in the chart margin, collar or title block. The computer’s modified date proves nothing about chart validity.
- Watch for future editions. The next chart may be published before its effective date. A newer download is not necessarily the edition in force.
- Remove cached copies. Browsers, tablets and document libraries can reopen an older file saved under a familiar name. Store the edition or effective date with the chart if the original filename does not make it clear.
- Check later operational changes. Charts cannot depict every NOTAM, temporary flight restriction, facility closure or short-notice frequency change issued after publication.

Why does a current chart disagree with my flight simulator?
A current chart can disagree with a simulator because chart imagery, aircraft navigation data, planning data and scenery are updated independently.
- Missing airway or fix: Compare the AIRAC cycle loaded in the aircraft or planner with the cycle represented by the route. Navigation databases commonly follow 28-day AIRAC cycles, while FAA sectional and en-route chart editions generally last 56 days.
- Different runway or frequency: Check the chart’s effective period, applicable NOTAMs and the simulator scenery date. A navigation database update does not necessarily rebuild an airport.
- Terrain, roads or landmarks do not match: The simulator’s scenery may depict a different period or simplify real-world features. That mismatch does not establish that the sectional is wrong.
- The planner looks like a chart but shows different symbols: Some planners draw their own database over a basemap rather than displaying the published chart image.
For the fewest simulation discrepancies, use charts, planner data and aircraft navdata representing compatible cycles. If an aircraft deliberately carries older data, choose a route and procedures that exist in that loaded cycle rather than forcing a new airway or approach into the FMC.
Can free charts be used for real-world flying?
Yes—an unaltered official FAA chart does not lose its official status because it is supplied free of charge, but it must still be current, complete, legible and suitable for the operation.
For an actual flight, obtain the chart directly from the responsible authority, comply with applicable operator and electronic-flight-bag requirements, and check NOTAMs, temporary airspace information and other required pre-flight material. A free chart is not a substitute for a proper briefing.
Community mirrors, simulator maps, planner screenshots and cropped images are useful simulation aids, but they should not be the primary source for real-world navigation. In particular, reject any copy that omits the chart title, legend or effective dates.
