These resources differ in scope. A walkaround sheet is not a complete operating checklist, while a normal-procedure checklist may assume that you already know the cockpit flows between its challenge-and-response items.
How do I choose the right checklist for my add-on?
The best checklist matches the exact aircraft variant, cockpit configuration, simulator and add-on rather than merely sharing the same aircraft family name.
- Identify the variant. Distinguish between engine models, analogue and glass cockpits, short and stretched variants, and passenger or cargo configurations where relevant.
- Match the simulator and aircraft package. An FSX checklist can still explain an aircraft’s broad procedure, but its switch names and panel layout may not match MSFS, Prepar3D or X-Plane.
- Check the starting state. A cold-and-dark checklist is different from one written for a turnaround state or a flight loaded with the engines already running.
- Confirm the coverage. Look for the phases you need: pre-flight, start, taxi, take-off, climb, cruise, descent, approach, landing and shutdown.
- Read installation instructions before copying files. PDF and text checklists need no simulator installation. Gauges, scripts and panel utilities may require a specific simulator or add-on; back up any configuration file before changing it.

Do not assume an FSX checklist gauge belongs in an MSFS Community folder. A document can be read with any simulator, but executable gauges and scripted utilities rely on simulator-specific panel systems and interfaces.
Why does the checklist not match the cockpit?
A mismatch usually means the checklist covers a different variant, avionics fit, add-on or initial aircraft state.
- Same aircraft name, different panel: a Cessna 172 with analogue instruments does not use every step found on a glass-cockpit version.
- Different systems depth: a simplified aircraft may not model every fuel, hydraulic, electrical or test function listed in a detailed checklist.
- Checklist rather than tutorial: many normal checklists verify a memorised flow, so they do not describe every switch movement.
- Wrong starting state: battery, external power, fuel pumps or avionics may already be configured when the checklist assumes a cold cockpit.
A mistake we see constantly is treating every simulation of the same aircraft type as interchangeable. Use the documentation supplied with the aircraft package as the authority for what is actually modelled. If a listed control does not exist, mark that item as not modelled rather than inventing a substitute action.
Can I use a real-world checklist in a simulator?
Yes, a real-world checklist can provide authentic sequencing, but it may not match the simulated aircraft’s equipment, operating policy or systems depth.
Airline and professional checklists also assume approved procedures, cockpit flows and prior training; they are rarely written as beginner instructions. Choose a simulator-specific checklist when you need exact switch locations and add-on compatibility, and use real-world material mainly for procedural context.
Any checklist downloaded for flight simulation is for simulator use only. It must not replace approved aircraft documentation or operational checklists in a real aircraft.
