Where can I download free MSFS 2024 airports?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find free MSFS 2024 airports, check compatibility, install them on PC, avoid scenery conflicts, and understand Xbox and PS5 limits.

Free MSFS 2024 airports are available in our freeware scenery library, where you can search by airport name or ICAO code and check each package’s compatibility notes. On PC, install supported packages in the Community folder; Xbox and PlayStation 5 cannot use airport files downloaded from the web.

Where should I look for free MSFS 2024 airports?

Start with our dedicated MSFS freeware scenery library. It includes upgraded international airports, regional fields, military bases and small grass strips, with individual descriptions covering features, installation and known requirements.

Search by the airport’s ICAO code rather than only its name. Codes such as EGKK or KJFK are less ambiguous and help distinguish an airport from similarly named cities, older versions and regional scenery packages.

For American airfields, our United States MSFS scenery collection provides a more focused list. A package such as the free Gatwick Airport scenery for EGKK also shows the sort of terminal, taxiway, lighting and ground-detail changes an airport overhaul can include.

Most downloadable freeware airports are enhancements rather than entirely new destinations. They replace or improve the simulator’s generated airport buildings, markings, lighting, parking positions and terrain.

How do I choose an MSFS 2024-compatible airport?

Choose a package that explicitly mentions Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 support, or whose author confirms that the MSFS 2020 version works in 2024. Many conventional scenery packages transfer successfully, but compatibility is not automatic.

  • Confirm the ICAO code: airport names and municipal boundaries can change, while the package may represent a different field nearby.
  • Read the compatibility notes: look for MSFS 2024 confirmation, known visual faults and any required libraries.
  • Check dependencies: missing object or texture libraries can produce empty areas, generic buildings or bright pink surfaces.
  • Avoid overlapping versions: do not run two third-party packages for the same airport at once.
  • Check the default airport type: a freeware replacement can conflict with a handcrafted or enhanced airport already supplied by Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Before installing an unfamiliar package, use our practical checks for safe MSFS 2024 freeware, including archive inspection, documentation and sensible testing.

How do I install a free airport in MSFS 2024?

Most PC airport packages are extracted into the active MSFS 2024 Community folder, although packages supplied with an installer should follow their own instructions.

  1. Close Microsoft Flight Simulator: do not add or replace scenery while the simulator is loading packages.
  2. Extract the download: do not place the unopened ZIP, RAR or 7Z archive in the Community folder.
  3. Inspect the folder structure: the airport package normally has files such as manifest.json and layout.json near its root. Remove unnecessary wrapper folders created during extraction.
  4. Use the correct Community folder: MSFS 2024’s active package location can differ by installation type and selected storage path. Do not assume that an old MSFS 2020 folder is shared.
  5. Copy one version only: remove an older release of the same airport before adding its replacement.
  6. Launch and test: begin a flight at the airport and inspect the terminal, taxiways, terrain and night lighting before installing more scenery.

Why is the freeware airport missing or broken?

A missing airport is usually caused by the wrong Community folder, an extra nested directory or an incompatible package. Visual duplication normally means that two scenery packages are modifying the same location.

ProblemLikely causeWhat to do
Airport does not appearWrong folder or unopened archiveConfirm the active Community folder and check the extracted package structure.
Duplicate terminals or jetwaysTwo airport versions are activeRemove the older or less suitable package and keep only one replacement.
Pink or missing objectsA required library is absentRead the package description and install only the stated dependencies.
Terrain spikes or sunken apronsConflicting elevation or regional sceneryTemporarily remove nearby scenery packages to identify the conflict.
Long loading or a crashDamaged, outdated or incompatible packageRemove the airport, restart the simulator and test a clean load before reinstalling.

A mistake we see constantly is installing several airports at once and then having no idea which one caused the fault. Add packages individually and test each location; troubleshooting becomes much quicker.

Can Xbox and PS5 install free MSFS 2024 airports?

Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 cannot install Community-folder airport downloads from the web. Console users are limited to scenery distributed through the in-simulator Marketplace, including any airport packages explicitly offered there at no charge.

Marketplace catalogues and package availability can differ between platforms. A freeware airport available as a PC download should not be assumed to have an Xbox or PS5 edition.
