Is there a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 manual?

Find the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 manual alternatives: built-in training, checklists, EFB help, control guides and aircraft documentation.
Ian Stephens

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 does not have one comprehensive official PDF manual for the whole simulator. Its guidance is split between built-in Flight Training, assistance and control menus, aircraft checklists, the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), and documentation supplied with individual aircraft. Together, these resources serve as the practical user guide.

What replaces the MSFS 2024 user manual?

The simulator replaces a book-style manual with several task-specific sources.

ResourceWhat it coversMain limitation
Flight TrainingBasic aircraft control, take-off, landing and introductory proceduresIt does not teach every aircraft or system
Controls and Assistance menusActive bindings, device profiles and piloting aidsThey explain configuration rather than aircraft operation
Aircraft checklistsOrdered cockpit procedures for the selected aircraftSome are abbreviated and do not explain why each action is required
Electronic Flight BagFlight planning and operational informationIt is a working tool, not a complete flying lesson
Aircraft documentationSystems, limitations and procedures for a particular modelAvailability and depth vary between aircraft

The Controls screen is the authority for your installed setup because assignments can change with the active device profile. Our reference for MSFS 2024’s default keyboard assignments is useful as a starting point, but customised bindings always take precedence.

The EFB is central to normal operation in MSFS 2024, particularly for preparing a flight. We cover its main functions and common setup problems in our practical explanation of the 2024 EFB.

Where can I find aircraft-specific manuals?

Begin with the aircraft’s cockpit checklist, EFB or dedicated tablet, then use any documentation supplied specifically for that aircraft.

If an add-on includes a PDF or integrated manual, check that it matches the exact aircraft variant and avionics fit. Instructions written for one version of an airliner may be wrong for another version carrying different flight-management or autopilot equipment.

On PC, do not assume every manual will be inside the Community folder. Default, streamed and Marketplace aircraft may not expose ordinary package files, while console users cannot browse installation folders at all. Documentation availability therefore depends on how the aircraft was distributed.

A real aircraft Pilot’s Operating Handbook can explain limitations, speeds and procedures, but it is not a substitute for simulator-specific documentation. A simulated aircraft may model different equipment, simplify systems or assign controls in a way the real handbook never discusses.

What should a new pilot read first?

New pilots should combine the built-in lessons with a correctly configured control profile rather than trying to read one large manual from start to finish. Our broader beginner’s introduction to flight simulation explains the basic terminology and equipment choices.

  1. Complete the introductory Flight Training activities. They establish the view, throttle and primary flight-control basics needed for everything else.
  2. Configure one device profile at a time. PC users can follow our step-by-step control-profile setup; remove duplicate axis assignments before troubleshooting the aircraft.
  3. Learn how to search control bindings. Searching by action is more reliable than copying a generic keyboard chart, particularly after customisation.
  4. Practise with a simple aircraft. Follow its checklist from a parked start, then repeat the same flight until trimming, flaps, brakes and navigation make sense.
  5. Add the EFB and more complex systems gradually. Trying to learn flight planning, avionics and an airliner cockpit simultaneously hides the cause of most mistakes.

Can I use a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 guide?

An MSFS 2020 guide remains useful for general flying, navigation and aviation terminology, but it should not be trusted for menu-by-menu MSFS 2024 instructions.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has a different interface, its own EFB and additional modes such as Career Mode. Aircraft versions, control assignments and option locations can also differ. For aircraft procedures, confirm that the guide covers the same model, avionics and simulated product.

Why does a guide not match my simulator?

A guide usually fails to match because it was written for another simulator version, platform, aircraft variant or active control profile.

  • Wrong profile: Connecting another controller can select or create a different profile, so the displayed binding no longer matches the expected command.
  • Duplicate input: A yoke, gamepad and joystick may all control the same axis, producing movement that appears to ignore the instructions.
  • Platform differences: PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 use different button prompts and interface conventions.
  • Assistance settings: Automated rudder, trim or other aids can change the aircraft’s response while you follow a manual procedure.
  • Different avionics: Two visually similar aircraft may use different autopilots, navigation units or flight-management systems.
  • Interface changes: Simulator updates can relocate an option even when the underlying procedure remains valid.

When instructions disagree with the simulator, verify the simulator version and aircraft first, then check the active profile in the Controls screen. That resolves more apparent manual errors than reinstalling the aircraft or resetting every setting.
