To capture an ILS in Microsoft FS2004, tune the runway’s ILS frequency in NAV1, set the front course, select NAV rather than GPS, and intercept the localiser from below the glideslope. Engage the autopilot, establish a shallow intercept, then arm APP before crossing the localiser or glideslope.
What must be set before APP mode will work?
APP mode needs a valid NAV1 ILS signal and suitable intercept geometry before the autopilot can acquire the approach. - Correct runway: Confirm that the runway direction you are approaching has an ILS. An ILS installed for the opposite end does not automatically serve both directions.
- NAV1 frequency: Enter the published ILS frequency in the active NAV1 window, not the standby window or NAV2.
- Front course: Set the course selector to the published inbound ILS course. Do not set its reciprocal.
- NAV source: Put the panel’s NAV/GPS or CDI selector in
NAVorVLOC. A GPS flight plan can lead you towards the approach, but APP mode requires the radio localiser and glideslope signals. - Position: Approach the localiser from below the glideslope, preferably at an intercept angle of about 15–30 degrees.
How do I capture the ILS step by step?
Use heading and altitude hold to establish the aircraft on a level intercept, then let APP mode capture the localiser first and the glideslope second.
- Confirm the ILS details. Check the runway, frequency and inbound course. Some procedures provide localiser guidance without a glideslope, so APP mode cannot command an ILS descent on those approaches.
- Tune and identify NAV1. Place the frequency in the active NAV1 window and, where the panel supports it, listen for the Morse identifier. A moving course-deviation needle alone is not proof that you selected the intended runway.
- Set the inbound course. Rotate the course or OBS selector to the published front course. The aircraft should be approaching the localiser from the correct side rather than flying outbound or towards a back course.
- Establish the intercept. Use HDG mode to fly towards the localiser while holding an altitude below the glideslope. Reduce speed and configure the aircraft early enough that the autopilot is not trying to capture while you are making large power or flap changes.
- Arm APP or APR. With the autopilot engaged, press the panel’s APP or APR button before the localiser centres. Leave altitude hold engaged during the level intercept; on normal glideslope capture, the autopilot should transition from altitude hold to the ILS descent automatically.
- Verify both captures. The autopilot should turn onto the localiser as the lateral needle centres. When the glideslope descends towards the centre from above, the aircraft should lower its nose and begin descending.
- Control speed and monitor the approach. APP mode does not automatically manage power on most FS2004 aircraft. Use the throttles, extend gear and flaps at the appropriate points, and be ready to disconnect the autopilot if the indications or flight path become unstable.
When should I press APP in FS2004?
Arm APP after the ILS is tuned and received, while established on a shallow intercept below the glideslope, but before crossing the localiser. Pressing it after flying through the beam gives the autopilot little room to capture, especially in a fast aircraft.

How can I tell whether APP has actually captured?
A lit APP button does not necessarily mean both parts of the ILS have been captured. Panel annunciations vary, so watch the aircraft and instruments: localiser capture produces a turn that centres the lateral needle, followed by glideslope capture when the vertical needle centres and the aircraft begins descending.
The normal order is localiser first, glideslope second. If the aircraft descends before becoming established laterally, disconnect the autopilot and reposition rather than trying to rescue an unstable approach.
Why will APP mode not capture the ILS?
Most FS2004 APP failures come from the wrong navigation source, incorrect radio setup or approaching from above the glideslope.

Will APP mode land the aircraft automatically?
No. In standard FS2004 aircraft, APP mode tracks the localiser and glideslope but should not be treated as an automatic landing system. You remain responsible for power, configuration, approach minima, autopilot disconnection, flare and rollout.
Some add-on aircraft model more capable autopilots, while others impose extra arming or radio requirements. Follow that aircraft’s documentation rather than assuming its APP logic matches the default FS2004 panels.
