Assign reverse thrust to a joystick or throttle in FS2004, then fix button, axis, detent and calibration problems that can stop it working.
In FS2004, assign a joystick or throttle button to the Throttle (decrease) command in Options > Controls > Assignments. After touchdown, move the physical thrust lever fully to idle, then hold that button to pass below idle into reverse. Release it and press F1, or move the lever forward, to cancel reverse.
How do I bind reverse thrust to a joystick button?
- Load a reverse-capable aircraft. Use a jet or another aircraft known to have working reverse thrust so that an aircraft limitation does not confuse the controller test.
- Open the control assignments. Go to
Options > Controls > Assignmentsand select the relevant joystick or throttle device. - Find the throttle command. In the buttons and keys section, locate Throttle (decrease), which is the same function assigned to F2 by default.
- Assign the button. Choose the assignment option, press the desired controller button or reverse-detent switch, and remove any conflicting command already attached to it.
- Test from idle. Put the physical throttle fully back, hold the assigned button and watch for reverse deployment or an increase in reverse power. To leave reverse, release the button and press F1 to restore idle, or move the throttle forward far enough for FS2004 to register it.
The command is not a simple on/off reverser toggle. It decreases thrust normally until idle, then continues into reverse while held. A quick tap may produce little visible response, so hold the button for the required reverse setting.

Can I use a throttle detent or analogue reverse lever?
A reverse detent works natively when the controller reports it as a button, but a true analogue reverse range usually needs additional configuration.

FS2004's standard throttle-axis assignment treats the aft endpoint as idle rather than providing a dependable negative section for an analogue reverser. If separate engine reversers are required, native controls can also become awkward because throttle commands act on the selected engines; specialised axis mapping is the cleaner choice.
Why does the assigned reverse-thrust button not work?
Test the default F2 command first: move the throttle fully to idle and hold F2. Our FS2004 keyboard command reference confirms the standard throttle controls. If F2 works but the controller does not, the fault is in the assignment or hardware setup.
- The throttle has not reached idle: reverse cannot engage while FS2004 still sees positive thrust. Recalibrate the axis and confirm that its aft endpoint reaches idle.
- Axis jitter cancels reverse: a noisy throttle can keep sending small forward inputs. Add a modest null zone at the idle end or recalibrate the controller.
- The wrong command is assigned: use Throttle (decrease), not throttle cut. Throttle cut returns the engines to idle but does not build reverse power.
- The button has a conflict: remove any second assignment such as brakes, view changes or another engine command.
- The wrong controller is selected: FS2004 stores assignments by device. Check that the command was bound under the throttle or joystick actually being used.
- The add-on uses custom logic: some complex aircraft intercept the standard throttle commands and require their own panel control, configuration utility or documented detent procedure.

Does every FS2004 aircraft support reverse thrust?
No. The aircraft model and its configuration must support reverse or propeller beta operation. Most suitable jet transports respond to the standard command, while many piston aircraft and some add-ons do not.
If F2 works in a default reverse-equipped jet but not in one particular aircraft, leave the controller assignment alone. The issue lies with that aircraft's configuration or custom systems rather than FS2004's global controls.
