Fix FS2004 scenery pop-in and terrain loading squares with frame-rate, graphics, FS9.cfg and add-on checks that target the real bottleneck.
To reduce scenery pop-in and visible terrain-loading squares in FS2004, set a finite frame-rate target, enable extended terrain textures, reduce processor-heavy autogen, traffic and clouds, then tune FS9.cfg terrain radii conservatively. If the same square fails every flight, isolate the local scenery or ground-texture add-on instead; that pattern usually indicates damaged or incompatible files.
Why does FS2004 load terrain in squares?
FS2004 divides ground textures into tiles, so a delayed or missing tile appears as a hard-edged square. The useful clue is whether that square eventually sharpens, remains blank or always appears at the same geographical position.

How do I reduce scenery pop-in in FS2004?
- Back up FS9.cfg. Close FS2004, enter
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9in File Explorer and copyFS9.cfgsomewhere safe. If the file is hidden, enable the display of hidden items. - Set a sustainable frame-rate limit. Start around 25–30 FPS rather than Unlimited, then choose a target the computer can hold in demanding areas. FS2004 can use the time left between rendered frames to prepare terrain; an unlimited target often leaves the scenery loader behind.
- Verify extended terrain textures. Enable the extended terrain texture option if your installation exposes it in the display settings. This pushes textured terrain farther out, but switch it back off if the computer then falls behind continuously.
- Reduce competing workload. Lower autogen, AI traffic and detailed cloud settings by one step before sacrificing ground-texture resolution. These settings consume processor time that FS2004 also needs for terrain and scenery loading. - Run a controlled test. Use a default aircraft, clear weather and a default airport in the affected region. Fly the same route at the same speed after each change; otherwise traffic, weather and aircraft complexity can disguise the result.
- Check recent add-ons. If the issue started after installing mesh, landclass, photoreal ground textures or airport scenery, untick the relevant entry in the Scenery Library and restart FS2004. Change one layer at a time so the faulty package remains identifiable.
Which FS9.cfg settings affect terrain loading?
The main FS2004 controls are the terrain radius entries and the texture bandwidth multiplier, but larger values are not automatically better. Aggressive settings can increase loading demand until the simulator produces more pop-in and stuttering than it did before.

Edit only while FS2004 is closed, change one value at a time and keep the last known-good file. Increase a terrain radius modestly, repeat the same flight and revert it if frame time or loading becomes worse. Do not paste FSX tuning lines such as LOD_RADIUS into FS2004 and expect them to work. If a collection of old tweaks has left the configuration unreliable, rename FS9.cfg with the simulator closed and let FS2004 generate a clean one. Keep the backup because regeneration resets display, realism and other preferences.
Is an add-on causing the terrain squares?
A geographically fixed square usually points to the add-on rather than general performance. Common causes include an incomplete texture folder, conflicting landclass layers, a misplaced scenery-library entry or the abrupt edge of photoreal coverage.
Terrain mesh and ground textures serve different purposes: mesh shapes the elevation, while texture and landclass packages control the visible surface. Will an SSD or more RAM eliminate FS2004 pop-in?
An SSD can reduce file-access delays, but it cannot fix an overloaded FS2004 rendering thread or a missing scenery file. Extra memory helps only when Windows is under memory pressure; it does not extend the terrain radius by itself.
Keep adequate free disk space and close programs performing heavy disk or processor work. Defragmentation can help a badly fragmented mechanical hard drive, but it should not be run on an SSD.
Can terrain pop-in be removed completely?
FS2004's tile-based terrain system always has a practical loading limit, especially during fast, low-level flight over detailed scenery. The aim is to move texture transitions farther away without creating a larger backlog. A stable frame-rate cap and conservative radius values usually look better than maximum settings that the simulator cannot sustain.
