Learn how to install FS2004 ground textures and terrain mesh safely, choose the right folders, set scenery priority and fix display problems.
In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9), install terrain mesh as a scenery area containing a Scenery folder, then activate it in the Scenery Library. Install ground-texture replacements only in the folder named by the add-on’s readme, backing up overwritten files first. The two add-on types are not interchangeable.
What is the difference between ground textures and terrain mesh?
Terrain mesh changes the shape and elevation of the ground, while ground textures change its visible surface. Mesh can make mountains, valleys and coastlines more accurately defined, but it does not provide sharper ground imagery. A texture replacement can improve fields, rock, grass or airport paving, but it cannot add elevation detail.

How do I install terrain mesh in FS2004?
The safest method is to give each mesh package its own folder under Addon Scenery and activate that folder through FS2004’s Scenery Library.
- Close FS2004 and extract the download. Extract it to a temporary folder rather than opening files directly from the archive. Read the supplied instructions before moving anything.
- Inspect the folder structure. A normal package may look like
Region Mesh\Scenery\*.bgl. If it already has a parent folder containingScenery, retain that structure. - Move the complete area into FS2004. For example, create
Addon Scenery\Region Mesh\Sceneryand place the mesh BGL files in the finalSceneryfolder. Do not put BGL files in aTexturefolder. - Activate the parent folder. From FS2004’s Settings screen, open the Scenery Library, choose Add Area and select

Keep broad regional mesh below custom airports and other highly local scenery. Restart FS2004, then test somewhere inside the mesh package’s stated coverage.
Mesh is usually regional, so it will not change terrain outside its coverage area. A regional mesh package covering New York and New England, for example, should be tested within that region rather than at an unrelated airport.
Some mesh packages explicitly instruct you to copy their BGL files into Scenery\World\Scenery. That global layer is already active, so no Scenery Library entry is needed. Follow that method only when the package documentation requests it; a separate layer is much easier to disable or remove.
How do I install ground-texture replacements?
Ground-texture installation depends on whether the add-on replaces FS2004’s global files or supplies a self-contained scenery area.
- Confirm the package type and simulator. Use only files intended for FS2004 unless the author explicitly states otherwise. FSX and later simulators use different assets and folder arrangements.
- Back up every file that will be overwritten. Copy the original files to a separate backup folder outside FS2004. Preserve their original paths so they can be restored correctly.
- Copy files to the documented destination. Global replacements may target
Scenery\World\Textureor another stock texture directory, but there is no universal destination. Never guess from the word “texture” alone. - Register self-contained scenery instead. If the package has sibling
SceneryandTexturefolders, keep them beneath one parent folder and add that parent to the Scenery Library. Do not scatter those textures among FS2004’s global files. - Restart and compare like with like. Test at the same location, date and season. FS2004 uses seasonal texture variants, and some replacements affect only particular land or airport surface types.

Do not convert FS2004 textures with an ordinary image editor unless you understand the simulator’s required formats and mipmaps. A file can retain a .bmp extension yet still be unusable by the simulator.
Can terrain mesh and ground textures be used together?
Terrain mesh and ground textures can be installed together because they control different parts of the scene.
Install and test one package at a time. That makes it clear which add-on caused a new problem. Put custom airports above broad regional scenery; direct global texture replacements do not have a Scenery Library priority because they replace files loaded by an existing layer.
FS2004 generally uses the most detailed mesh available in an area, so placing a coarse mesh at the top does not necessarily make it override a finer one. Overlapping mesh packages of similar detail can still produce unexpected results, making separate, clearly named layers useful.
Why is the new mesh or texture not showing?
Most failed installations come from an incorrect folder level, an inactive scenery area or files copied into the wrong FS2004 installation.
