Why does FS2004 taxi steering feel too sensitive?

FS2004 normally connects the rudder axis directly to a steerable nosewheel or tailwheel, without a separate global tiller-response curve. Excessive ground speed therefore magnifies even a modest rudder input.

First establish whether the problem affects every aircraft or only one. If all aircraft are difficult to control, check the controller, assignments and taxi technique. If one aircraft is affected, its configured steering angle or custom flight model is the more likely cause.

How do I adjust the rudder controls?

Calibrate the controller before changing sensitivity, because a sensitivity slider cannot correct a noisy, off-centre or duplicated axis.

  1. Test at a genuinely low taxi speed. Bring the throttle back to idle and use brief brake applications before judging the steering response.
  2. Check axis assignments. In FS2004's control assignments, make sure only one device controls the rudder axis. A joystick twist grip and rudder pedals assigned together are a common cause of erratic steering.

  4. Adjust the null zone sparingly. Increase it only enough to stop unwanted movement around the centre. A large null zone creates a dead area followed by an abrupt steering response.
  5. Reduce rudder sensitivity in small steps. This makes the nosewheel less responsive, but FS2004's slider also reduces available rudder authority rather than creating a sophisticated response curve. Check that full rudder remains available for take-off, landing and crosswind control.
  6. Verify the toe brakes. Each brake axis should return fully to its released position. A reversed or partly applied brake can make the aircraft pivot and feel far more sensitive than the steering really is.

How do I reduce steering on only one aircraft?

For an aircraft-specific problem, reduce the maximum nosewheel or tailwheel steering angle in that aircraft's aircraft.cfg file.

  1. Back up the file. Copy aircraft.cfg before making any change.
  2. Open the contact-point section. Find [contact_points] and inspect the point.n entries.
  3. Identify the steering gear entry. It is often point.0, but this is not guaranteed. The eighth comma-separated value, counting the initial gear-class value as number one, is the maximum steering angle in degrees.
  4. Lower the angle gradually. Reduce an ordinary steerable wheel's value by roughly 10–20 per cent, save the file and reload the aircraft. Repeat only if necessary.

Do not blindly alter a value of 180; that normally represents a freely castering wheel rather than 180 degrees of commanded steering. Some complex add-ons also control steering through custom gauges or code, in which case the contact-point change may have little effect.

If an edit refuses to save, the FS2004 installation may be protected by Windows permissions. Preserve the original file, ensure the edited file has not acquired a hidden .txt extension, and confirm that the simulator is loading the aircraft folder you changed.

The default DC-3 has its own ground-handling peculiarities, so a purpose-built FS2004 DC-3 taxi-steering correction is more appropriate than weakening every aircraft's rudder response.

What if I taxi with the keyboard or use auto-rudder?

Keyboard rudder input is digital and cannot provide the same fine proportional control as an analogue axis. Use short taps, apply the rudder-centre command as needed, and keep the aircraft slow before attempting a tight turn.

With working rudder pedals or a twist joystick, disable auto-rudder so aileron commands do not add unwanted yaw while taxiing. Keyboard users may still find auto-rudder useful, but its coupled response offers less precise ground steering than a correctly calibrated rudder axis.
