Which FS2004 realism upgrades make the biggest difference?
Controls, flight dynamics and believable operating conditions usually add more realism than high-resolution textures alone.
- Calibrate the controls. Set each axis so it reaches full travel, then use the smallest null zone that removes unwanted jitter. Disable auto-rudder when you have a working rudder axis, and learn to trim rather than holding continuous pressure on the controls.
- Use a well-modelled aircraft. Accurate power, drag, stall and fuel behaviour matter more than cosmetic detail. Keep an aircraft's original

One option is a METAR weather utility with winds aloft and temperatures. Run only one program that writes weather to FS9, or conditions may continually reset.
- Fly procedures rather than shortcuts. Load plausible fuel and payload, check the centre of gravity, use the correct flap and power settings, and practise VOR, NDB and ILS navigation instead of relying on the GPS for every leg. FS9's ATC is simplified, so settings alone cannot turn it into a complete modern air-traffic simulation.
- Improve airports and traffic together. Airline-style AI traffic and schedules make the airspace feel operational, while airport layouts with improved parking and AI flow help those aircraft use suitable gates and taxi routes. Traffic density by itself is not realism; overcrowded ramps and queues are usually less convincing.
- Add visual and sound improvements last. Cloud textures, regional scenery, cockpit lighting and aircraft sounds strengthen the effect, but they cannot correct an inaccurate flight model or an unstable installation.
What realism settings should I use in FS2004?
Start with the flight-model realism sliders at or near their maximum positions, then change only settings required by a particular aircraft's documentation.
- Turn off unlimited fuel and load the amount needed for the route, reserve and expected weather.
- Disable auto-mixture when flying a piston aircraft whose mixture should be managed manually. It has little practical relevance to normal jet operation.

How do I keep FS2004 realistic without ruining performance?
A steady frame rate produces more believable control response and instrument movement than maximum scenery settings with persistent stuttering.
AI traffic, layered weather, dense autogen and complex airports can all compete for FS9's limited resources. Establish a stable baseline, install one change at a time and test at a busy airport in poor weather. If performance drops, reduce AI density or cloud and scenery complexity individually so you can identify the real cause.
Install only add-ons explicitly compatible with Flight Simulator 2004. FSX, Prepar3D and later Microsoft Flight Simulator packages are not automatically interchangeable with FS9, even when their folder structures or aircraft names look familiar.
