Set up TrackIR in FS2004 with the right profile, launch order and cockpit settings, plus fixes for no movement, drift and stutter.
To set up TrackIR in FS2004, install the software, update its supported-games list, select or create an FS2004 profile, centre the camera over your main display, and assign centring and pause hotkeys. Start TrackIR before fs9.exe, load a flight, then switch to the virtual cockpit and centre the view.
FS2004 includes native TrackIR Enhanced support. You normally do not need FSUIPC, a special gauge, an aircraft-specific module or joystick-axis assignments. TrackIR communicates through the simulator's supported-game interface; mouse emulation is only a fallback and provides more limited control.

How do I configure TrackIR for FS2004?
The reliable setup order is hardware and tracking first, profile assignment second, then FS2004.
- Install and test the TrackIR software. Connect the camera and confirm that the software's preview responds to your head before opening FS2004. If it does not, the problem is outside the simulator.
- Refresh the supported-games list. Check that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, sometimes shown with its A Century of Flight name, appears among the recognised titles. Restart the TrackIR software after updating that list.
- Position the camera correctly. Place it above or below the display used for the forward cockpit view, facing the reflector or active clip squarely. With a wide display arrangement, keep it aligned with the screen directly ahead rather than the centre of the entire desktop. - Select the correct tracking clip. Choose the passive reflector or powered clip option that matches the hardware you are wearing. The wrong selection commonly causes reversed, unstable or restricted movement.
- Create an FS2004 profile. Begin with the default profile and associate it with
fs9.exeor the FS2004 title entry. Avoid an aggressive custom response curve until the basic connection works. - Enable the required axes. Yaw and pitch control looking left, right, up and down. X, Y and Z provide sideways, vertical and fore-and-aft movement; roll tilts the viewpoint. FS2004 can use six degrees of freedom, although some older virtual cockpits do not display every movement cleanly.
- Assign centring and pause hotkeys. Choose keys that FS2004 and other utilities are not already using. Sit in your normal flying position before pressing the centring key.
- Use the correct launch order. Start TrackIR, confirm that tracking is active, and then launch
fs9.exe. Load an aircraft and enter its virtual cockpit using the simulator's view controls.
Which TrackIR settings work best in FS2004?
The best FS2004 TrackIR profile starts with moderate movement, modest smoothing and a small stable area around the centre. Tune it for how you fly rather than copying extreme response curves intended for combat simulators.

Set the aircraft's normal FS2004 eyepoint while tracking is paused, then resume TrackIR and centre it. The centring command defines your neutral head position; it does not repair an aircraft whose base viewpoint is incorrectly positioned.
Why does TrackIR track my head but not move FS2004?
If the TrackIR preview moves normally but the FS2004 view remains fixed, the fault is usually the game connection, launch order or selected cockpit view.
- Confirm that tracking is not paused and that the FS2004 title is present in the supported-games list.
- Close both programs, start TrackIR first, and then restart FS2004.
- Switch to the virtual cockpit. A fixed 2D panel does not provide the same translation and cockpit movement as a 3D virtual cockpit.
- Run TrackIR and FS2004 at the same Windows privilege level. If
fs9.exeis set to run as administrator, start TrackIR the same way for testing; otherwise, running both normally is preferable. - Close any other head-tracking or camera-emulation software that may be trying to control the simulator's view.
- Return to a basic TrackIR profile. Mouse emulation and elaborate third-party mappings can obscure whether native support is working.
If the TrackIR preview itself does not move, check the USB connection, camera angle, clip selection and tracking points. Bright sunlight, reflective objects and an unpowered USB hub can all cause intermittent detection.
How do I fix drift, stutter or a view that snaps back?
Drift and snapping usually come from a poor centre position, optical interference or another control changing the view at the same time.
- Drifting centre: sit naturally, keep the reflector visible and centre TrackIR again. Repeated drift can indicate that one tracking point is being lost.
- Jerky movement: remove bright reflections behind you, improve camera alignment and add a little smoothing. If the TrackIR preview is smooth but FS2004 is not, simulator frame pacing is the likely cause.

- Cockpit clipping: reduce translation sensitivity, especially fore-and-aft movement, or disable translation for that aircraft while retaining yaw and pitch.
- Reversed or erratic tracking: verify that the selected reflector or powered-clip mode matches the hardware and that the camera has not been mounted in an unsupported orientation.
