How do I reset FS2004 nosewheel steering controls?
Rebuild the rudder setup around one clean axis, then test before adding any other controller assignments.
- Establish a clean test. Load the default Cessna on a wide paved surface, select calm weather, release the parking brake and taxi slowly. This separates a global control fault from an add-on aircraft problem.
- Inspect the rudder response. Move the pedals or joystick twist through their full range. If the rudder barely moves, remains deflected or flickers while the controller is centred, recalibrate the device in Windows before changing the aircraft.

- Set sensitivity and the null zone. Use enough sensitivity to obtain full rudder travel, then add only enough null zone to stop centre jitter. A large null zone creates a delayed response followed by a sudden turn. If steering works but is simply too sharp, use the nosewheel sensitivity adjustments for pedals and joystick axes.
- Check the brakes. Confirm that both toe-brake axes return fully to zero and are not reversed. A partially applied left or right brake can feel like failed steering or make the aircraft pull continuously.
- Choose the correct rudder method. With pedals or a twist grip, use the hardware rudder axis and normally leave auto-rudder disabled. Without a rudder axis, auto-rudder can provide basic ground steering through aileron input, though it is less precise.

When should I rebuild FS9.cfg?
Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9\FS9.cfg only after ordinary calibration and assignment checks fail across several default aircraft. Close FS2004 first, preserve the original file as a backup, then launch the simulator so it creates a fresh configuration.
This resets more than steering: display, sound and other simulator preferences may also need to be restored. Reassign one controller axis at a time and test after each change; otherwise the original conflict can be added straight back.
What if only one FS2004 aircraft has bad steering?
A one-aircraft failure points to that add-on's aircraft.cfg, flight-dynamics files, panel gauges or intended tiller system rather than FS2004's global controls.
With the simulator closed, back up aircraft.cfg from the aircraft's folder under the FS2004 Aircraft directory. Find the [contact_points] section and compare it with an untouched copy from the add-on package. The nose gear is normally the wheeled contact point positioned forward of the main gear.
Within that contact-point line, the steering-angle field follows the wheel-radius field. A value of zero represents a fixed wheel, while 180 degrees is commonly used for a freely castoring wheel; a conventionally steerable nosewheel normally has a finite angle between those extremes. Do not copy a value from an unrelated aircraft, reorder the comma-separated fields or alter the gear position merely to increase steering authority.

Why does the aircraft turn while the nosewheel stays straight?
If the aircraft follows rudder input correctly but the displayed wheel does not rotate, the steering logic is working and the visual animation is missing or incorrectly linked in the model. Changing controller sensitivity will not repair an animation built into the aircraft model.
Can taxi speed make steering appear broken?
Excessive taxi speed can make a correctly configured nosewheel skid or run wide, especially on a heavy aircraft. Diagnose steering at walking pace, use small inputs and avoid holding full deflection while adding power.
As speed increases, aerodynamic rudder authority becomes more significant, while abrupt nosewheel commands are more likely to scrub the tyre. If the aircraft steers cleanly at low speed but runs wide only during fast turns, reduce taxi speed before changing the configuration.
