Use gamepad triggers as throttle controls in FSX and Steam Edition. Map left/right triggers and fix combined-axis, snap-back and repeat problems.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, use the right trigger for repeating Throttle increase and the left trigger for repeating Throttle decrease. Do not normally bind a spring-loaded gamepad trigger to Throttle axis, because power snaps back when released. If FSX sees both triggers as one axis, map them to held F3/F2 keystrokes instead.
How to map the right trigger and left trigger to throttle
The dependable setup treats each gamepad trigger as a repeating button command, not as a physical throttle lever.
- Enable and select the gamepad. Open Settings > Controls, or Options > Settings > Controls while flying. Confirm that controllers are enabled, then select the correct gamepad in the device list.
- Remove unwanted throttle axes. Check Control Axes for every connected device and delete any duplicate Throttle axis assignment. Keep a genuine throttle-quadrant assignment only if you intend to use that hardware instead of the triggers.
- Assign the right trigger. Under Buttons/Keys, find the throttle-increase command. Its description may include “quickly”, depending on the installation or language. Start a new assignment, pull the right trigger and set the command to repeat while held.
- Assign the left trigger. Bind it to the corresponding throttle-decrease command and use a similar repeat setting.
- Test with automation off. Start at idle with autothrottle disengaged. Hold the right trigger to advance power, release it at the required setting, then hold the left trigger to reduce power.
This is incremental control: the length of time you hold a trigger determines how far the throttle moves. Trigger pressure does not directly represent a precise throttle position.

Why does an Xbox controller left trigger share an axis with the right trigger?
Many Xbox-style controllers expose the left and right triggers to older DirectInput software such as FSX as opposite directions of one combined axis.
In this mode, the unpressed position sits near the centre, one trigger moves the axis one way and the other trigger moves it the opposite way. Pressing both can partially or completely cancel the input. FSX may therefore recognise trigger movement under Control Axes but refuse to accept either trigger separately under Buttons/Keys.

FSX: Steam Edition and Steam Controller triggers
Steam Input can translate Steam Controller or Xbox controller triggers into the held keyboard commands that FSX expects.
- Open the per-game controller layout. Select the layout used specifically for FSX: Steam Edition; the exact Steam client labels can vary.
- Map the right trigger to
F3. Configure the keystroke to remain active while the trigger is held, rather than sending only one brief press. - Map the left trigger to
F2. These are FSX's default increase- and decrease-throttle keys. Use your replacement keys if you changed the defaults. - Remove duplicate inputs. Clear the combined trigger axis and any native trigger assignments in FSX so that one physical input does not send two throttle commands.
An original Steam Controller can expose soft-pull and full-pull trigger stages. Bind only one stage to the repeating throttle command unless you deliberately want the second stage to perform a different action, such as full throttle or throttle cut.
For boxed or DVD FSX, use the controller's mapping software to send held F3 and F2 inputs. If no mapping facility is available and FSX sees only a combined axis, assign two ordinary shoulder buttons instead; FSX cannot split that axis into independent trigger buttons by itself.
Should a gamepad trigger be assigned directly to Throttle axis?
A direct Throttle axis assignment is suitable only when you deliberately want engine power to follow the trigger's spring-loaded position.

Assigning a combined trigger axis directly to throttle often produces roughly mid-power with neither trigger pressed, one trigger increasing power and the other reducing it. That may look logical during calibration, but it makes stable power settings difficult because releasing either trigger returns the axis towards its neutral position.
What should happen when you release the left trigger?
With a button-command setup, releasing the left trigger should stop the throttle movement and leave the virtual lever at its selected position.
If the lever jumps back towards idle, centre or its previous position, the trigger is still acting as an axis or another device is overwriting it. If power continues decreasing after release, check that Steam Input or the controller mapper is sending a held key rather than a toggled or latched command.
At idle, continuing to hold the left trigger may engage reverse thrust on aircraft that support it. Release the trigger as soon as idle is reached if you do not want reverse during taxi.
Why does the trigger throttle jump, move once or ignore presses?
An unwanted axis assignment or incorrectly configured repeat action causes most trigger-throttle failures in FSX.
- Check every connected joystick, quadrant and gamepad for duplicate Throttle axis assignments. FSX stores bindings separately for each device.
- Confirm that the correct controller is selected before editing Buttons/Keys.
- Increase the assignment's repeat rate if one trigger press changes power by only a single small step.
- Test
F2andF3on the keyboard. If they do not work, check whether those default bindings were changed. - Make sure the FSX window has focus when testing keyboard commands sent through Steam Input.
- Disengage autothrottle and test with a default aircraft to separate a controller problem from aircraft-specific automation.
- Do not leave both a native FSX trigger binding and an emulated keyboard binding active for the same trigger.

How do I add idle, full throttle and reverse thrust?
Spare gamepad buttons can provide instant idle and full-power commands alongside the two triggers.
- Throttle cut: assign the FSX throttle-cut command, which uses
F1by default, for an immediate return to idle. - Full throttle: assign the full-throttle command, which uses
F4by default. - Reverse thrust: on aircraft equipped for reverse, hold the decrease command after reaching idle. Press throttle cut to return from reverse to idle.
Reverse is aircraft-dependent; a piston aircraft or another model without reversible thrust will simply remain at idle. Avoid using an excessively fast repeat setting if the left trigger enters reverse before you can release it.
