Set up an Xbox controller in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition: map axes and buttons, tune null zones, and fix gamepads that do not appear or respond.
FSX and FSX: Steam Edition can use an Xbox controller or compatible Xbox-style gamepad. Connect it before launch, verify it in Windows with joy.cpl, select it under Settings > Controls, then assign left-stick aileron and elevator axes, rudder, throttle buttons and trim. Remove duplicate assignments and calibrate null zones before flying.
How do I set up an Xbox controller in FSX?
The reliable method is to make Windows recognise the controller first, then replace FSX’s automatic assignments with a clean, deliberate control map.
- Connect the controller before opening FSX. Use USB, a compatible wireless adaptor or Bluetooth if both the controller and PC support it. Our guide to wired, Bluetooth and wireless-adaptor connections for PC flight simulators covers the connection stage in more detail.
- Test the controller in Windows. Press Windows and R, enter
joy.cpl, select the controller and open its properties. Move both sticks and press every trigger and button. If the controller does not respond here, changing FSX settings will not repair it. - Open the FSX Controls screen. Start FSX, open Settings > Controls, confirm that controllers are enabled and choose the Xbox controller from the controller-type list. Its displayed name varies by controller model, connection method and Windows driver.
- Clear unwanted automatic bindings. Check both the buttons-and-keys and control-axes pages. Delete Xbox assignments you do not intend to use, then inspect every other connected joystick, throttle, wheel or virtual controller for duplicate flight-control axes. A mistake we see constantly is two devices controlling the elevator or throttle at the same time.
- Assign the primary axes. Map left-stick horizontal movement to the aileron axis and left-stick vertical movement to the elevator axis. Choose the analogue axis commands, not the separate digital aileron-left, aileron-right, elevator-up or elevator-down commands.
- Choose a rudder method. Use the triggers only if FSX detects them as one centred axis: left trigger should move yaw in one direction, right trigger in the other, and releasing both must return it to centre. If that does not happen, remove the axis and assign two shoulder buttons to rudder left and right instead.
- Map throttle and essential buttons. Assign two buttons to throttle increase and decrease, then add brakes, elevator trim, landing gear and flaps according to the aircraft you normally fly. FSX may provide a repeat adjustment for button commands; use it if holding a throttle button changes power too slowly.
- Check direction and calibration. If pushing forward raises the nose or moving right produces left roll, select Reverse for that axis only. Set a small null zone where necessary and confirm that full stick movement can still produce full control travel.
- Test with a default light aircraft. Keep the autopilot off, centre the trim and check pitch, roll, yaw, throttle and brakes individually. Test every mapped button before relying on the layout during take-off.
If you are using an Xbox controller and looking for a driver or preset download link, FSX does not require a special controller file. Windows must recognise the hardware, after which assignments are created inside FSX. A downloaded Standard.xml from another computer is not a dependable shortcut because device identities, drivers and existing bindings differ.
What is a practical FSX gamepad layout?
A good FSX gamepad layout keeps pitch, roll, yaw, throttle, brakes and elevator trim within immediate reach while leaving radios and complex cockpit functions on the keyboard and mouse.

Do not normally assign a spring-centred stick as the throttle axis. Releasing it returns the control towards the middle, which can pull the aircraft back towards partial power. Incremental throttle buttons are less precise but far more predictable.
How should I set sensitivity and null zones?
Use the smallest null zone that stops unwanted centre movement and enough sensitivity to reach full control deflection.
- Pitch and roll: Add a little central null zone only if the Windows test panel shows movement while the stick is untouched. A large null zone creates an abrupt jump when the aircraft finally responds.
- Sensitivity: Reduce it gradually if the aircraft is too twitchy, then check that full stick movement still reaches the end of the FSX calibration display. FSX sensitivity is not a sophisticated response-curve editor; setting it extremely low can leave insufficient control authority.
- Rudder: With both triggers released, the rudder must remain centred. A trigger axis that rests at one extreme is unsuitable and should be cleared.
- Auto-rudder: Use FSX’s auto-rudder option when you have no satisfactory yaw control and mainly fly casually. Turn it off when practising manual taxiing or using a properly mapped rudder axis.
A gamepad stick has much less physical travel than a flight joystick. Trim away sustained control pressure rather than trying to hold the thumbstick slightly off-centre for an entire climb or approach.
What if I meant an Xbox-style or Ucom controller?
An Xbox-style controller does not need to be Microsoft-branded, but Windows and FSX must expose it as a standard game controller.
Ucom controllers and other generic pads may appear in joy.cpl under a generic name such as USB gamepad rather than their retail model. FSX may label their controls as numbered buttons and unnamed axes, so move one input at a time and record what it operates. Xbox button letters and trigger behaviour cannot be assumed.
If the pad has analogue and digital modes, choose the analogue mode before launching FSX and keep it unchanged. A digital-only D-pad cannot provide proportional pitch and roll. If the controller does not appear or respond in joy.cpl, it cannot be mapped inside FSX; if it does appear, follow our generic gamepad calibration and assignment guidance.
Why is my Xbox controller not showing in FSX (“ei näy”)?
An Xbox controller that does not appear in FSX is usually disconnected at Windows level, connected after the simulator started, disabled in FSX or being translated by another input layer. The Finnish phrase “ei näy” means “does not show”; the same checks apply.
- Missing from joy.cpl: Reconnect or re-pair the controller and confirm that Windows has identified it. A wireless controller can be powered on while still paired with a different device.
- Visible in Windows but absent from FSX: Close FSX, connect the controller first and restart the simulator. FSX does not always refresh game-controller devices reliably while running.
- Listed but unresponsive: Confirm that controllers are enabled and that the correct device is selected on the relevant Controls page. Axis assignments belong on the control-axes page, not the buttons-and-keys page.
- Aircraft moves without input: Look for duplicate aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle axes on every connected or virtual device. Also check stick drift, trim and any active autopilot before blaming the connection.
- Triggers force full rudder: The triggers are not being presented as a usable centred axis. Delete that rudder-axis assignment and use two digital rudder buttons instead.
- Bindings disappeared after reconnection: Windows may have presented the controller under a different device identity, particularly after changing its connection mode or USB arrangement. Select the newly listed device and recreate the assignments.

Does an FSX controller work without Steam?
Yes. Boxed or DVD FSX reads Windows game controllers directly and does not need Steam or Steam Input.
FSX: Steam Edition can also read an Xbox controller directly, but the simulator itself remains a Steam-managed edition. Steam Input is a separate controller-translation layer; it is not required merely because you own FSX: Steam Edition.
If Steam Input is active and the controller produces duplicate commands, acts like a mouse or appears only as keyboard input, disable its per-game translation for FSX and restart the simulator. Test one input method at a time. Running direct FSX assignments and a translated Steam controller profile together is a common cause of double inputs.
Can I fly every FSX aircraft with an Xbox controller?
An Xbox controller is adequate for default aircraft and casual VFR flying, but complex aircraft still require keyboard and mouse input.
Add-on airliners may use custom controls for autopilot modes, radios and flight-management systems that cannot all fit on a gamepad. FSX also does not provide convenient native aircraft-specific controller profiles, so a layout suited to a light aeroplane may need changing for helicopters or complex jets.

How do I keep a working FSX controller map?
Close FSX normally and back up its active Standard.xml file after the controller works correctly.
Boxed FSX commonly stores it at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX\Controls\Standard.xml. FSX: Steam Edition may use %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX-SE\Controls\Standard.xml, although installations that have coexisted with boxed FSX can use the FSX folder instead. Make a harmless binding change, close FSX and check which file has the newest modification time before copying it.
The backup preserves assignments for that installation and device identity. It may not transfer cleanly to another computer or to the same controller after Windows registers it as a different device.
