To find historical KJFK METAR reports, search an official aviation-weather or climate archive for station KJFK, set the required date and UTC time, and request both METAR and SPECI observations. For flight simulation, select the latest observation at or before your scenario time, then verify the report’s observation timestamp before entering its weather values.
For Aviation & Real-World Flying scenarios, archived observations are useful for reconstructing a past flight. They are not valid weather for planning a real flight taking place now.
Where should you search for old KJFK METARs?
An official aviation-weather archive is usually the best source for raw operational reports, while a national climate archive is often better for older dates or bulk records. Archive interfaces differ, but almost all require the ICAO station identifier, a date range and an output format.

How do you retrieve the correct KJFK report?
- Define the event time. Decide whether you need weather for pushback, take-off, arrival or another point in the flight. These can require different reports.
- Convert that time to UTC. METAR timestamps use UTC and end in
Z. New York uses UTC−5 during standard time and UTC−4 during daylight time, but you must apply the rule in force on the historical date. A late-evening local flight may fall on the following UTC date. - Search for KJFK. Use the four-letter ICAO code, not the IATA code
JFK. Request a window extending at least an hour either side of the target so that routine reports and weather changes are visible. - Include METAR and SPECI. A SPECI is an unscheduled observation issued after a significant change. Filtering only for routine METARs can hide the report that best represents the flight.
- Read the observation time. In
161651Z, the observation was made on the 16th at 16:51 UTC. Use this time rather than the archive’s receipt, filing or download timestamp. - Keep the raw report and archive date. A METAR contains the day but not the month or year, so save that context separately. If a corrected
CORreport exists for the same observation, use the corrected version.
Which METAR should you use for a past flight?
Use the latest observation issued at or before the point in time you are recreating. Selecting the nearest report can accidentally use an observation from after the event, giving the simulated pilot weather information that was not yet available.
- Departure recreation: use the latest KJFK report available before pushback or take-off.
- Arrival recreation: retrieve the report available near the actual arrival time, not the departure report.
- Detailed reconstruction: collect the reports immediately before and after the event to identify changing wind, ceiling or visibility, but do not assume conditions changed at a precise moment unless another record confirms it.
A METAR is an airport surface observation, not a complete route forecast. It does not supply winds aloft, cloud tops, turbulence, icing coverage or conditions between airports.
Why can a historical KJFK METAR appear to be missing?
The commonest causes are an incorrect station code, a UTC date error or a search that excludes SPECI reports. Several other archive details can also mislead:
NILmeans no report was available for that observation slot.- An archive may index a report by receipt time rather than observation time.
- A corrected report may appear beside the original instead of replacing it.
- Local midnight and UTC midnight can place the report on different dates.
- ATIS, TAF and METAR are separate products; finding one does not mean the archive stores the others.
Do not manufacture an observation to fill a genuine gap. Use the previous valid report, record the limitation and inspect the next observation only to understand the trend.
How do you recreate a KJFK METAR in a flight simulator?
Enter the archived values manually when the simulator cannot replay historical weather reliably. Our group-by-group METAR decoding guide explains the complete syntax; the main US reporting conventions are:
- Wind is reported in knots and its direction is relative to true north.
- Visibility is normally expressed in statute miles.
- Cloud bases are reported in hundreds of feet above the aerodrome.
- Temperature and dew point are in Celsius;
Mmarks a negative value. - An altimeter group such as
A2992means 29.92 inches of mercury.
Expect some approximation. A METAR gives cloud amount and base but not cloud tops or an exact three-dimensional cloud structure. Variable visibility, precipitation intensity and gust behaviour may also be represented differently by each simulator’s weather engine.
The report does not identify the runway configuration that KJFK actually used. Combine the wind with the KJFK chart and runway-reference guidance, but treat any runway choice as an informed reconstruction unless you also have a time-matched ATIS or operational record. A modern chart may not reproduce the airport layout from a much older date.
Can archived METARs be used for real flight planning?
No. Historical KJFK METAR reports support research, training and simulation, but they cannot establish the conditions for a flight happening now.
