How do you use KJFK charts in a flight simulator?

- Collect the chart set. Download the airport diagram, assigned departure, arrival and expected approach. Keep an alternative approach available if the runway configuration may change.
- Confirm the runway and procedure. Use the simulator’s weather, ATIS or ATC assignment. Do not choose an approach simply because it produces the shortest route.
- Compare the chart with the simulator. Check that the procedure exists in the FMS or GPS and that its fixes, transitions and restrictions match. A PDF can be newer than the aircraft’s navigation database.
- Mark the taxi clearance. Trace each taxiway in order, identify every runway crossing and note any hold-short point. At a large airport such as KJFK, following the moving-map line without checking signs and clearances is a common cause of wrong turns.

Why does the KJFK chart not match the simulator?

Temporary closures and construction are another source of differences. A chart does not guarantee that a simulator models a real-world closure, and stock ATC may route over taxiways represented differently by the scenery.
