What does each KMCO weather product tell you?

How do you check KMCO weather step by step?

Use the reports in time order, beginning with the forecast and ending with the latest operational information.

  1. Confirm the airport identifier. Enter KMCO, the ICAO code for Orlando International Airport. Do not confuse it with nearby KORL for Orlando Executive or KSFB for Orlando Sanford.
  2. Retrieve the latest METAR or SPECI. Check the observation time ending in Z, which means UTC, rather than assuming the first report shown is fresh. A SPECI is an unscheduled report issued after a qualifying change in conditions.
  3. Read the complete TAF. Check both its issue time and validity group, then follow each FM, TEMPO or probability group in chronological order. The issue time alone does not tell you whether the forecast covers your arrival.
  4. Obtain the applicable ATIS. Use the published voice frequency or supported data-link service close to departure or arrival.   5. Record the ATIS identifier. Note both its time and phonetic identifier, such as Information Alpha. The identifier helps ATC know which broadcast you received, but the time confirms how recent its weather is.   6. Search the observation archive. Select station KMCO, set the required UTC date range and include both METAR and SPECI reports. Florida uses UTC−5 during standard time and UTC−4 during daylight saving time, so take care around midnight UTC.

Why do the METAR, ATIS and simulator weather disagree?

Differences usually come from report age, coverage area, source refresh intervals or simulator settings rather than a faulty report.

  • Observation timing: a METAR may precede a newer ATIS or SPECI by several minutes.
  • Geographic coverage: the METAR describes conditions at the airport sensor while rain or a thunderstorm may sit on an arrival path several miles away.
  • Wind references: METAR wind direction is relative to true north, while runway designators are based on magnetic heading.
  • Simulator processing: live-weather systems may download, interpolate and blend data on their own schedule. Check that live weather is enabled and that the simulator’s date and UTC time are correct.
  • Simulated ATIS: a simulator or multiplayer ATC session may generate ATIS from its own weather state. For that session, use the ATIS heard within the simulated environment rather than assuming a real-world broadcast will match.

A mistake we see constantly is comparing reports without checking their timestamps. Write down the METAR observation time, TAF validity period and ATIS time before deciding that the sources conflict.

How should KMCO weather history be used?

Archived observations are useful for reconstructing a flight and studying seasonal patterns, but they cannot replace a forecast for a future departure.

  • Recreating a past flight: retrieve the METAR and SPECI reports immediately before and after the required UTC time.
  • Studying typical conditions: compare multiple years from the same month and local time rather than relying on one memorable day.
  • Reviewing an operational decision: preserve the exact report text, station identifier and timestamp instead of copying only a decoded summary.

Historical TAFs answer a different question: they show what was forecast at the time, not what actually happened. ATIS recordings are not consistently archived, so archived surface observations are normally the better source for past weather reconstruction.

What matters most for Orlando flight planning?

At KMCO, convection and fast-changing winds can matter more than a single favourable airport observation.

  • A KMCO METAR can report good visibility while a thunderstorm affects a departure corridor or arrival fix.
  • Pay close attention to VCTS, temporary groups and probability groups in the TAF, especially when estimating delay, holding or alternate fuel.
  • Outflow from nearby storms can change the wind and expected runway configuration quickly.
  • Use forecast wind for advance planning, the latest ATIS for the expected operation, and the actual ATC clearance as the final authority for runway assignment.
