How do I host a multiplayer session in FSX?

Ian Stephens
In short

Host an FSX multiplayer session with Steam Edition, LAN or FSHost. Follow the right setup and fix firewall, NAT and add-on compatibility problems.

To host an FSX multiplayer session, use Steam’s built-in lobby in FSX: Steam Edition, a LAN session for boxed FSX PCs on the same network, or an FSHost server for boxed FSX over the internet. The old GameSpy service no longer works, and boxed FSX cannot normally host through it.

Which FSX hosting method should I use?

The right hosting method depends mainly on your FSX edition and whether the other pilots are on your local network or connecting remotely. Our breakdown of the multiplayer routes that still work in FSX covers the broader online and offline options.

How do I host in FSX: Steam Edition?

FSX: Steam Edition should be hosted through its Steam multiplayer connection rather than the retired GameSpy system.

  1. Start Steam in online mode. Confirm that the host and every guest are signed into Steam before opening FSX.
  2. Open Multiplayer. From the FSX opening screen, choose the multiplayer option, select the Steam or internet connection where requested, enter your player name and sign in.
  3. Choose Host a Session. Enter a clear session name and description so your friends can identify it.
  4. Set access controls. Choose the maximum number of players, add a password for a private flight and set the session visibility. Enable late joining or aircraft sharing only if those options are needed.
  5. Configure the flight. Select the session type, starting airport, aircraft, weather and time. For a shared cockpit, enable aircraft sharing and use an aircraft that supports it.
  6. Wait in the lobby. Give the other pilots the exact session name and password, confirm that everyone appears in the briefing room, then start the flight.

How do friends join the Steam session?

Guests should open FSX: Steam Edition, select the same Steam multiplayer connection and find the host’s session in the lobby. A session can disappear from their results when it is private, full, filtered out, already running without late joining, or hosted under a different connection method.

FSX does not send aircraft or scenery add-ons to guests. If somebody lacks the host’s aircraft model, FSX may substitute another model or display it incorrectly. Use a default aircraft for the first connection test, then introduce add-ons after the basic session works.

How do I host with boxed FSX?

Boxed FSX still hosts on a local network, but its original GameSpy internet lobby is defunct.

Hosting boxed FSX on a LAN

  1. Connect every PC to the same network. Avoid guest Wi-Fi, which often prevents devices from communicating with one another.
  2. Allow FSX through the firewall. Permit fsx.exe on private networks on both the host and guest computers.
  3. Select Local Network (LAN). Open Multiplayer, choose the LAN connection, enter a player name and select the option to host a session.
  4. Create and launch the flight. Configure the session, wait for it to appear in the other PCs’ LAN lobby and launch only after everyone has joined.

An address beginning with 192.168., 10. or the private 172. range works only inside the local network. Giving that address to a remote friend will not create an internet connection.

Hosting boxed FSX over the internet

For a remote boxed-FSX group, a dedicated FSHost server is usually cleaner than trying to revive GameSpy. You can get the dedicated FSHost server package from our library; FSX pilots also need the compatible client connector used by that server.

  1. Run the server on the host computer. Set a recognisable session name, player limit and password.
  2. Configure the client connector. Each pilot should use the client component intended for FSX and enter the server address and configured port.
  3. Permit the connection. Add firewall rules for the server and client applications. For internet hosting, forward only the required port or port range to the server computer.
  4. Test locally first. Confirm that another PC can connect over the LAN before testing through the public internet address.

A private virtual LAN is another option because it makes remote computers behave as if they were on the same local network. It suits a small trusted group; FSHost is the better choice when you want a dedicated, repeatable server configuration.

Can boxed FSX and Steam Edition join the same session?

Boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition generally cannot see or join the same built-in multiplayer session. Steam Edition uses Steam networking, while boxed FSX was designed around LAN and the discontinued GameSpy service.

Keep all players on the same edition when possible. Our explanation of the practical networking differences between boxed FSX and Steam Edition helps identify which connection instructions apply.

Why can’t players see or join my FSX session?

Most failed sessions come down to the wrong connection method, firewall filtering, router NAT or mismatched simulator installations.

  • The session never appears: verify that everyone selected the same multiplayer connection, the session is visible and not full, and no lobby filter is hiding it. On a LAN, ensure nobody is using an isolated guest network.
  • The connection times out: allow FSX, Steam or the FSHost client through the firewall as appropriate. Internet hosting can also fail behind double NAT or carrier-grade NAT, where ordinary router port forwarding is insufficient.
  • Steam friends cannot find it: confirm that the host remains in the lobby, Steam is online and the session permits those players to join. Restart Steam and FSX after changing networking settings.
  • Aircraft are missing or wrong: every player needs the same add-on model and livery. Start with default FSX aircraft to separate a networking fault from an add-on mismatch.
  • Shared cockpit is unavailable: enable aircraft sharing and use the same aircraft version on both computers. Some complex add-on gauges do not synchronise correctly even when the basic aircraft can be shared.

What is the best first multiplayer test?

The best first test is a password-protected two-player session using default aircraft, a default airport and simple weather. Do not begin with shared cockpit, custom scenery or a complex airliner; once both players can taxi and see each other reliably, add those elements one at a time.
