Install aircraft panels and sound packs in FS2004 correctly, with folder paths, aircraft.cfg setup, backups, aliases and fixes for silent audio.
To install aircraft panels and sound packs in FS2004 (FS9), place each package in the target aircraft’s folder, keep panel files in panel and audio files in sound, then copy any supplied gauges to FS2004’s Gauges folder. Back up the originals and follow the package readme before overwriting anything.
Before installing the panel or sound pack
Close FS2004 and extract the downloaded archive to a temporary folder. Do not install directly from the ZIP file. Confirm that the package was made for FS2004; panels and gauges intended for FSX or Prepar3D are not automatically compatible with FS9.
Find the main FS2004 directory containing FS9.exe. Aircraft-specific files go under Aircraft, while shared gauges normally go under the main Gauges folder. Our explanation of the FS2004 add-on folder structure covers packages that also include effects, modules or other supporting files.
Make a backup of the target aircraft folder, particularly its existing panel, sound and aircraft.cfg files. A mistake we see constantly is an extra nested folder: FS2004 needs panel.cfg directly inside panel, not inside panel\panel. The same applies to sound.cfg.
How do I install the panel and sound files?
- Inspect the extracted package. Look for folders named
panel,sound,Gaugesor similarly named variants. Read the included instructions because some packages use aliases or require extra files. - Identify the target aircraft. Open FS2004’s
Aircraftfolder and select the aircraft folder containing itsaircraft.cfg, model, texture, panel and sound folders. Do not install a panel or sound folder as a separate aircraft. - Install the panel. For a complete replacement, copy the package’s panel contents into the aircraft’s existing
panelfolder after backing it up. The finished path must resembleAircraft\TargetAircraft\panel\panel.cfg. - Install the gauges. Copy supplied shared gauge files, gauge folders or CAB archives to FS2004’s main
Gaugesfolder when the readme directs you to do so. Keep CAB archives intact unless the developer specifically says to unpack them, and do not overwrite existing shared gauges without a backup. - Install the sound pack. Copy the supplied
sound.cfgand WAV files into the aircraft’ssoundfolder. The expected path isAircraft\TargetAircraft\sound\sound.cfg. Use a pack designed for that aircraft and engine type because its configuration refers to particular recordings and operating ranges. - Test one change at a time. Start FS2004, load the aircraft and check its 2D panel, virtual cockpit, engine start, idle, power changes and internal and external audio. Installing the panel first and the sound pack second makes faults much easier to isolate.

Should I replace the default folders or create variants?
Replace the default folders when every livery should use the new panel or sounds; create suffixed folders when only selected aircraft entries should use them.

Can I use a panel or sound pack on only one livery?
Yes. Create a suffixed folder such as panel.custom or sound.custom, then edit only that livery’s [fltsim.x] entry in aircraft.cfg. The value after the equals sign is the suffix, not the complete folder name.
Why does the new FS2004 panel not appear?
A panel usually fails to appear because FS2004 is reading a different folder or cannot load its gauges.
- Check that
panel.cfgis directly inside the selected panel folder. - Match the
panel=value inaircraft.cfgto the folder suffix. For example,panel=customselectspanel.custom. - Check any alias path against the actual aircraft folder name under
Aircraft. - If the background appears but instruments are blank, install the supplied gauges in the location specified by the package. Missing or incompatible gauges commonly cause black spaces.
- Remember that a 2D panel replacement does not necessarily alter the aircraft’s 3D virtual cockpit.
If edited files appear to revert, FS2004 may be installed in a protected Windows directory. Check write permissions and ensure that Windows has not redirected edited configuration files to its VirtualStore location.
Why is the new sound pack silent or unchanged?
Silent or unchanged audio normally means FS2004 is loading another sound folder, the configuration references missing WAV files, or the pack does not match the aircraft.
- Confirm that
sound.cfgand the WAV files are together in the active sound folder. - Check the aircraft’s
sound=setting. A value such assound=customloadssound.custom, not the defaultsoundfolder. - Open
sound.cfgin a text editor and verify that the referenced WAV filenames exist. Do not rename files arbitrarily; change names only when correcting a clear mismatch. - Check internal and external views. FS2004 sound configurations can define separate cockpit and outside recordings.
- Test the default aircraft sounds. If every aircraft is silent, the fault is in FS2004 or Windows audio rather than the newly installed pack.
