Where do I install Better Mouse Yoke?

The supplied Better Mouse Yoke folder belongs directly under Resources/plugins inside the main X-Plane 12 installation.

  1. Close X-Plane 12. Plug-ins should not be replaced while the simulator is running.
  2. Extract the download. Do not place the ZIP archive itself in X-Plane.
  3. Find the actual plug-in folder. It should contain the supplied platform binary and any supporting files or folders. Keep that structure intact.
  4. Copy the folder into X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins. Avoid an accidental double folder such as BetterMouseYoke/BetterMouseYoke.
  5. Remove an older copy first when upgrading. Merging old and new files can leave incompatible binaries or configuration data behind.
  6. Start X-Plane and check the Plugins menu or Plugin Admin for Better Mouse Yoke.

Use a release explicitly built for X-Plane 12 and your operating system. A package containing only a Windows plug-in binary will not load on macOS or Linux, and an older X-Plane 11 build is not guaranteed to work in X-Plane 12.

How should I configure Better Mouse Yoke?

A stable configuration makes Better Mouse Yoke the only source controlling pitch and roll while allowing separate throttle, rudder and brake hardware to remain assigned.

  1. Check hardware assignments. Open X-Plane's joystick settings and remove pitch or roll assignments from any unused or noisy controller. Do not clear throttle, mixture, propeller, yaw or brake axes that you still need.
  2. Open the plug-in controls. Look under the Plugins menu for Better Mouse Yoke. If your release has no separate settings window, search X-Plane's keyboard and joystick command lists for commands registered under the plug-in's name.
  3. Assign activation and release commands. Choose a convenient keyboard key or mouse button that does not also operate free-look, cockpit interaction or the standard X-Plane mouse yoke.
  4. Start with restrained response. Use conservative pitch and roll sensitivity, the smallest dead zone that prevents drift, and modest smoothing if those controls are available in your build.
  5. Test in a simple aircraft. Use a default light aircraft in level flight, trim it properly, and make small changes one setting at a time.

Why is Better Mouse Yoke not working?

Most Better Mouse Yoke failures are caused by an incorrectly nested folder, an incompatible plug-in binary or another device sending pitch and roll input.

  • It is missing from the Plugins menu: inspect Log.txt in the X-Plane 12 root after closing the simulator. Search for the plug-in name and messages such as a failed load or missing library. Confirm that the folder is not nested twice and that the package supports your operating system.
  • It appears but does not move the controls: enable it in Plugin Admin, activate its mouse-control mode, and verify that the chosen command is assigned only once.
  • The aircraft twitches or fights the mouse: another joystick, gamepad or virtual controller probably still owns the pitch or roll axis.   • The camera moves instead: the activation button is also assigned to free-look or cockpit panning. Bind the plug-in to a different button or use its toggle command if one is provided.
  • Settings are not retained: make sure the X-Plane folder and the plug-in's configuration location are writable, then exit X-Plane normally so the settings can be saved.

Never fix a missing-library error by downloading an arbitrary DLL or other binary. Install only dependencies named in the Better Mouse Yoke package documentation.

Can I keep using a throttle or rudder pedals?

Yes. Better Mouse Yoke can handle pitch and roll while physical hardware controls the throttle, propeller, mixture, rudder, toe brakes and other functions.
