Should I install FSX on an SSD or HDD?

Install FSX or FSX: Steam Edition on an SSD if you have space. It shortens simulator, flight and scenery loading, and can reduce pauses caused by texture or scenery reads. It will not usually raise average frame rates much, because FSX is primarily limited by CPU performance. An HDD remains usable.

Will an SSD increase FSX frame rates?

An SSD generally improves loading and responsiveness rather than sustained FPS. FSX relies heavily on processor performance, so replacing an HDD with an SSD will not remove frame-rate drops caused by dense autogen, AI traffic, complex clouds or demanding aircraft systems.

Which drive should hold FSX add-ons?

For the simplest and most reliable setup, keep FSX and its actively used add-ons on the same SSD. Aircraft, gauges, effects and modules often depend on folders inside the FSX installation directory, while older installers may obtain that directory from the Windows registry.

If SSD capacity is limited, use this order of priority:

  • SSD: FSX itself, frequently flown aircraft and detailed airports or scenery used on most flights.
  • HDD: downloaded installers, backups, screenshots and add-ons that are not installed.
  • Either drive: large photo scenery that can be registered from another location, provided you accept slower loading from an HDD.

External scenery can be stored outside the main FSX folder and added through the Scenery Library, but some packages also install effects, modules or shared textures into FSX. Follow the add-on's installer rather than moving individual folders afterwards. Also remember that two drive letters can be partitions on the same physical disk; partitioning an HDD does not give it SSD performance.

How do I install FSX on an SSD safely?

  1. Allow for add-ons, not just base FSX. Detailed airports, terrain and photo scenery can consume far more storage than the simulator. Leave free space for temporary installation files and future additions rather than filling the SSD nearly to capacity.
  2. Choose the SSD during installation. Boxed FSX can use a short custom location such as D:\FSX, which may also avoid permissions trouble with legacy add-ons.   3. Install updates and add-ons against the final location. This ensures installers, registry entries and configuration files all point to the correct folder.
  4. Do not drag an existing installation to the SSD. A manual folder move can break shortcuts, registry paths, scenery entries and add-on activation. Is an NVMe SSD better than a SATA SSD for FSX?

Either type is a good home for FSX, but NVMe usually offers a smaller practical advantage over a SATA SSD than the specifications suggest. FSX is an older application whose loading is also constrained by CPU work, file processing and add-on complexity. Capacity is normally more valuable than buying the fastest SSD solely for FSX.

If choosing between a small high-end NVMe drive and a larger SATA SSD, we would normally choose the larger SSD so the simulator and active scenery can remain together.

When does installing FSX on an HDD make sense?

An HDD is reasonable when SSD space is unavailable, you use few complex add-ons, or storage capacity matters more than loading speed. FSX will still run from a healthy HDD; expect longer start-up and flight-loading times, with a greater chance of storage-related pauses in dense scenery.

If Windows is already on an SSD but FSX is on an HDD, moving FSX to the SSD provides the most direct improvement to simulator loading. Keep the HDD for archives and backups rather than expecting it to deliver the same scenery-loading behaviour.
