How do I install FSX Acceleration on a modern PC?

Which FSX editions accept the Acceleration expansion?

FSX Acceleration installs only over the original boxed Standard or Deluxe editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

A mistake we see constantly is mixing retail-boxed updates with FSX: Steam Edition. Boxed service packs and the Acceleration disc must not be run over Steam Edition, even if both installations are on the same computer. Can I download FSX Acceleration or use a crack?

There is no legitimate free FSX Acceleration download, crack or freely distributable product key. The standalone expansion was supplied as a commercial boxed product, and Fly Away Simulation does not distribute its installer or licence keys.

If you own boxed FSX, use the original Acceleration disc and its matching key. A product key by itself is not an installer. If you want a downloadable FSX installation instead of dealing with old optical media, FSX: Steam Edition is the complete digital edition; do not attempt to add the boxed Acceleration pack to it.

A cracked executable or key generator does more than bypass licensing. It replaces core simulator files, can leave FSX at an inconsistent service-pack level, may break add-ons that check the simulator version and is a common route for malware. It also makes meaningful troubleshooting almost impossible because the installed files no longer match a legitimate FSX release.

Which FSX Acceleration product key should I use?

Use the key supplied specifically with your Acceleration media, not the base FSX Standard or Deluxe key. Gold Edition packages normally identify the base-simulator and Acceleration keys separately.

The precise location varies by release, but check the disc case, packaging and printed inserts. We cannot generate, share or reconstruct a lost key. With a used copy, possession of the disc does not guarantee that a valid matching licence key was included or remains usable.

Do I install FSX SP1 or SP2 before Acceleration?

A clean boxed FSX installation does not require a separate SP1 or SP2 download before Acceleration because the expansion incorporates the relevant service-pack changes.

• Clean boxed FSX: Install Acceleration directly after activating, launching and closing the base simulator.
• SP1 already installed: Leave it installed, run FSX once, close it and continue with Acceleration.
• Standalone SP2 installed: Remove the separately listed SP2 update through Windows Settings or Programs and Features, confirm that base FSX still launches, then install Acceleration.
• After Acceleration: Do not install standalone SP1 or SP2. Acceleration is the alternative update path and already leaves the simulator with the later code.

How do I install FSX Acceleration on Windows 10 or 11?

The dependable method is to establish a working, activated boxed FSX installation before allowing Acceleration to update its core files.

1. Back up any modified FSX files. Preserve manually edited aircraft, scenery configuration and other customised files. For the cleanest result, disable or remove old modules that replace core simulator components until installation is complete.
2. Install boxed FSX in its final location. On a fresh Windows 10 or 11 installation, a short custom path such as C:\FSX or D:\FSX avoids many permissions problems associated with protected Windows folders. Do not manually drag an existing FSX folder to another drive because the installer relies on its registered location.
3. Activate and initialise base FSX. Enter the base simulator key when prompted, launch the boxed edition as administrator, load a simple default Free Flight session and exit normally. This verifies the installation and creates the per-user configuration files that Acceleration expects.
4. Check the update state. An existing SP1 installation is acceptable, but remove standalone SP2 before proceeding. Confirm that FSX still opens afterwards.
5. Start the Acceleration installer as administrator. Open the genuine disc in File Explorer, right-click its setup program, normally setup.exe, and select Run as administrator.
6. Let setup detect the FSX folder. Acceleration must attach to the registered boxed FSX installation. It cannot be installed as a separate simulator or placed independently on another drive. 7. Accept genuine legacy prerequisites. Windows 10 and 11 contain newer graphics components but may not have every older DirectX component used by FSX. Allow prerequisites supplied by the original installer or requested by Windows to complete.
8. Enter the Acceleration key. Use the key labelled for the expansion rather than repeating the base FSX key. Activation may be requested during installation or when FSX is next launched.
9. Restart and test FSX without add-ons. Launch the boxed simulator and load a default flight. The F/A-18 and EH-101 appearing in the aircraft selection list are straightforward checks that Acceleration content is installed.

Do not enable Windows XP compatibility mode automatically. Running the installer as administrator is the sensible first measure; compatibility settings are reserved for cases where a verified original installer will not start normally.

What if FSX Acceleration setup cannot continue?

First confirm that boxed FSX launches successfully and that setup is not trying to update Steam Edition, a manually moved folder or an incomplete previous installation.

• FSX is not detected: Launch and close the boxed base simulator. If its folder was moved manually or its Windows installation records are missing, repair or reinstall the base edition rather than pointing Acceleration at an arbitrary folder.
• The disc stalls or reports read errors: Copy the entire Acceleration disc to a temporary local folder and run the copied setup program as administrator. If Windows cannot copy the disc, the optical media or drive is the likely cause.
• Setup rolls back: Restart Windows, remove any incomplete Acceleration entry shown in the installed-apps list, verify that base FSX still works and retry before restoring add-ons.
• The key is rejected: Check that it is the Acceleration key from the same boxed package, not the base FSX key or a key found online. Do not replace the executable with a crack.
• Installation succeeds but content is missing: Check whether both boxed FSX and Steam Edition are installed. The Acceleration installer may have updated the boxed copy while your shortcut opens a different installation.

What should I check after installing Acceleration?

A successful installation should launch normally, show the Acceleration aircraft and run a default flight before any third-party add-ons are restored.

Acceleration updates core FSX components to the later service-pack code level. Very old gauges, modules and aircraft built specifically for the original pre-service-pack release may therefore require compatible updates. Reintroduce add-ons in small groups so that a failing module is easy to identify rather than mistaken for a bad Acceleration installation.
