Install and use Ultimate Traffic in FS2004: choose the FS9 path, compile schedules, prevent duplicate traffic and fix missing AI aircraft.
To install Ultimate Traffic in FS2004, run the original FS9-compatible installer and select the folder containing fs9.exe, then open the Ultimate Traffic utility and compile its schedules. In FS2004, raise Airline traffic density above zero and disable competing traffic BGLs if they create duplicates.
Which Ultimate Traffic release works with FS2004?
Use only an Ultimate Traffic edition whose installer explicitly supports Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 or FS9. Ultimate Traffic 2 and Ultimate Traffic Live are different products intended for later simulators and cannot supply traffic to FS2004.
If the installer offers more than one simulator, select FS2004. Install the base product before applying any matching update, and do not mix patches from disc, download or later product editions unless their documentation identifies your exact release.
How do I install Ultimate Traffic in FS2004?
- Run FS2004 once: Start FS9, reach the main menu and close it. This confirms that the simulator works and gives legacy installers a better chance of finding its registered location.
- Back up the affected folders: Copy
AircraftandScenery\World\scenery, or at least any existing traffic BGL files in the latter folder. Ultimate Traffic adds AI aircraft and compiled schedules to these areas. - Run the original installer: If it does not detect FS2004, point it to the root folder containing
fs9.exe—not toAircraft,Addon SceneryorModules. Where the installer requests a separate location for its management utility, leave that separate from the simulator unless its instructions say otherwise. - Deal with protected folders: On Windows installations where FS2004 sits under
Program Files, run the verified installer and compiler with sufficient permission to write into the FS9 directory. A permissions problem often produces a successful-looking compilation without an updated traffic file. Our FS2004 compatibility guidance for Windows 10 and 11 covers the wider folder and permissions issues. - Open the Ultimate Traffic utility: Confirm that its simulator path ends at the correct FS2004 root folder. Keep the supplied aircraft assignments and schedule options for the first test rather than changing several variables at once.
- Compile the schedules: Use the utility's Compile function and select FS2004 as the target if prompted. Let the operation finish; FS2004 reads the resulting traffic BGL rather than the utility's source database.
- Enable traffic in FS2004: Open the simulator's Traffic settings and move Airline traffic density above zero. Around half scale is a useful installation test. Load a major airport at a busy daytime period and allow the simulator a short time to populate its gates.
How do I use Ultimate Traffic after installation?
Ultimate Traffic is primarily an offline schedule and aircraft-assignment utility; it does not need to remain open while FS2004 is running. Make the required selection or assignment in the utility, compile again, close the utility and then start FS2004.
- Traffic density: FS2004's Airline traffic density slider decides how much of the compiled airline schedule appears. General aviation density is separate and does not control Ultimate Traffic's airline flights.
- Schedule changes: Recompile whenever you change enabled schedules, airline selections or aircraft assignments. Altering the utility's database without compiling will not change the simulator.
- Aircraft assignments: Avoid editing the
title=lines in an installed AI aircraft'saircraft.cfg. Compiled plans and assignments depend on those titles matching exactly. - Airport parking: Airport scenery must contain enough suitably sized parking spaces. A complete schedule cannot force an aircraft to appear when the airport has nowhere valid to park it.
FS2004 AI traffic relies on aircraft folders, flight plans and traffic BGLs working together. Our explanation of how those FS2004 AI components fit together is useful when checking an installation manually.
How do I prevent duplicate Ultimate Traffic aircraft?
Keep only one active schedule source for each service wherever possible. Ultimate Traffic can coexist with other AI packages, but two traffic BGLs covering the same airline and route will produce duplicate aircraft, callsigns and departures.
FS2004's default airline schedules are normally stored in traffic030528.bgl under Scenery\World\scenery. Back up that file and disable it if you want Ultimate Traffic to replace the default airlines; our safe procedure for disabling FS2004's default traffic explains the options. Do not remove the aircraft folders themselves merely to stop schedules, because other active plans may still reference them.
Why is Ultimate Traffic not showing in FS2004?
Missing Ultimate Traffic aircraft usually indicate a zero traffic setting, an unsuccessful compilation, an incorrect FS9 path or airport parking limitations.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No airline traffic anywhere | Density is zero, compilation targeted another FS9 installation, or the compiler could not write its BGL | Raise Airline traffic density, verify the path to fs9.exe and check that a traffic BGL in Scenery\World\scenery received a new modification date |
| Traffic appears only at some airports | No scheduled flight matches the location, time or selected density level | Test at a large airport, try a different time and temporarily increase airline density |
| Some aircraft types are absent | An aircraft folder is missing or its title= entry no longer matches the assignment | Restore the original AI aircraft configuration or reinstall that component |
| Aircraft are white or untextured | A texture folder, repaint entry or model reference is missing | Restore the supplied texture and configuration files; recompiling schedules alone will not repair liveries |
| Aircraft disappear or fail to park | The airport lacks enough compatible gates or has unsuitable airport facility data | Reduce traffic density or correct the airport's parking sizes and airline codes |
| Frame rate drops sharply | Too many AI aircraft are active for the system and airport | Lower Airline traffic density before reducing unrelated display settings |

Will Ultimate Traffic show present-day airline schedules?
No. The supplied schedules, operators and liveries represent the period covered by that Ultimate Traffic release. Recompiling changes how its installed data is used; it does not convert historical airlines or routes into present-day operations.
Only import schedules or aircraft assignments specifically made for the same FS2004 Ultimate Traffic edition. Files intended for Ultimate Traffic 2, Ultimate Traffic Live or another simulator may use incompatible databases, aircraft references or traffic formats.
