Fix missing FSX jetways after airport scenery installation by checking display settings, BGL and texture files, library order and scenery conflicts.
Jetways usually go missing after installing airport scenery in FSX because the scenery’s object BGL or textures were not installed, its library entry is inactive or below a conflicting airport, or Scenery Complexity is too low. Ctrl+J cannot create a missing model; it only operates a compatible jetway already placed at the stand.
What does the missing jetway symptom mean?
The exact symptom usually reveals whether FSX has an activation, file, display or animation problem.
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| The entire custom terminal is absent | Inactive scenery entry, incorrect folder path or installation into the wrong FSX copy |
| Custom buildings appear, but every jetway is absent | Scenery Complexity is too low, the object BGL is missing, or the scenery does not include jetways |
| Only part of each jetway appears, or it is transparent or untextured | Missing local or shared texture files, sometimes combined with incompatible DirectX 10 Preview materials |
| Jetways are visible but Ctrl+J does nothing | Static models, disabled Advanced Animations or incorrect aircraft positioning |
| Jetways disappear at particular viewing angles | A scenery-object culling or bounding-box fault |
| Default and add-on structures overlap | Duplicate airport or AFCAD files are active |
How do I restore missing jetways in FSX?
Restore them by confirming the scenery is active, raising object detail, checking the supplied BGL and texture files, then removing airport conflicts.
- Confirm that the airport add-on is loading. Look for its distinctive terminal, taxiway layout or other advertised changes. If everything remains completely default, check that the Scenery Library entry is enabled and points to the folder directly above its
SceneryandTexturesubfolders. If the entry itself has vanished, follow our procedure for restoring an FSX Scenery Library entry first. - Raise the relevant display settings. Set Scenery Complexity temporarily to Very Dense or Extremely Dense and enable Advanced Animations. If an older add-on shows transparent or incomplete jetways only with DirectX 10 Preview enabled, disable that preview option, restart FSX and test again.
- Check the complete file set. Airport and object files ending in
.bglnormally belong in the active area’sSceneryfolder, while its local textures belong in the siblingTexturefolder. Some packages supply the airport layout, jetway object BGL and shared textures separately; the installation notes for this Henri Coandă scenery illustrate that arrangement. Copy files intoScenery\Global\Textureonly when the package instructions explicitly require it. - Verify the simulator and destination. Install the FSX version of the scenery, not an FS2004- or Prepar3D-only build. On a system containing boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, an installer may select the wrong root folder; Steam scenery must ultimately be available to the FSX installation inside that Steam library’s
steamapps\common\FSXfolder. - Remove duplicate airport files. Place the specific airport above broad regional or global scenery in the Scenery Library. Temporarily disable other add-on AFCAD or airport packages for the same ICAO code one at a time. Do not delete or modify FSX’s stock airport BGL files as a first fix.
- Restart and retest. Close FSX after changing BGL files, textures, library priority or DirectX settings. Reload the same gate in daylight so shadows and darkness do not disguise the result.
Why does Ctrl+J not bring the jetway back?
Ctrl+J cannot make an absent jetway appear; it only calls an animated jetway that the airport designer placed at that parking position.
Once the model is visible, the aircraft must be positioned at the appropriate gate, Advanced Animations must be enabled, and the bridge must be an FSX-compatible animated object rather than static scenery. Our focused guide covers the remaining FSX jetway visibility and Ctrl+J checks. If the bridge moves but connects to the wrong part of the aircraft, its door or exit-position data may be the next issue.
Can airport scenery be installed correctly but contain no jetways?
Yes. An airport layout or AFCAD package may update runways, taxiways, parking positions and AI routing without supplying any three-dimensional jetway objects.
Some custom airports also exclude the default terminal and bridges, then replace them with static structures or remote stands. Compare the package description, screenshots and readme with what appears in FSX. If the package only promises revised parking or an updated airport layout, the lack of animated jetways is not an installation fault.
Why do jetways disappear only from some camera angles?
Jetways that return when the viewpoint moves are usually affected by an object-culling fault inside that particular scenery package.
Moving or rotating the camera may provide a temporary workaround, as shown by this documented Heathrow Terminal 5 camera-angle issue. Reinstalling the same files rarely cures this behaviour; a corrected object BGL is normally required.
When should I reinstall the airport scenery?
Reinstall only after the display, activation and conflict checks show that supplied files are missing or were sent to the wrong simulator folder.
- Extract a fresh copy while preserving the package’s original folder structure.
- Select the FSX-specific installation option where variants are supplied.
- Compare the installed files with the readme, paying particular attention to separate object BGL and texture instructions.
- Keep backups of any files you disable while testing duplicate airport scenery.
Reinstalling FSX itself is not a proportionate first response to missing jetways, and replacing stock scenery files can turn one airport problem into a simulator-wide one.
