What is a virtual airline, and how do I join one in MSFS 2024?
Learn what a virtual airline is, how to join one in MSFS 2024, and what PC, Xbox and PS5 pilots must check before logging their first flight.
A virtual airline (VA) is an independent community that organises simulated airline operations in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. To join one, choose a group that explicitly supports your simulator and platform, register, follow its induction rules, then fly an assigned or scheduled route and submit the result through its tracker or manual pilot-report system.
What does a virtual airline do in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
A virtual airline gives sim pilots airline-style structure; it does not install an airline or unlock an MSFS game mode. Each VA sets its own level of realism, from relaxed operations with free aircraft choice to tightly managed schedules modelled on commercial flying.
- Published routes, hubs, timetables and flight numbers
- A defined fleet, sometimes with aircraft or routes unlocked by rank
- Group flights, tours, awards and training
- Operating procedures covering callsigns, fuel, time acceleration and assistance settings
- Records of flight hours, performance and completed sectors
A completed flight is normally recorded as a PIREP, meaning pilot report. Some VAs accept a form completed after landing. Others require an ACARS-style Windows application that reads simulator telemetry such as aircraft type, departure, arrival, block time and landing data. This companion application is separate from the ACARS equipment represented in an airliner's cockpit.
Virtual airlines may be fictional or inspired by real airlines. Unless a group explicitly proves otherwise, treat it as an unofficial fan organisation rather than an employer, training provider or representative of the real carrier. Our broader guide to VA structures, ranks and route systems explains how these communities developed and operate.
How should I choose an MSFS virtual airline?
The right MSFS virtual airline is one whose reporting method works on your platform and whose rules fit your available time, aircraft and preferred level of realism.
| VA style | Choose it when | Check before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Casual or free-flight | You want flexible routes, aircraft substitutions and fewer procedural checks | Minimum activity, manual PIREP support and which flights earn credit |
| Scheduled airline | You enjoy published routes, hubs, fleet progression and virtual ranks | Aircraft restrictions, route booking rules and whether schedules must be flown at set times |
| Procedure-focused | You want check flights, detailed operating procedures or organised online ATC events | Training commitment, voice requirements, approved aircraft and mandatory networks |
- Exact simulator support: “MSFS compatible” can mean MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 or both. Look for an explicit MSFS 2024 statement covering the VA's tracker, aircraft profiles and required liveries.
- Platform support: Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 do not have the same access to external applications and files. Console pilots need a documented console reporting method.
- Real activity: A large membership total does not prove that a VA is active. Look for dated accepted PIREPs, staffed events and evidence that membership questions receive answers.
- Routes you will actually fly: A huge route map is of little use if your preferred routes or aircraft are locked behind ranks that take months of regular flying to reach.
- Workload: Check minimum monthly sectors, inactivity rules, check-flight deadlines, time-zone coverage and what happens if MSFS crashes during a flight.
- Software and privacy: Understand what the tracker records and install only the client supplied through the VA's own membership system. A VA does not need your Microsoft account password or simulator login credentials.
Before registering, use our criteria for comparing virtual airlines by activity, aircraft, rules and simulator support. The recurring mistake we see is choosing by airline name or fleet size before checking the reporting requirements.
How do I join a virtual airline in MSFS 2024?
Joining normally involves creating a membership account, satisfying any induction requirement and successfully recording a first flight.
- Shortlist a compatible VA. Match its routes, fleet, realism level and activity requirement to the flying you can sustain. Check any age, voice communication or online-network rules before applying.
- Verify MSFS 2024 and platform support. Confirm that the reporting client supports Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 rather than assuming MSFS 2020 compatibility carries over. On Xbox or PS5, obtain a clear explanation of how console flights are accepted.
- Read the pilot rules. Pay particular attention to flight booking, aircraft substitutions, callsign format, starting position, assistance settings, time acceleration and the VA's definitions of block start and block end.
- Create the membership account. Use a separate password and provide only the information required to operate the account. Some groups approve applications manually or impose a deadline for the first PIREP.
- Configure the reporting method. Windows pilots may need an ACARS-style client connected to MSFS through simulator telemetry. Confirm that it detects the loaded aircraft and departure airport before the aircraft moves. Manual reporters should learn what evidence and time fields the VA expects.
- Book or accept the first flight. Copy the exact departure and arrival ICAO codes, flight number, callsign and approved aircraft variant. Complete any induction or check flight instead of substituting an easier route without permission.
- Fly and submit the PIREP. Start recording before pushback or other block movement, keep it running throughout the flight, and finish only after reaching the required parking or shutdown state. Review the logged airports, aircraft and times before submission.
Not every VA uses every step. A relaxed group may approve an account and accept a manual report immediately, while a procedure-focused airline may require training, a knowledge check or an observed flight.
Is a virtual airline built into MSFS 2024?
No; virtual airlines operate independently of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and are separate from its Career Mode, achievements and progression.
You normally arrange the flight through the VA's membership system, load or create the route in MSFS 2024, run the required reporting method and submit the result outside the simulator. Joining a VA does not add an airline menu, alter Career Mode credits or automatically display fellow members as traffic.
Built-in multiplayer is optional unless the VA requires it for events. Pilots can also use these ways to find MSFS 2024 multiplayer sessions without an existing friends list; membership in a virtual airline is not required.
Can Xbox and PlayStation 5 pilots join a virtual airline?
Yes, Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro pilots can join a virtual airline if it accepts manual PIREPs or provides another reporting method specifically documented for consoles.
| MSFS 2024 platform | Typical reporting option | Main compatibility check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | ACARS-style tracking client or manual PIREP | The client must explicitly support MSFS 2024 and recognise the chosen aircraft |
| Xbox Series X|S | Manual PIREP or a VA-defined console method | A Windows tracking executable cannot be installed on the console |
| PS5 or PS5 Pro | Manual PIREP or a VA-defined console method | Required PC clients and PC-only aircraft files will not work on PS5 |
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on PS5 and PS5 Pro as well as PC and Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released for PlayStation, so a VA page referring only to “PlayStation MSFS” should identify MSFS 2024.
If you have a PS5, ask whether manual reports are accepted, how flights are verified and whether required aircraft or liveries are available on your platform. Cross-platform multiplayer does not make a Windows-only tracker console-compatible.
Do I need multiplayer, live ATC or paid add-ons?
No universal requirement exists; each virtual airline decides whether multiplayer, an online ATC network, particular aircraft or paid add-ons are mandatory.
Many casual VAs permit offline flights using aircraft included with MSFS 2024. More procedural groups may require online ATC for events, qualifications or selected routes. Check whether a listed aircraft is genuinely mandatory or whether the simulator's included version and a substitute livery are accepted before spending money.
If you mainly want social group flights without schedules, ranks or airline reporting, read how a virtual flying club differs from a structured VA. A club is often the better fit when companionship matters more than accumulating airline hours.
Why is my PIREP rejected or the tracker not recording?
PIREP failures usually come from a mismatch between the assignment, tracker and VA rules rather than from a firm landing alone.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The tracker shows no simulator or aircraft connection | The flight is not fully loaded, the client does not support MSFS 2024, or the aircraft profile is unknown | Do not move. Follow the VA's stated launch order and confirm that the client displays the aircraft and airport first. |
| The wrong flight or aircraft is logged | The flight number, ICAO code or aircraft variant differs from the booked sector | Compare every assignment field before starting. Ask the VA to map an unrecognised add-on variant rather than falsifying the aircraft type. |
| Departure is missing | Recording began after pushback, taxi or take-off | Reset the flight if required and begin recording before the VA's defined block-start point. |
| Arrival is missing | The client was closed or MSFS returned to the menu before the arrival state was detected | Remain parked until the required parking brake, engine or shutdown state has registered. |
| The report is automatically rejected | Slew, teleportation, prohibited time acceleration, an unapproved route or assistance setting was detected | Read the scoring rules before flying and disable features the VA prohibits. |
| The log ends after a disconnect or simulator crash | The tracker lost telemetry or MSFS stopped unexpectedly | Keep the unedited log and use the VA's recovery or manual-report procedure. Do not alter recorded data to make the flight appear complete. |
For a first PIREP, use a short approved route and an aircraft you already know. Verify the connection at the stand, match the assignment exactly and avoid testing a new aircraft, tracker, livery and online ATC setup on the same flight.
