How do you plan KLAX to KSAN in a flight simulator?

To plan KLAX to KSAN in Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D or FSX, treat it as a roughly 95 NM direct coastal sector. Use SLI and OCN as a practical IFR backbone, add procedures matching the active runways, and keep cruise altitude modest because descent follows soon after climb.

What KLAX to KSAN route should you enter?

Use the Seal Beach and Oceanside navigation aids as a planning spine, not as a guaranteed clearance. A useful starting structure is:

KLAX [SID or vectors] SLI OCN [STAR or transition] [approach] KSAN

SLI is the Seal Beach VOR and OCN is the Oceanside VOR. A current planner may replace either with RNAV fixes or connect them through an airway. Accept that route when every fix and procedure exists in both the simulator database and the aircraft's FMS; do not file the example verbatim if the planner or ATC rejects it.

The airport-to-airport distance is about 95 NM, while procedures and vectors can extend the flown route to roughly 110–140 NM. A direct GPS leg is adequate for an unrestricted practice flight, but it is rarely the best representation of an airline IFR clearance through Southern California airspace.

Which cruise altitude works for this short flight?

Most jet flights work best between roughly 12,000 feet and FL200, while turboprops usually need less altitude. Treat these as starting ranges rather than clearances; published restrictions, minimum IFR altitudes, weather and ATC take priority.

A common mistake is selecting a normal medium-haul cruise level such as FL300. The aircraft then reaches top of descent before levelling off, burns extra fuel in the climb and may be unable to meet arrival restrictions. Jets generally cover the sector in about 30–45 minutes airborne; turboprops take around 45–65 minutes, depending on routing and wind.

How do you build and load the IFR flight plan?

Build the route once, then make the planner, FMS and simulator ATC use the same version of it.

  1. Choose the aircraft first. Aircraft performance affects altitude, speed, fuel and which RNAV procedures can be flown.
  2. Check weather at both airports. Set likely departure and arrival runways, but be prepared to change them if live weather or ATC produces a different flow.

  4. Load the route into the simulator and FMS. Confirm that KLAX, KSAN and every en-route fix appear in the correct order. If built-in ATC is being used, activate or file the same plan there as well.
  5. Add runway-compatible procedures. Select the SID, STAR and approach only after checking their runway and transition. Avoid combining a planner-supplied procedure with a second copy selected manually.
  6. Inspect the legs page. Look for duplicate fixes, route discontinuities, impossible turns and sudden returns to KLAX. A vectors or manual-termination leg may be intentional, so do not close every discontinuity automatically.
  7. Check the vertical profile. Review altitude constraints and ensure descent begins early enough for the KSAN approach. Lower the cruise altitude if climb and descent overlap.

How should you choose the KSAN arrival and approach?

Choose the KSAN approach only after confirming the active end of its single Runway 09/27. For the frequently used Runway 27, select a published ILS, localiser or RNAV procedure supported by the aircraft and its installed navigation data.

An arrival from OCN approaches San Diego from the north, while Runway 27 requires a westbound final from the east. Expect a STAR or ATC vectors to carry the aircraft inland and position it on final; going directly from OCN to the airport can leave the aircraft north of the centreline, too high and facing a sharp intercept.

Brief the approach altitude constraints and published missed approach before descent. If ceilings are low, use an approach whose equipment and minima the aircraft can meet rather than relying on a visual arrival. Can you fly KLAX to KSAN as a VFR coastal route?

Yes, but the direct coastline is surrounded by busy controlled and military airspace. Useful visual checkpoints include Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Dana Point, Oceanside, La Jolla and Mission Bay before entering the KSAN traffic pattern or accepting ATC vectors.

For a south-easterly magnetic course above 3,000 feet AGL, 3,500 or 5,500 feet commonly fits the US VFR hemispherical rule. A Class B clearance, other ATC instruction, clouds or airspace limits may require something different. Check restricted areas and remain clear unless the simulator's ATC has authorised entry.

KLAX and KSAN are not suitable places to improvise uncontrolled arrivals. Request the appropriate clearance or flight following, plan coastal diversion airports and carry enough fuel for vectors or a return north. Why does the KLAX to KSAN flight plan fail in the FMS?

Most failures come from mismatched navigation data or incompatible procedures rather than the two-airport route itself.

  • Missing SID, STAR or fix: the planner and aircraft probably use different navigation-data cycles. Choose procedures present in the aircraft database or align the data sources.
  • Runway mismatch: a procedure may serve only certain runways. Reselect the departure or arrival after changing the active runway.
  • Duplicate waypoints: importing a complete route and then adding the same procedure manually often creates loops. Remove the duplicate procedure, not isolated fixes at random.
  • ATC ignores the route: the FMS plan and simulator flight plan are separate in some aircraft. Load or file the same route in both systems.
  • Aircraft cannot descend in time: reduce the cruise altitude, begin descent earlier or accept vectors that provide more track miles. Do not solve it with an unstable, steep approach.
