Can you hear KDEN on an airband radio?
Yes, if you are within radio range and use a receiver that supports civil aviation AM frequencies.
- Use the correct receiver. Choose a receive-only airband radio or scanner covering the civil VHF airband from 118.000 to 136.975 MHz. An ordinary FM broadcast radio cannot demodulate these transmissions properly.
- Programme specific KDEN frequencies. Scanning the entire airband is slow and may cause the receiver to miss the beginning of calls. Store only the positions you want to monitor.
- Improve line of sight. An outdoor or elevated antenna generally receives more than one inside a building. You may hear the powerful controller transmitter clearly while missing aircraft on the ground behind terminals or other obstructions.
- Remain receive-only. Never transmit on an ATC frequency without the required authority. Accidental transmissions can block safety-critical instructions.
Rules governing scanner use can vary by location and situation, particularly inside vehicles, so check the law that applies where you are listening.
Why is the KDEN feed silent or incomplete?
A silent or one-sided KDEN feed usually reflects receiver coverage, channel selection or normal ATC operations rather than a fault with your speakers.
- The receiver is offline: internet feeds depend on local receiving equipment, power and connectivity.
- The selected sector is inactive: controllers can combine positions during quieter periods, moving traffic to another published frequency.
- You hear only the controller: the receiver may be close to the ATC transmitter but unable to receive distant or ground-level aircraft.
- Calls begin halfway through: a combined feed scanning several channels can miss the opening words while switching frequencies.
- The traffic sounds delayed: internet buffering is normal, and the amount of delay can vary during a session.
Can live KDEN ATC match a flight simulator?
Live KDEN ATC can provide authentic background audio in a flight simulator, but it will not control or respond to your simulated aircraft.
For the closest match, place the simulator at Denver and use real-world time, weather, runway configuration and traffic. Even then, injected traffic may be filtered or delayed, so aircraft and call signs will not always correspond.
