Is ActiveSky FS better than MSFS Live Weather?
ActiveSky FS is the stronger PC choice when you want an external weather interface, weather briefings and more deliberate control over how conditions are supplied; Live Weather is better when you want a free, integrated system requiring no separate application.
Neither option replaces Microsoft Flight Simulator’s volumetric cloud renderer. A third-party weather engine supplies and controls weather data through the interfaces available in the simulator, so cloud shapes, visibility transitions and precipitation remain subject to the core engine’s limitations.
A preset pack serves a different purpose. It is usually the best option for practising the same crosswind landing, reproducing low visibility or setting up a thunderstorm for screenshots because the scenario does not depend on changing online data.
Do MSFS 2020 weather add-ons work in MSFS 2024?
Only use an MSFS 2020 weather add-on in MSFS 2024 when its developer or package documentation explicitly identifies MSFS 2024 support. A package appearing in the content library does not prove that its weather definitions, connector or external application work correctly.
External engines need version-aware software capable of communicating with the installed simulator. Preset packages are simpler and may transfer more easily, but changes to weather definitions and package structure can still cause missing presets or incorrect conditions. Platform support matters too. ActiveSky FS and REX Weather Force are Windows applications, so they cannot run on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. MSFS 2020 was never released for PlayStation; MSFS 2024 is available there, but console users must rely on built-in weather or content officially distributed for their platform.
How do I install a weather add-on without conflicts?
On PC, install the package according to its type and make sure only one source is driving the simulator’s weather.
- Confirm the exact simulator and platform. A listing that says only “Microsoft Flight Simulator” is not enough; look for explicit MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 support.
- Install preset packages at the correct level. For a manual Community-folder installation, the package root should contain files such as
manifest.jsonandlayout.json, rather than another identically named folder. - Use the supplied installer for external engines. Active weather engines may require a separate Windows application and simulator connector rather than a simple Community-folder copy.
- Select one weather source. Do not leave Live Weather active while another engine is attempting to inject conditions. If the add-on documentation calls for a particular preset or weather mode, use that mode.
- Retest after simulator updates. Update the weather engine and its connector first. If the problem remains, temporarily remove unrelated Community packages to identify a conflict.
The failure patterns are usually recognisable:
- Preset missing from the menu: check for a nested folder, the wrong Community folder or a package made for the other simulator.
- Weather never changes: confirm that the external application is connected and that the required in-sim weather mode is selected.
- Clouds or winds keep snapping back: disable Live Weather and any second injector competing with the chosen engine.
- PC download unavailable on console: console editions do not expose a Community folder for manually copied freeware.
