Why does Microsoft Flight Simulator VR show a black screen?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix a Microsoft Flight Simulator VR black screen by checking OpenXR, launch order, GPU drivers, add-ons and graphics settings.

A black screen in Microsoft Flight Simulator VR usually means the headset session or OpenXR runtime has failed, even though the simulator itself is still running. Start the headset’s PC software first, select the correct OpenXR runtime, reconnect the headset, then test MSFS with overlays and Community add-ons disabled and conservative graphics settings.

These OpenXR checks apply to PC versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. Xbox does not support VR. PSVR2 applies only to MSFS 2024 on PS5 through its free 2026 VR update; without that update installed, PC-style OpenXR changes cannot enable it.

What does the VR black-screen pattern tell you?

The behaviour of the desktop mirror usually reveals whether the fault is the headset connection, OpenXR compositor or simulator renderer.

If the headset never becomes available to the simulator, follow our headset-detection checks for OpenXR, driver and GPU-routing faults before changing MSFS graphics options.

How do I fix a black screen in MSFS VR?

Work through the VR chain in order; changing several runtimes and graphics options together often hides the actual fault.

  1. Restart the complete VR session. Exit Microsoft Flight Simulator, close the headset software and any SteamVR or OpenXR processes, disconnect the headset, then restart the PC. Reconnect the headset only after Windows has loaded fully.
  2. Test the headset outside MSFS. Confirm that its PC VR environment or test scene displays correctly and tracks your head. If that is also black, the problem is with the headset connection, runtime or driver rather than Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  3. Select one active OpenXR runtime. MSFS sends VR output to the runtime registered with Windows. Use the Meta runtime for a Quest connected through Meta Quest Link or Air Link, SteamVR when that is the chosen headset transport, or the runtime supplied for another connection method. Several runtimes may be installed, but only the one matching the active connection should be registered.
  4. Use a clean launch order. Start the headset software, establish the wired or wireless PC connection and wait until the headset is ready. Launch MSFS in 2D, enter a simple flight, then invoke the simulator’s Toggle VR command. The default PC binding is commonly Ctrl+Tab unless it has been reassigned. Our PC VR connection and launch-order checklist covers the complete setup.
  5. Remove OpenXR layers and add-ons. Temporarily disable OpenXR Toolkit, performance overlays, third-party frame-generation utilities and post-processing injectors. Start MSFS in Safe Mode when offered, or move Community content out temporarily, then test with a default aircraft and airport.
  6. Reduce the rendering load. Lower VR render scaling, terrain and object detail, clouds and texture resolution. Disable motion reprojection temporarily. In MSFS 2020, test DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12; do not expect that switch in a simulator build which does not expose it.
  7. Check the GPU and driver. Update or reinstall the graphics driver, then ensure both MSFS and the headset compositor use the dedicated GPU on a dual-GPU laptop. A DisplayPort headset must be connected to an output driven by the dedicated graphics card, not the motherboard.
  8. Rule out the connection. Try another suitable USB or DisplayPort socket, remove unpowered hubs and inspect detachable headset cables. For wireless VR, test a wired connection where the headset supports one; this separates network instability from an OpenXR rendering fault.
  9. Repair software last. Repair or reinstall the headset software before reinstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator. A complete simulator reinstall is rarely the first answer to a black headset display and may require a large content download without changing the faulty OpenXR registration.

A Windows Mixed Reality headset also requires a Windows installation that still includes WMR support. If the installed Windows release has removed that platform, changing an MSFS setting will not restore the headset runtime.

Does the Steam or Microsoft Store version affect OpenXR?

No. The storefront controls entitlement and updates, but the headset connection determines which OpenXR runtime Microsoft Flight Simulator should use.

A mistake we see constantly is selecting SteamVR solely because MSFS was bought through Steam. A Quest using Meta Quest Link normally needs the Meta runtime even when the simulator is the Steam edition; SteamVR is appropriate only when the chosen VR connection actually uses it.

Why are the VR menus visible but the cockpit is black?

Visible menus mean the headset and OpenXR session are functioning, so the fault has narrowed to the simulator’s 3D scene or rendering path.

  • Test in daylight with clear weather to rule out an unpowered, genuinely dark cockpit.
  • Use a default aircraft at a default airport; a failure limited to one aircraft or location points to that package.
  • Remove Community add-ons and disable non-essential in-sim content before repeating the flight.
  • Turn off OpenXR overlays and motion reprojection, then retest with lower VR settings.
  • If one eye remains black, concentrate on the GPU driver, cable and compositor rather than scenery.

What if the black screen still does not clear?

If other VR software also fails, continue with the headset runtime, cable, wireless connection and graphics driver. If only MSFS fails after a clean add-on test, restore its graphics options to conservative defaults and repair the simulator installation.

A black display can also be one symptom of a wider VR startup failure. Our broader MSFS VR failure checks cover missing VR mode, immediate exits, binding problems and sessions that never initialise.
